audience has a dream it might be a
secret dream might be a dream you
started but never achieved it might be a
dream that you’ve told many people about
or a dream you’ve never said out loud
dreams are powerful they transform us I
had this dream when I was 29 that I
would be an actor
so I created a one-woman show called
inside out and I performed it in
Portland Oregon I love the title I
thought I was great in it the show opens
I kill it you know I’m up all night
waiting for the Portland Tribune to come
out cuz I know I know in my bones it’s
going to be a rave review and it’s gonna
launch my solo domestic / international
career it’s 5:00 a.m. I’m on the street
corner I open the paper to the theater
section there it is

letters can’t sing can’t act can’t dance
can’t write don’t bother
how many of you have ever had your dream
come crashing down like this you get a
diagnosis you lose your job partner
walks out the door what do you do you
take that dream you hide it you shame it
you shelve it or you can do what I did
leave town
but late at night that dream continues
to haunt you you keep keep playing it in
your head you wish you could make it
happen well today I’m gonna show you
three simple keys you can use to
accelerate achieving your dream are you
feeling brave okay
good get your shovel because we’re gonna
have to dig out that dream you buried
now in your program four pages from the
back is this picture and I want you to
turn in your program to it and get a pen
they’ve been handing out some to you
grab a pen or a pen that you’ve been
using and then pay attention you have to
move fast if you stay ahead of your fear

you to write two to three words or draw
two to three pictures of your dream like

I’m starting my own business I’m buying
my own house draw a few or write a few
words got it okay let’s let’s grab a key
key number one draw your future draw
your future now in order to keep your
amygdala calm I’m going to tell you a
story now your amygdala as you know is
this part of your brain that gets all
freaked out when you start to make
change so stay calm and let me tell you
about Mike Mike was an assistant film
director on
many films but his secret dream was to
make a film of his own so one year
Mike’s in Bali and he’s working on a
commercial and he gets this idea for his
own short film because he falls in love
with Bali and he wants everyone to see
it now coincidentally someone sent Mike
a copy of my talk from 2011 TEDx draw
your future
so Mike watches it and then he draws a
picture of his dream him making that
film accepting the multiple awards it
will win the domestic / international
audiences watching it loving it and then
mike chooses three bold steps to
activate that dream write the script do
a Kickstarter for fundraising assemble a
crew Mike does all three and KaBlam
a year later Mike’s in Bali shooting his
movie now since I gave that talk in 2011
I’ve received over 340 to 517 but I’m
not counting emails comments tweets from
people all around the world who like
Mike watch that talk 90% of them said it
inspired them to draw their future of
those who did sixty six percent wrote me
of their success that picture made me
believe that career was possible Stella
Kenya I left that bad relationship took
my family and moved to a new country
behnazir Spain I stopped trying to live
my mom’s dream and started living my own
carlos brazil and 98% said my drawing
skills suck

the great news is it doesn’t matter if
you won draw your future first draw
where you are in the current state then
draw the ideal state then come up with
these three bold steps to get you there
seems simple enough right exactly 30
percent of the comments came from people
who were brave enough to write me of
their frustration I can’t seem to make
it happen you make it sound easy it’s
not that easy I’m scared

get stuck why do we get stuck we draw a

what if I can’t handle a bigger future
pride I like Who I am pretty much am I
gonna have to change a lot I think it
might be guilt
I don’t deserve something that good you
know who deserves that my sister Teresa
she is so nice
and this is exactly what happened to
Mike the filmmaker he’s halfway through
shooting his first cut and he sends me
this urgent email Patti help I’m in Bali
and I’m stuck I’m halfway through my
film and I’ve run out of money maybe I
should have kept my real job Patti can
you help me
are you a life coach no quickly I write
Mike back Mike listen 95% of the brain
is run by the subconscious which houses
belief you’ve formed before the age of
15 beliefs like I’m not brave enough
I’ll never have enough money I never
finish anything and those beliefs run
the show under here automatically
without you even knowing it so you can
have that dream and draw a picture after
picture of that dream but if you never
go down here and interrupt those beliefs
that dream won’t happen because what you
dream and what you believe is in
conflict key number two change your mind
now after I got that terrible theater
review I knew I had to recreate myself
and I’m me so it had to be dramatic I
was mortified it was humiliating so I
drove from Portland Oregon to Berkeley
California in one night and started my
new career the next morning weeding
people’s gardens for money so much
sexier than being a professional actor
and with all that weeding time I got to
listen to those limiting beliefs playing
over and over and over again in my head
why did I think I could be an actor

finally I got so tired of hearing myself
I thought wait a minute I wonder if I
could pull those beliefs out of my
brains like weeds out of the ground
and then I threw him in the compost
well now what now what I wonder if I
could plant my future with these beans
sounds familiar
I’m gonna help people change their lives
I’m gonna travel the world giving talks
I am gonna fall in love for life and
then I sat on the dirt I closed my eyes
I opened my heart and I raised this new
garden and handed it over to the
universe now right here is the dividing
line between what is and what could be
the truth is you are not your mind you
have a mind and you can change it you
can do it
so right now grab two of your beliefs
that have been holding you back from
your dream and write them down write
them down and get ready to compost them
and then grab three beans and plant them
for your future like I’m confident I’m
safe I’m loved plant them now key number
three turn down your ego and turn up
your creative genius creative genius who
him no creative genius
you creative genius isn’t a person it’s
an innate process that all of us are
born with to tap your creative genius
you simply need to take a little time
for yourself every day I’m talking ten
minutes sit down get quiet close your
eyes and then and this is hard
especially for North Americans start to
daydream daydreaming allows you access
to these ideas outside your conscious
mind in this alpha state the ground is
soft it’s easy to weed out the stuff you
don’t want and plant the stuff you do
look it’s starting to grow
look it’s leafing out look there’s you

running that nonprofit company changing
the world look there’s you looking into
the eyes of that long-awaited lover I

then get up every day and do something
to get that dream learn everything you
can about who you want to be where you

Cannes Film Festival since then made in
