I am an artistic innovator I love to use
pastel pencil and paint with lots of
color I like to use pastel the most
because I like to blend colors and push
different colors across boundaries where
you would never imagine they belong and
also make it very colorful
I love how when you do this you can make
something look really realistic or
totally fiction my favorite color is
purple it always has been and probably
always will be I used my love for
pushing color past conventional
boundaries when I made a pastel portrait
of my dog Nick’s face isn’t he cute it
all happened a year ago to put it
shortly my art teacher let us do
whatever we wanted for an art show and I
was very excited I want to do a pastel
portrait of my dog Nick’s face in some
crazy color so what’s better than my
favorite color purple so I wanted to use
pastel and I’d been talking to my mom
about it and she told me how she could
teach me how to blend colors and make it
look realistic too so after many weeks I
had finally finished and I absolutely
loved it I was even offered money for it
but anyway I named the piece King Nick
because purple means royalty and that is
how I expressed my favorite color and I
remember people telling me it looks
really cool but it’s obviously not real
and I said I don’t care
art isn’t always supposed to be real so
I’m here to tell you that the context
you’re in or the framework shouldn’t
dictate the colors that are expected to
be in that framework so this got me
thinking about the dress controversy on
the internet awhile ago the dress is a
viral internet sensation a picture
everyone was obsessing over during late
February 2015
viewers were debating whether the dress
was white and gold or blue and black now
I know you’re wondering what color I saw
I saw weighing gold but why did
different people see the dresses
different colors neuroscientist bevel
Conway and Jane needs discovered how our
brains identified enter this
depends on whether you think you saw the
dress taking with a shadow so your eyes
will tell you that the dress is lighter
than it actually is
or if you think you saw the dress taking
with secretary light then your eyes will
tell you that the dress is darker than
it actually is
so neuroscience even tells us that the
way our brain perceives a framework
dictates the color that we will see for
the framework so this got me thinking
about a TED talk I studied in English
this year by the spoken word artist and
professor dr. Jamila Scott dr. Liz
Scott’s TED talk was inspired by the
fact that she was in an academic setting
speaking about intelligent matters dr.
Liz Scott is a black woman a woman came
up to her surprise that she was so
well-spoken this woman did not see the
color black and a framework or higher
education and being articulate were
expected as you can imagine
dr. Lascaux stead talk was passionate
angry and also articulate keep when you
can imagine any color fitting in any
setting your world opens up you can
imagine a world populated by purple
poodles and more importantly you can
imagine sharing your rich history and
talents across a multitude of context
thank you [Applause]
