Challenging the Status quo and Winning. | Kofi Adu Domfeh | TEDxAdum

ah good afternoon my name is scuffie I

didn’t pray I’m currently in charge of

the northern sector to betray news but

it called the bureau chief about until

January 2016 I worked with a lover firm

as an assistant news editor well I’m

here to share with you why we need to

challenge the stock to school and bowels

of course you’ll still be winning and

just to share with you someone once

asked me okay so now you’re moving on

the next step is to go to the BBC and I

just said I don’t to leave us Elias is

yes unfortunately that’s not such a

great journalist of our times

[Music]

one thing that I want to share with you

how to do with what I experienced while

I was at love affair I think in 15 years

that I work with them I only had about

five minutes of respect for arias

available to me and I was to do business

news and I asked myself what – five

minutes due to my community so spiteful

idea I had

enter the environments with the mindset

of mean human rights reporting what I

was my background that’s my interest my

passion but I find myself in a situation

where I needed to impact on the business

community then we’re picking things

probably very firm and the challenge was

how do we reach out to people like you

well very brilliant ideas but I don’t

know how to sell those ideas how to get

a platform to sell those ideas and I

offer that opportunity it was

challenging and this is the course of

words I want to share with you this

this is one of the best views in Ghana

and some 20 years ago I left this school

of course is the basics I left like most

other students here in Ghana with the

mindset of acquiring some knowledge but

I don’t know where I left with the

knowledge but the motor of this who is

something that has always been with me

knowledge is power and that’s what is

really taking me to whichever level but

I find myself currently

something with you similar to the

thoughts by Kamala in Nigeria by this

time around he has to do with Ghanians

moving to Nigeria this is one of the

biggest slums in Africa is for Makapuu

and I tell you this is where I lived

when I go to Nigeria after my second

education my father was there and I

needed to join him there and this is

where people from Ghana that we thought

we’re looking for greener pastures

whenever I ask myself it is the

environment that I want to live in five

years later I returned to Ghana and I

this is somewhere in before the police

that assault rates in Kenya he said

there this the home of them aside

Tipu of the Masai and our vehicle just

trilling this one and I took that short

and I missed 13 people there these are

some of the Masai people that I met and

the greatest thing I learnt about them

is the fact that they are very

accommodating and anybody they meets

they want to impact

I met this lady there Samantha there was

a drought situation that’s what took me

actually I was there doing a report on

climate change and all that and I met

Samantha she had traveled all the way

from the UK to study the drought

situation with the intention of

impacting on such such a community and

that was the beginning of my thoughts I

asked myself what do I was would be

between part of my society and how do I

do it we’ve all been used to the fact of

the thing that we need to think globally

but locally but I said no this is an

environment that we find ourselves and

there are so many other opportunities

that we have that we don’t need to

necessarily have locally so I ask myself

that what do I do as a journalist to

globally so the village where you live

is probably the only space in the global

sphere and when I pick my pain my

microphone or my my recorder

I want to engage the average person

anywhere in the world

and that is what journalism is about Wow

as I speak to anybody in Ghana the

question is how does it impact on the

global community

and I am sharing this life for a purpose

I think all of us are used to social

media and when I started thinking about

how do I act globally

of course I’m today about love affair

and after you have our TV three

but I’m only living in massive and they

see even today as I arrived here

somebody asked me I would have moved my

say that means I use the income I see

I said yes I have nowhere to go in fact

my office is in Derby and we are here at

TEDx every this is linked in I’m

hitching fifty thousand flow is lateness

couple of it is something I did within a

week I’m supposed to hit fifty thousand

full of ways within this week and I’m

sure affair purpose on Facebook I can

only go up to five thousand if I’m using

mine on my Facebook page currently

unlike me writing as I used to but

anything I share on Facebook on LinkedIn

it’s read by millions outside of Ghana

these are the people who follow now

imagine the leverage I’m writing here in

Ghana in Kumasi in a deal about things

affecting my community my business

people people who are doing amazing

things some of which you said today and

these are the people I’m reaching out

if I can be able to do this this has to

do professionalism I think I can only be

content when I’m a competent to compete

to make an impact and that is what I

strive to do if I’m engaging anybody

whether I be the kid rather being a food

food seller anybody at all that I want

to speak to in my professional work I

need to be professional and

professionalism Goosen competence

I think I’ll something that we always

take for granted what do I do

so that if I’m going to win I will stand

and to be successful I think the

environment we live in has to do with

creativity what do I do to stand out

from the rest

I choose to be successful that is me

because of the fact that nobody else can

do what I think that is my belief you

may be whoever in the whole world but I

believe that what I do I’m special and

I’m unique in my own way and that is

what I strive to do I did this in Lima

Peru and I’m sorry for your papers when

I step out of Ghana my journalism is

something that I can do or compete with

any other word winner from BBC from the

scene in from anywhere in the world and

that is where we talk about success I

think the challenge we have is that when

we talk about successes maybe about a

car you drive the house how good you

dress I mean how good you smell but I

believe it has to do with an inner

conviction that’s yes I do this I’m

satisfied and for me my success is when

I put a smile on somebody’s face through

the work I do and I believe if we are to

be successful by challenging the status

quo the tenets of professionalism of

competence are some of the things that

we need to imbibe and there is no

holding back the fact that success is an

inner satisfaction and I believe be it

in Kumasi Chameli anywhere you find

yourself as an individual you can’t

choose to be successful and be the best that you can be thank you very much
