Communication with cartoon | Syed Rashad Imam Tanmoy | TEDxNorthSouthUniversity

[Applause]
hello everyone really excited to be here
today than our self University so when I
was first approached to give this
stepped out here I was really thinking
that what should I talk about I was
thinking that I should obviously talk
about something interesting and I should
talk about something special that means
something to me and I was also thinking
of that I should talk about something
that is relatable to all of you and me
but everyone here we are so different
from each other right a lot of you are
students but over time surely will grow
up to become someone maybe a doctor or
an engineer or a businessman and I’m
sure there’s a lot of people from
different professionals are here today
and I hope some of you you will become a
cartoonist like me why not but what is
not so different is I was thinking that
when all of us was children’s I’m sure
all of you and all of us when we were
children we are all kind of alike we all
used to sit and draw with our crayons
tell me I’m interested to know how many
of you used to draw when you guys were
kids see almost everybody
don’t feel bad who did not I’m sure it
did something else yeah so yeah all of
us used to draw and slowly you grow up
you give up you you do something else
you find yourself better as something
else and you become something else
instead for me I kept doing that because
I was not actually better at something
else I was with better at that simple
drawing and
coloring with curls so I kept doing that
I and I slowly I become a cartoonist and
when I was a kid what I actually used to
do is I used to sit at the back of my
classroom and I used to draw silly
doodles I used to make funny faces and
whatever I used to draw I remember I
that even in that very early age I think
it was class two or class where I
realized in that way I used to get a lot
of attention and obviously because I was
not very good at other stuff like sports
and public talking or whatever that my
other friends were good at so I realized
that this was my thing and also for that
my friend is also used to give me
attention for that too they used to
laugh at whatever I used to draw and why
you want the job why don’t the laughs
because of this this is what I used to
draw this is basically my 3rd grade math
teacher and most of the time he was
really angry
we were like 70 kids in one classroom
why wouldn’t he be so once I remember
when I like obviously this is not the
actual drawing but I tried to make her
whatever I recall of it so I remember
the day when I made this fun caricature
of my math teacher I do the funny
picture and all of my friends are
laughing and that paper was going around
the classroom and all of a sudden my
math teacher got hold of the paper of
the caricature and at that moment I knew
that I’m doomed and at that moment what
happened at the front desk
my teacher got so angry he got so angry
he threw his blackboard ass duster what
he had in his hand at me at the back
the bastard knocked me directly in my
forehead and it was like them and like
it was a massive disaster and I’m sure I
see a lot of surprise surprise phases
but I’m sure whom of you were a student
in school before at 2000 or 1999 that
beating up in classroom was still legal
in Bangladesh back then and now I look
back it was a bit more fun to like yeah
it it hard but it was interesting but
what I’m trying to say here that at that
very moment when I had a black eye or a
bump head when when that duster not me I
had a realization I had a realization
that visual communication does have
impact anyways so today that’s why I
thought that why not I will share some
of my stories with you and also between
that I’ll try to slowly to preach a
point to ado guys that why is not just
for me as a cartoonist to draw cartoon
is important why more than ever in 2017
in now is everyone should draw cartoons
so I started my carrier in Moon Mad
Magazine a monthly Sattar magazine from
Bangladesh and I’m sure a lot of you
have grown up with it by reading it and
this was my dream job and I’m very lucky
that I already get to start with my
dream job and this is this month’s issue
through the in show theories issue and I
have done this cover and I’m sure a lot
of you can relate
maybe Chara a lot of you whose lives in
Rampur ‘or mama pew mohammad poor I’m
sure you can relate with the situation
of the states our
clapping situation and so when I started
working at one mA back in 2006-2007 what
I was actually learning is I was I was
learning to draw cartoons but what I was
actually learning is – I was learning to
put messages via pictures that what I
was learning and experiments that how
you across opinion are message through a
funny picture or like that so back then
I remember as this is a monthly magazine
I had to wait for a month to see my
cartoons on print and moreover to see
the reaction of my audience of the
people of my cartoon so I had to wait
for a month to see to understand with my
cartoon work but not where nowadays you
don’t even have to wait for a day like
for example I work for this national
daily called Tucker Tribune and the
editorial cartoonist for them and when I
draw a cartoon for takatori Buena
political or editorial cartoon most of
the time they just upload it on their
website instantly I don’t even have to
wait a day to see it and I’m sure all of
you know you don’t have even have to be
go through a authorized publisher
nowadays to publish your opinion because
of in last 10 years because of social
media Facebook or Twitter and everything
you can just put up a status picture a
photographer drawing anything and you
get the public reaction instantly and it
has become so natural nowadays we don’t
even realize that how powerful this is a
lot of us realize we continue developing
a regular follower and in that way we
become our the publisher of ourselves
and from that point what I was trying to
say is even I see a lot of parents
bragging about their children like for
the two three-year-old children that Oh
Bobbie janin motto Ammar bacastow
janilla
hijae she act a tab or actor pad his
cooktop ariana key I’m Rico horribly but
I’m sorry to break this to you to those
parents that this is not your kid who
are the genius reset does the system and
the technology is a technology so genius
and so powerful that even can make a
two-year-old children use use of their
system and the same system that pushes
you that makes you use to to use visual
communication for example
like we all know how nowadays more and
more we need to connect visually like
not even a status is enough anymore even
Facebook is promoting you to put your
status through a visual representation
with a background and we do all sorts of
stuff we used as emojis and stickers
even there are memo generators because
we need to connect more this young
generation we learned that like typing
is fine writing is fine but there’s more
than that we have to communicate
visually like for example we were
watching the animated that animation
that mobile game heroes of 71 and
everything these things are growing as
the need for more and more visual
communication and here where cartoons
