Choices that can Change your Life | Caroline Myss | TEDxFindhornSalon

Translated by: Peter van de Ven Looked by: Rik Delaet
As someone who has been dealing with healing for many, many years –
well, a few years –
(Laughter)
I am an observer.
People who are engaged in healing
are observers
of the mysterious patterns that cause us –
Why do we get sick? Why do we deposit?
What makes us better?
I mean, we are big mysteries to each other
and I find it so interesting
that, despite all the years that we study ourselves,
we are such mysteries.
That should make us immediately clear
that we constantly continue to develop new facets of ourselves,
that we ourselves, in our role as observers,
also continue to learn how to observe
and that we as a human being
also always finding new facets to observe.
Let’s say that in the world behind your eyes
still the most discoverable.
And that we have become so fascinated by ourselves
in a way that was not the case in the past,
that we push our boundaries inwards; we are the new frontier ourselves.
So if, for example, we observe
why we get sick, why we do not get better,
then that has a different meaning than if that question were asked
before the Second World War.
The nuance with which we view ourselves nowadays
and the nuance with which we ask that question,
is a hologram compared to how we asked that question
and maybe were looking for an infection.
We are looking for a story,
to a complex of reasons.
I have been working with people for 35 years now
and as an observer of people
are there so many things that I could share with you,
but I have limited myself, there was not much else,
to choice.
I want to emphasize the power to choose.
Maybe we would not even touch that in the past,
but today we have to talk about that.
Because choice is a fundamental force of human experience.
We must see choice as an authority,
as a power that is so great
that if I was the boss in the world –
and then of course you say: “Yes, good idea!” –
(Laughter)
if I were in charge,
I would ensure that the power of choice was studied at every school.
That everyone had to learn that the power of the choices you make
have infinite consequences.
From the smallest choices to the largest
and it is paradoxical
that you have no idea what a small choice is
and what a big one.
What we usually think,
is that the big choices are quite obvious:
buying a house, getting married,
divorce.
In fact, these are small choices.
The choices that really matter when it comes to your health,
when it comes to healing,
when it comes to finding your place,
find your strength,
are the small choices that …
are the choices, I better say, that you consider insignificant,
that you make in the privacy of your own company,
which you may see as the most unimportant,
as I have seen over and over again,
again and again,
are the most powerful choices in your life,
the most powerful,
that have the most powerful impact on your physical condition,
on your soul,
on your sense of who you are,
on your well-being,
on your whole being.
Well, I can tell you
that these kinds of statements are a little link,
because if someone says now:
“Prove that once”,
I would not be able to do that.
But listen to me with an open heart and an open mind
and see if it feels right.
I will go through some choices with you,
the kind of choice, if you came to tell me:
“I’m not feeling well.
I’m not feeling well.
I have chronic chronicity.
(Laughter)
And I stumble from one chronicity to another.
I have chronic chronicities.
I am an eternal mop.
I am not happy at all.
I complain constantly, I am in pain and I am tired.
And then I am almost equipped, but not again.
And I am almost happy, but not really.
And I can almost love someone, but not quite.
And then I almost feel love,
but actually I do not really feel it.
I think I feel it, so I think-feel.
I think-feel.
And now and then I get kind of in love,
but it is not permanent.
I take two aspirins and it is over.
(Laughter)
Then I think: now then? But that does not appear.
But then, almost, but not entirely.
(Laughter)
So I ask a therapist: “Is this love?”
If I try very hard, maybe, so it must be someone’s fault. “
Chronicity.
There have never been people with these kinds of problems.
Our problems are extraordinary.
Now that I am talking about this: we are also unique at this point.
And let this sink too.
We know some things since our birth,
it is in our structure.
It’s instinct,
it is spiritual instinct, it is in the DNA of our soul.
We already know from origin that choices are powerful.
Choice is our most powerful weapon
and we know that.
And that is why we are so afraid to make choices.
I ask, “Where do you want to eat?”
“No idea.”
“Choose a restaurant.” “No.”
Can not even choose a restaurant.
People are terrified to choose.
Afraid of the consequences.
“You choose.”
Terrified to be responsible for the consequences.
“I do not know what I want to do, I’ll think about it.”
The morning, the day …
Your mind gets the day shift; your heart gets the night shift.
Your mind says, “I think.” Your heart says, “I feel.”
And you do not let those two talk to each other.
Because if you do, you may really have to do something.
People are afraid of choices.
Most people do everything to postpone choices.
So I will help a little.
We look at a list of choices
that matter,
that matter, which are important.
