ladies and gentlemen I’m sure you’ve all
seen the movie where two guests at a
party put their keys into a bowl and
then everybody at the party gets to pick
out a set of keys I know every keys you
get is the person you get to spend some
time with of course the one thing you
hope for when you pull out a set of keys
is that they belong to someone beautiful
gorgeous and attractive the last thing
you want is to pull out a set of keys
and find out you’re stuck with someone
who doesn’t fit that bill at the age of
seven I put my hand into the bowl of
life and I pulled out and got still quit
dyslexia now let me ask you a question
when I mention dyslexia how many of you
saw it as a negative it’s okay if you
did
because I did too I remember being told
curled up in a ball in my kitchen in
floods of tears tinkin there was
something wrong with me think and I had
a disease thinking I was gonna need
medication to cure it when I was
diagnosed with dyslexia I thought it was
the end of my world dyslexia is defined
as a condition that hampers one’s
ability to read write and spell I could
only see it as a negative I saw it as
something that prevented me from doing
things in school I was told this Lexia
would stop me from learning languages
such as Irish and German I had to have a
tutor and while Lorna was brilliant part
of me believed having dyslexia meant I
couldn’t do anything without somebody
else’s help but today I believe the idea
were sharing is that there are times
when we need the challenge our own
thinking I was 16 when I first
challenged my thinking around this Lexia
that was when I found out Richard
Branson had it what was the most
successful entrepreneurs of all time and
a taught that occurred to me was it
doesn’t seem to be holding him back
and then I found out there were other
people with dyslexia who weren’t letting
it hold em back the writer I get to
Christie she had it WB Yeats the man who
gave us I will arise and go now and go
to Innisfree had it Albert Einstein had
this Lexia which of course makes you
wonder was he really giving us a steer
in relativity or justice theory and
relatives so at the age of 16 I decided
it wasn’t gonna hold me back one of the
things I always wanted to do was to run
my own business so at the age of 18 I
was involved in setting up a clothing
line called dirt bird clothing anybody
ever heard of it well in the spirit of
challenging my thinking I’m not going to
tell you that the business failed I’m
gonna tell you it gave me a wonderful
learning experience at the age of 21 I
set up another business this time
selling yoga equipment and again it gave
me a wonderful learning experience and
then I found fitness for the last five
years I’ve run a successful corporate
wellness company which has gone on to
work with some amazing clients and I
tribute its success to the lessons I
learned in my previous businesses and
the lessons I learned on challenging my
thinking around the celexa there are
times when it’s difficult to see what we
really have and who we really are but
what the slacks you did for me it gave
me the chance to exercise muscles today
in my business and in my life deciding
that the slacks here wasn’t gonna hold
me back has meant today when somebody
says no I find a way around there no
sometimes that means convincing them to
change their mind sometimes that means
convincing the next person who will say
yes theatre gift the dyslexia gift for
me is the gift of taking action making
things happen going out and getting it
not settling for anything less
people with dyslexia are great they
don’t have the time or inclination to
think about taking action to paraphrase
Mike we just do it one of the other
things dyslexia has given me it has
forced me to view the world differently
we rotor see risk I see rewards some
people would see the problem I would see
the possibility orders would see
when I was 19 I was on a date in the
laughter lounge a comedy club in Dublin
one of the comedians could help that
night and told a joke about dyslexia
everybody laughed
nobody in the room knew was dyslexic but
when he told that joke
I went bright red I felt completely in
shamed and I got really embarrassed
today I don’t see this lecture as a
negative I don’t see it as something
that holds me back last year I took a
stand up comedy course and at the end of
the course you have to deliver a routine
and that night on stage I told the joke
bare dyslexia and everybody laughed and
I felt brilliance today I see exact SIA
as a gift that has given me so much that
I regularly help out with the dyslexia
Association and help other people
dealing with dyslexia now obviously I
don’t help them with their CV or
application forms but what I do is I let
them see what’s possible so my talks on
challenging your thinking
now I’d like to challenge your thinking
so we need everybody in the audience to
stand on their feet now please don’t
worry okay don’t worry that look so
serious
okay I’d like you to turn to the person
okay okay
between the two years you need to decide
whose partner a and whose partner B do
there you go okay partner
ayyy put your hand in the air great
partner B you’re going first
okay so partner B I’m gonna give you 20
seconds okay what I’d like you to do is
point out as many things as you can and
call them out for example floor wall
ceiling chair partner a you’re gonna
count them the object of the exercise is
to get as high a number as possible are
we clear
time honzik we’ve got 25 or more Hanzo
people got between 20 and 25 hands up
you got between 15 and 20 hands up who
did not try at all okay so now we’re
gonna flip it now it’s partner a’s turn
but there’s a slight bit of a twist okay
so this time when partner aids goes when
you point out your first thing you say
nothing when you point out your second
thing you say your first for example
floor wall ceiling are we clear partner
B you’re gonna count their number as
it’s slightly more difficult I’m gonna
give you five extra seconds you’ve got
and time hannes Oh phoo got 25 or more
Hansie of you got 22 25 hands up who’d
like to sit down take a seat so the
point of that exercise was to get you to
challenge your thinking I’m gonna show
you now we could have done that exercise
slightly differently but got a better
outcome all you had to do was pick one
thing wall wall wall wall wall wall wall
wall wall okay so sometimes it’s that
simple
here’s what this lexi has taught me it
doesn’t matter what you pull out of the
bowl of life it doesn’t matter what you
get stuck with if you challenge your
thinking it doesn’t have to hold you
back thank you [Applause]