comes in so what is the cartoon to put
it very simply a cartoon is more like an
envelope an envelop where there is the
picture and there’s your opinion you
cross out your opinion or a message
through a picture so whom of you are
trying more and more to have your put
your voice out there for people to hear
what you are saying
cartoon am saying very strongly cartoon
can be a very interesting way to
present yourself I remember to Maude we
do a lot of workshops and a lot of
different kind of people comes and joins
us in those workshops so I remembered
there was a there was a guy who just
finished his his bachelor’s from some
university and as he had some time he
was doing this cartoon workshop with us
because he loved to draw he didn’t had
any specific agenda
he was just drawing but after the
workshop a few days after I do a few
months after all of a sudden he called
me and I was like who is this he is like
I am Sameer or someone and I didn’t
recall him and he said I was in your
workshop and I wanted to let you know
and I called you to let you know that I
was at this job interview at this
corporate office and all they wanted to
see is my cartoons and I’m like what I’m
like nah he said no I just put in my CV
as my extra curriculum activities that I
did this workshop from Monmouth and they
were really excited and they asked me to
represent what I’m trying to say through
my cartoons so I I draw something in the
whiteboard and I presented my
application through cartoons and in that
way immediately I got my job and that
really made me really surprised because
we when we were taking that workshops we
didn’t thought of that we mostly was
worried about why are we teaching so
many kids cartoons
not everybody is God have become a
cartoonist not everyone was gonna get a
job from learning cartoon but that
moment this area was clear in front of
my eyes that is not just if you learn
cartoons is not just you’ll get a job in
a newspaper or a fun magazine is
basically you are learning another
visual communication through what you
can do a lot more other things so from
that from last year we
this platform come called cartoon people
while all sorts of visual storytellers
cartoon makers animators we meet and we
network because we realize there’s a
huge vacuum in Bangladesh where young
people don’t know where to go if they
want to learn visual communication and
you’ll be very surprised to know that
through cartoon people every week every
Saturday we arrange this sketchbook
session in places around haka what we
all do is we just put up a status from
our Facebook page is like 4 p.m. this
Saturday new market bring your
sketchbook and pen and every Saturday at
least 15 to 20 new young people comes
with their sketchbook Pan Am sketchbook
to join with us so another thing I
wanted to talk to you about is another
part of cartooning which is caricature
as I was telling like even the whole
point of cartoon the idea came to my
mind as I was a kid I showed you is from
the caricature of my teacher and we also
from Curtin people nowadays do events we
go to Comic Cons I’m sure I had us once
that we go to events and we communicated
and draw people obviously I cannot draw
them as I want to or as I draw the
politicians in my newspaper like for
actual caricature should be because I’m
obviously I’m taking money from them so
I try to make them as pretty as possible
but even a lot of people gets happy and
a lot of people obviously don’t get
happy at that much
and but let me tell you so here even if
I cannot true to be true to my art there
is a place where I can actually be true
to my art and that’s where that’s my in
my political cartoons so as a political
cartoonist I try to put my opinion
through those drawings in every occasion
I try not to miss any serious issues
over the year for example you can see
the Rana Plaza incident back from 2003
and you can see how I want to show it as
a GDP like he’s sad but it’s true like
sacrifice of all these people still
taking our GDP up so from Rana Plaza to
umpah remember a situation where this
old guy was beaten up for protesting and
I wanted to laugh at it too like a lot
of people were angry where where I made
fun of it but I wanted to laugh at it to
show like how we in this situation are
so he’s saying as capita by corinthos
younger one
so by laughing at this serious issues
what I try to do I try to put focus shed
light on this situation
so from ramp Rana Plaza to Rampal to
listen true Inga crisis every day that’s
how I try of course I have done that
this is like a saturated topic I like to
focus more and more in my like local
situations so from Rana Plaza to Rampal
to recent Rohingya crisis every day I
try to put messages through my cartoons
and one another incident that I really
want to share with you guys is that I
remember once I do a particular cartoon
making a joke on a particular political
party and obviously when you draw a
cartoon not
everyone is happy if everyone is happy
then you realize that you didn’t do a
good job your job is to criticize
someone so when I do that cartoon on the
public political priority thousands of
people from that political party was
really angry at me and was commenting on
my Facebook where after it was printed
in the newspaper I also shared it in my
social media so everyone was commenting
there at that house they didn’t like it
so from all those comments
I liked I actually keep a screenshot of
a very special comment that still makes
me remind me a lot of self so this guy
commented on that particular cartoon he
said I’ll kiss him to Palin knock helico
charity came October on meaning that
even as we were not good at anything
else you just always go and pinching
people and when he commented that I rely
the immediate reaction was anger from my
side then I really laughed because I
realized something I realized that this
is like telling a policeman that as he
was not good at anything else you are
always arresting people or telling a
charge like oh man as you are not good
at anything else you are just sitting
there and always judging people here so
it is like pointing a cartoonist and
complaining about the job he does so
from this point I actually want to
finish my speech by sharing two
sentences that I like together to try to
make point one is humor is contagious
like some of you whom of you who laughed
while I was cracking a joke – they might
not have laughed if you all of you are
not together here today maybe for
sitting at home you would have been like
but jessica’s sample laughs there and
here it made me you laugh more so as
humans contagious and there’s another
Chinese proverb I guess that’s a Chinese
proverb or sometimes people as when they
don’t know where is from they just say
it a Chinese proverb that is a picture
is worth a thousand word so I want all
of you guys to think about these two
sentences as I put these two sentences
again in an envelope a thousand word
worth picture and a humor or the opinion
in a envelop and makes a cartoon I want
you guys to think the next time when you
try to communicate when you want to
raise your voice against something or
want to put up a statement to remember
that cartoon can be very effective while
it comes to visual communication thank
you