The first choice is the decision to truly live an honest life.
And when I say to choose that, I mean the following.
I do not mean, “Oh, yes, I’m going to do my best.”
No no no no no.
I am talking about the word really and completely.
I’m really going to do it.
I am going to live an honest life.
Not even ‘the deed at the word’, I’m just going to live my truth.
I am going to live an honest life.
I am going to make my choices according to the truth that I proclaim.
I am going to live.
And that means that I will not deny myself.
I will not put water in the wine.
I do not tempt myself, do not put myself in awkward situations,
and if I find myself in it, I’ll make me get away.
Or I will not force anyone,
I will not force anyone into a situation
where I know they do not feel comfortable,
to please me.
I will not fix another,
because that is not honest.
I will not do that.
Let me tell you something.
Liars do not heal.
Liars do not heal.
How much wheat grass you eat
and whatever you are allowed to do with seeds and vegetables,
(Laughter)
an honest person who eats cat food will do better than you do.
(Laughter)
Unfair people, people who lie,
people in a moral crisis who just do not get it,
people who blame others for what they do and know,
people who make choices
and know that others will pay for the consequences
and be aware of it,
who know very well that what they say is not true
and know that others will be touched by it,
people who deliberately say things to hurt someone else,
just believe me: your body knows what you’ve done.
Your mind knows you did that.
Your heart and soul know that you did that.
So do not tell yourself under any circumstances
that the problem with your depression comes from your childhood.
Do not do it; hood with it; and take that decision.
The decision to live with integrity means taking responsibility yourself.
So it is not as simple as saying, “I am a good person.”
Stop it.
This is the serious work.
Second.
Do you write anyway?
(Laughter)
Take this decision:
I do not pass on my suffering but my wisdom.
I decide not to pass on my suffering
but my wisdom.
When it comes to your life until now, you can choose:
the gift that I can pass is either the wisdom that I have amassed,
or my suffering at the moment.
“Oh, how bad I am.
Oh, blabla, blabla, blabla. “
Or harvest your wisdom.
What do you want to pass on?
Your mud or your light?
Say it.
Everyone has that choice and everyone can pass …
but again: the choice is yours.
We all have the choice.
And believe me, I’m not saying that we do not suffer or have any pain.
But if we look at life,
are there things that are all spiritual, all major religious traditions,
all the great spiritual, sacred traditions have in common.
One of the lessons of these traditions, one of the great revelations
is that life will never be that wonderful, full thing we want,
what we often call ‘fair’.
It will never be.
It never becomes: “This happened, therefore.”
Someone once told me:
“If only I knew why this happened to me.”
And I said, “What would that solve?”
What if God sent an angel and the angel said, “What do you want?
I mean, you’re making a fuss about this.
What do you want?”
“I want to know why this happened and that happened and that happened.”
And that the angel would say, “That’s why.”
And then?
This is the point:
there is sorrow and pain that people have suffered,
so terrible, you do not want to know that.
And there’s nothing that’s going to make that disappear,
nothing that can do anything about it.
And the model for healing that we should have,
is a model that does not say that we have to forget those things.
It is not about forgetting.
It’s about looking at what happened to us
and say, “This will never get me under it.
It does not get me down, but I do not want to live in it.
In one way or another
do I have to transform this into wisdom,
but I will not sit down.
By no means.’
And that will be this choice.
I have to choose wisdom or suffering.
I can not make it disappear and if so,
the choice becomes: wisdom or suffering.
Thirdly:
the choice to take risks.
Take risks in your life.
Do not wait for evidence,
take risks.
And what does that have to do with your health?
Well, go on and on.
What happens when people get sick
and they feel their life force flow away?
They always regret it.
At a certain moment you will regret it.
You always get: “Oh, if only I had done this,
if only I had done that, I would have … “
You always slide towards it when you feel weaker,
even when you quickly recover.
And at that stage you start thinking about the life that you would have wanted to live.
Even if you only have a cold.
And one of the things that you regret,
when we become weaker and tired faster,
is that we start thinking about how our life would have gone
if we had taken risks,
if we had not simply made all the decisions in our lives
from our fear of humiliation.
“What if I am humiliated by this?”
“What if I can not handle the consequences?”
“What if I’m too scared?”
“What if I am alone?”
“What if it turns out to be too expensive?”
So what?
But then go home and ask yourself:
how many of my biggest fears have actually come true?
How much have really come true?
How many of my biggest fears have really come true?
And then calculate, write them down,
how many of the most beautiful things that have happened to me,
did I actually cause myself?
