Come la musica realizza i nostri sogni | Vittorio Cosma | TEDxVarese

Translator: Robert Clarke Auditor: Michele Gianella
What makes us a musician to a TED?
Usually should sound, I will play a little.
First thing,
betray what the title
I gave to this meeting, in this speech,
because it seemed a bit ‘too “sectoral”
talk only about music.
He was interested,
as the title of this meeting, in general, is “going to believe it”
I was interested in talking about what I understand in life,
some values that I realized through music.
I do a successful job
because I get to work with emotion, with a very deep part of me
and so I would like to convey
a number of things that may be important,
both for creative work, for those lucky enough to do it
that, in general, perhaps even for life itself.
The music is usually seen
as a very emotional discipline, irrational, inspirational.
One is at the window,
watching the sunset, with birds that migrate.
There, that is 1% and is very fast.
One must be able,
and then in time I realized, I coded this way of working,
in the 1% to pay a 99% perspiration,
ie work, awareness, search for solutions.
This is a beautiful metaphor for life in general:
if one has a dream to chase, a worldview,
it is important to understand what are the concrete steps that one can do
to realize that dream, to have that vision into reality.
But especially at a time
where it is, say, very focused on individualism,
it is important, instead of looking down, towards you,
look to the horizon, which is more interesting, definitely.
The music, say,
It has a number of transposable values in everyday life.
The first is the versatility.
It is also almost a truism to say that music is a universal language.
I’ve experienced on my skin, just,
working with musicians from different countries, different continents.
I worked with English musicians, Icelandic, American,
Algerians who only spoke the Algerian.
And I spent two wonderful days talking to them, even.
This is another kind of cross-disciplinary.
In addition to the geographical,
it is interesting to the versatility, too,
the class, the possibility that one had in life.
I have had the opportunity to study, so I have a certain type of language.
But there are people who may not have been so lucky.
But when we begin to play together, you make music together,
these differences disappear completely
and applies all the same way, it communicates in the same way.
It seems trivial,
but when one lives them on their skin, he understands the power of these things.
Another aspect,
in addition to this transversal nature in general, which is also generational,
that is, with the elderly and young people who can talk quietly,
It is the fact that music is a kind of Trojan horse emotional, very powerful.
If I had to describe a feeling – nostalgia, I mean to say,
I should write many pages with also quite “high language”
so now I would reduce the ability to communicate this thing.
While on the other hand through music, without any reason,
bypasses the rational part.
If I do, if I play this very simple thing.
(Music)
already suffered one gets in a mood
which suggests something of the past, it is lacking, but even without rationalizing it.
This is nostalgia for the music.
It takes 10 seconds to explain it,
whereas it would take a very specific treaty
and it would not reach so deeply, [with the words].
This thing has brought me to think that another very important value
It is to be brought into question.
In any project that has done, in general, music,
I saw that it is important
not fossilize an acquired model,
in music but also in life.
We all have adhered to a model is simpler, it is reassuring.
Who was freak, who was dark, paninari.
This betrays a bit ‘my age.
Paninari Perhaps not everyone knows about them.
However, in short, are models to which it is also necessary,
– I think in adolescence, when young –
adhere to a model
me tell you a little ‘what you must do, in order to exist, to live.
Slowly, one should be free of this cage,
reassuring on the one hand but also imprisons you.
So, “questioning” means every time
try something different,
stand on the edge, not on the popular street.
And here it comes to the rescue, again by synthesis,
a dear friend, Posies
who wrote a song, years ago very beautiful
which is called “Do not ever grow up.”
I mention the with my voice …
(MUSIC)
“Do not ever become great, you are good for nothing you know.
It continues to grow as you can, but never stop.
Because, you see, being right is not a static dogma, a religion.
But follow the dynamics of history and always questioning … “
You see how short, in ten seconds,
He explained one thing that I, already badly, it took me more time
and probably I am not so deeply as he arrived.
Incidentally, a small aside:
We can also talk about other things than of teenage love,
in songs.
This was in the 70s in the standings.
Here, these values.
Through this path,
I was able to encode these values,
which they are, in fact, cross – and we talked about it before –
and I’ve done several projects of this type,
in which intersected musicians varissima extraction.
This is the night of Taranta
Stewart Copeland, one of The Police;
with bassist Area;
Rais of Almamegretta;
a quartet of percussionists who work with Philip Glass;
and a number of roots musicians, as you can see, very popular
playing the tambourine and playing traditional music of Salento.
Here, in this Babel of languages, it managed to find a North,
to carry out a project
in which all conversed and all worth the same way.
So transversal geographically.
Now let’s see …
The following is The Great Rock Orchestra
which it is another project I did for May Day in Rome
when I joined, of course, also for cross-disciplinary,
many musicians from different backgrounds:
classical, jazz, all the most representative of Italy.
There was Boost Subsonica; James Senese;
Stefano Di Battista, a great jazz musician;
Vasco Rossi guitarist and guitarist of Ligabue.
And all this has happened with peace of mind,
precisely because there is this democracy inherent in the music.
Another value,
perhaps even more important, in fact, that I mentioned,
It is inclusiveness.
Inclusiveness as exact opposite of exclusivity.
That is, there is usually an etymology of words
which has negative values in itself.
‘Exclusive’ is seen as a good thing, a cool thing,
just a few.
It’s actually a negative value,
a bit ‘as’ private’, whose root is’ deprived ‘.
Instead, one of the goals I have achieved musically,
but then I realized that it is a good thing also in life in general,
It is just to communicate things to people as possible,
avoiding the cryptic or elite languages,
that they reassure you, make you feel ‘special’,
but that really show the marked weakness.
The thing to do, instead,
It is trying to communicate to all of the important things.
And it is a lie that the public wants this
and the public must be given the simple things.
It’s not true!
I’ve got the proof in my personal experience,
ie with Deproducers, always get in trouble,
I’ve put together, as a producer, three producers and a scientist.
For a manufacturer,
which he is used to enter the recording studio
and say, “Do you like that!”, [because] they’re the absolute leader,
it’s a nice workout for dialogue
get together with three other developed enough ego like mine,
It makes you realize what your boundaries,
It makes you realize what the less important things,
that you can give up,
and does leave you, creatively,
just the idea, the strongest thing, more important,
to put it together with others that will also be important.
So, do you also understand what are the boundaries
and it ends where your freedom begins and that of others.
But returning inclusiveness, the textual part,
the idea was to make science part of the text,
not to speak of love again, for the umpteenth time,
but to talk about something substantial, philosophical, even daily.
So my aim, our goal,
It was to their cause
people to see a good concert, I hope.
In short, we are big enough to be pretty sure.
One comes out, gets excited,
but then he also understood what the Big Bang,
What is photosynthesis.
And finally, let’s say …
I am talking about something that has nothing to do, apparently,
which is the Arecibo message.
Arecibo radio telescope in South America
from which it was sent, 35 years ago, a message to the edge of space.
This message, in fact, it is then just a kind of cry
We are here, we are here to look for extraterrestrial life!
And 35-year-old man has sent this message
which it is a mixture of binary language, scientific terms
but also very naive parts
as the little drawing of a man, the little drawing of DNA.
Why am I talking to Arecibo?
Because, in my opinion, be able to communicate the culture,
– I’m lucky to make it through the music –
but, in general, be able to communicate
to the people we care, our children,
is a bit ‘the legacy that we give to future generations.
And the most important thing we leave to future generations, in my opinion,
is that this very new way to collaborate
it means that there is a different way of organizing human beings,
namely that this system is not the only possible system.
Thank you.
