Cassini — The Grand Finale | Yousef Faroukh | TEDxYouth@SAIS

okay hello good afternoon everyone this
is this from Hama Farooq I’m a senior
mechanical engineering student at the
University of Sharjah I’m also a
researcher at the University of Sharjah
and the further center for astronomy and
space sciences today I’m going to talk
about the Cassini mission which was a
mission that was built by the three
space agencies major space agencies NASA
which belongs to the United States the
European Space Agency which belongs to
Europe and the Italian space agency the
Cassini mission was basically had three
three primary objectives it was sent to
study Saturn which was which we
considered as the biggest planet in our
solar system
it’s to study its internal composition
the structure the weather of the planet
and its rings what are the composition
of its rings about the ice structures of
the of the Rings and one of its most
important moons which is Titan Titan is
believed by most astronomers that it is
a good place that can possibly harbor
life later on because it has an
atmosphere like like Earth not exactly
like Earth but it has an atmosphere the
mission took in total twenty years it
started at launch was in October 15 1997
at which to Saturn by 2004 the the Space
Shuttle the spaceship reached Saturn by
using and by using something an orbital
mechanics that we call gravity assess
gravity assist is where we where we use
another planet the gravitational pull to
accelerate a spaceship more on that
later and then from the year to wait
okay and then from the year 2004 until
2008 it started its primary mission
after its starting its primary mission
that took four years it took another two
more years which was called Equinox
mission and then after the Equinox
mission it took its final plunge where’s
NASA scientists call it the grand finale
that’s when it decided to to do you know
the mission was over we they had to send
the spaceship back into such an
atmosphere so this is what basically
happens with the gravity assist
astronomers once used the gravity SS to
slow down a meteorite that was going to
hit earth so what we can see we can see
a meteorite that is approaching earth
and moon’s orbit and using the gravity
of the earth and moon it will change its
it will change its direction of rotation
so that’s how that’s how the spaceship
gained momentum it used for four times
the used four types of the gravity SS
two times around Venus and then one time
around Earth so that it can reach Saturn
this is a picture of the moon Titan on
the Cassini mission there was a lander
which was called the ujin’s which landed
on Titan’s surface as we can see from
the images this is how the surface of
Titan looks like of course that we could
not send a lander to Saturn because
Saturn is a Kazakh planet it does not
have a solid surface like Earth and
Venus and other other solid planets as
they would call them
so after decommissioning after
completing its 20-years mission the
scientists decided that instead of just
sending it into space to wander they’re
going to send it deep inside deep inside
Saturn where it could collect more
information and more data which at first
the scientists could not think that you
know the information was that much of a
value but later on they they caught
breathtaking images and breathtaking
measurements that they could not have
gotten before so as we can see here we
can see a strong that’s on the northern
hemisphere this is just an entire storm
covering the planet from side to side on
the top this is this is a picture that
shows the icy compositions of of the
Rings towards the center you can see
that there is more ice on particle
differencing with the size and the
particle composition on the far end of
the of the of the planet this is a
picture of one of its moons the Hyperion
moon the picture is not clear but using
this image we can determine the
composition of of the planet and how its
surface would look like and this is just
a picture of Saturn by itself now before
the many of you might ask me like this
talk is about humanity and breaking
barriers so what does this
have to do to highlight the importance
of humanity and breaking barriers etc so
I’m going to leave you with an image
that was taken by Cassini as you can see
here that’s as you can see here that is
earth this pale blue dot is earth on it
everyone you love everyone you know
everyone you heard of every creator and
destroyer of civilization this is the
aggregate of our joy and suffering this
is where young couples fall in love this
is where everyone you know mothers
fathers their hopeful children every
saint and sinner every superstar or
supreme leader think of all the times
that Emperor is just spilled blood of
another people of the same humankind
just so that they can own a small piece
of this pixel right here it is it is it
makes sometimes makes me wonder why do
humans have this perception that we have
some kind of a privileged position in
this world so I believe that this image
can tell us a lot that we that’s our
only home and as far as we know
currently that’s our only home so we
have to learn to live with each other
and accept each other and love each
other because there is no help that’s
gonna come and to help us from ourselves
not from anywhere else so earth is the
only place where we make our stand so thank you