And probably … two.
I give you the benefit of the doubt.
Because if you really start looking and you count them up,
then you had in most of the beautiful things that happened to you
no active role at all.
And if you think: how did this happen?
Probably because of a lot of things you do not know about
who were actually very risky and you did not even know that.
Do not choose the safe way.
Do not tell yourself that …
When you make decisions about what to do,
do not look for advice,
because there is nothing behind it.
The reason you are where you are is that that part of your life is over.
Do not look at the past to shape the future.
Do not step into it.
When it’s time to decide “I do not know what to do,”
do not go back to who you were and what you did,
because it’s going to pull you back,
maybe even to places that no longer exist,
to images of yourself that are no longer there.
You are not that person.
And one of the things that weakens you,
is that you are going to yearn for things that no longer suit you,
that do not fit into the future picture.
What gives life force,
what feeds the desire to live your life full of conviction in the present,
is to say something like: “It’s time for something new.”
Be in the new, do not be afraid of it.
Be in that new one.
Be there.
Next one:
choose new words.
I love this.
Delicious.
When I was growing up … I am a wordsmith.
I am a writer, I am a wordsmith,
but I am really crazy about words.
I always read my dictionary in bed.
Because every word is a universe in itself,
every word, and in my workshops
I sometimes say to people: “What I want you to do,
is that you will come back tomorrow with three words you give me –
no, one is enough –
that you will never use again.
One but, I only want one word
and you can never use that again.
Never.
And I get everything that goes with that word.
Everything.
I do not care if it’s a word of two letters or three or four,
I just want one word. “
So. Imagine you say, “Well, I give you the word” beetle. “
“I give you the word ‘blue’”, and you would never see ‘blue’ again.
You really need to be when you’re home later,
in the coming days, now that you’ve heard me like that,
think about if you really should ban a word out of your head,
which would mean that you have the whole world attached to that word
out of your mind,
what word would you give, which word?
Zebra?
Never see a zebra again,
would you really want to miss that?
And everything that had to do with it.
Good,
if someone then says that your thoughts and words are not powerful,
then do that exercise and approach it that way,
and then construct the words you say to someone else,
word by word,
and see how powerful each single word is,
not only what you say to someone else, but also what you say to yourself.
What words do you say to yourself?
Words that you should never say to yourself.
Words that you should never use.
Words that you say: “What does that word do in my head?”
When we finally do quantum energy health care,
micro energy health care,
we will finally be able to do energy analysis
at a level where the strength of our vocabulary also weighs.
Then we will be able to say to people: your vocabulary is so toxic,
that the vibration of your neurology, houses thoughts,
frequencies
that are so toxic, that even if you do a visualization,
that is canceled out by a word use
that organic is so negative,
it does not matter what your visualization is,
your word use is mainly hostile,
it is hostile.
I would type your word usage
as mainly hostile to everything you see,
towards everyone and towards yourself.
You get up in the morning and you are hostile.
Your first thoughts are angry.
You see life as not enough.
You see others as not enough.
Your first reaction to everything is critical.
Your first reaction is: “This is not good enough.”
“They are not good enough.”
And which two words do you consider your strongest weapons?
Debt and justice.
“It’s their fault.”
“I am entitled to this.”
You think you deserve something.
Three words that are deadly: debt, right and deserve.
If you could ban those three words out of your head,
you have no idea how much better you would feel.
If you would never use those three words again,
I can tell you that your depressions would be much milder,
because you have no right to anything.
Giving the blame for something external will take you away from your present
and gives you all kinds of toxic ideas.
You just have to think about it
who blames you for something.
Imagine how many people accuse you of something
and how it feels to think about it.
Because when you accuse others, others accuse you.
Someone is in therapy because they know you.
(Laughter)
Stop therefore to see the world through those eyes.
Finally, make this choice.
Choose to stand up every day and bless your day.
Choose to stand up every day and bless your day.
And say, “I have no idea what the day will bring, but he is blessed.”
Why? Because I live.
And do not base your gratitude for your life on what you have,
or what you feel,
just because you exist.
Just because you exist!
Just because you exist.
And keep this prayer in your heart:
this day in my life never comes again.
I will never see the people I am looking at.
I will never see this sunrise again, nor will that sunset.
The person with whom I have breakfast I will never see again,
not exactly like that.
No, nothing in my life ever comes again.
That choice, that choice alone
should take away every bitter tone from your heart.
Let that live around you with such grace and grace,
that you only want to see the present,
in great gratitude and love.
Thank you.
