if I type lawyers are into Google I get
this result lawyers are scum
lawyers are liars
where’s evil I’m a lawyer
back in 2001 I was a technology lawyer
in a prestigious London law firm but
before you write me off I did my
presentations using rap this prosecution
it’s hard copyright is so fun Thank You
fines in taxes up front be yo yo yo yo
then I realized there’s a really small
market for rapping lawyers in fact I had
a monopoly but why dr. Larry Richard the
lawyer and psychologist in the US has
data that shows that lawyers are
extremely low on sociability sociability
is a desire to interact with people I
had a desire to interact with people so
one Monday morning I was sitting in an
airless windowless office reviewing yet
another fad technology contract when the
words of that famous poet philosopher
and artist
Eminem
spoke to me the soul’s escaping through
a hole that is gaping that’s exactly how
I was feeling not that Eminem is usually
my career advisor but there was truths
in there yo something in me broke
I left the law one moment as the Asian
parents dream the next I was booming my
voice across regional radio as a DJ
single-handedly busting Asian
stereotypes I was a DJ for 10 years then
my mother’s voice like that song you
can’t get out of your head uh malloy a
girl in a rapping world it got even
louder I heard her saying oh yeah why
don’t you go back to free Hills so I
went back to the law don’t endure but
not as a lawyer in client relationship
management and things had really changed
the robots had come to lawyer town
almost all the work I did as a junior
lawyer in the 90s can now be done by a
robot that technology contract I
reviewed in that airless windowless room
done by a robot there’s a new robot
lawyer built on an artificial
intelligence platform that creates
confidentiality agreements in seven
minutes compared with the half a day it
took me how amazing all that drudgery
God that robot lawyer is called robot
lawyer Lisa our yueshen have stood thank
you one of my favorite robots is called
do not pay josh Browder a 19 year old
Stanford student got his driver’s
license
then quickly amassed a heap of mostly
unfair parking fines his parents did
what good parents do they refused to
keep paying them and he did what a smart
19 year old would do he locked himself
in his bedroom and he created a bot that
got him out of those unfair parking
fines he now offers it as a free service
and so far it has saved over four
million u.s. dollars this is disruption
and it’s happening in other professions
medicine engineering education pretty
much any job that is logical maybe
they’ll be a robot dr. Lisa well my
parents would be so proud
both a lawyer and a doctor within the
next two years one of our largest
institutions will appoint an AI machine
as a board member I feel like a huge
amounts of data and ask for its opinion
and if an AI machine could be a board
member is anyone safe what is left for
us what is it that humans can uniquely
do Sandi is a 40 year old mother of two
who wakes up every morning at 5:00 to
over 300 unread emails she plows through
the walls getting ready and by the time
she gets to work there’s a conga line of
people waiting to meet with her in
between she churns out urgent contracts
she’s a corporate lawyer overwhelmed
with busyness describing this Sandi
started to cry she wasn’t alone despite
this all-too-common despair nothing was
changing it so I co-founded a team
called reimagine legal designed to help
professionals like sandy she was shown
how to automate basic contracts to get
rid of the drudgery was he excited
no she hated it where we thought AI is a
gift she only saw it as a threat most of
us are frightened by change lawyers
terrified
that’s because lawyers are trained to
review all of the data and to ask what
is the worst that can happen what are
all the things that can go wrong that’s
the job of a lawyer they often come
across as more logical less emotional
more in their heads less in their hearts
in other words somewhat robotic then
along comes a machine that does robot
better than a lawyer can ever do and the
world becomes a dangerous place for
lawyers lawyers can’t stand still in the
face of this none of us can we have to
respond how are we going to respond
rather than compete head-to-head in a
race we can’t win
we can’t out robot the robot instead we
need to double down on being more human
what is it that a robot cannot yet
Express that only we can as humans
imagine you walk into a lush green oasis
with cushion line couches if favorite
coffee is waiting for you you smell the
calming scent of lavender with a hint of
lemongrass your warmly greeted by name
given a huge hug where are you you are
in court this scenario is underpinned by
the one thing we can express that robots
cannot empathy the way to double down on
being human is through an empathy
revolution empathy
is going to be the most important skill
in the 21st century when I moved from
being a DJ to an ABC breakfast presenter
I reveled in the intimate conversations
I had with my guests I shared moments of
laughter with tuna fish and politicians
and chefs later I went to Stanford
d.school to study human centered design
I learned it always starts with the
human it always starts with empathy
you’d be surprised how much is not
designed with empathy and people in mind
you know those 100 page unreadable terms
and conditions in teeny tiny writing
that you’re forced to accept with any
product they are not designed with
empathy and you in mind but things are
changing there is hope even lawyers have
started this journey they’re doubling
down on being human they’ve started to
use an approach called empathy
interviewing they’re asking their
customers hey how do you feel when you
receive a contract like this some client
responses are not repeatable so let’s go
back to Sandy Sandy’s in the middle of
an empathy revolution for the first time
she employers empathy interviewing she
said it’s like I met someone new today
Dave really opened up I never realized
these things were so important to him
Dave and sandy had been sharing an
office for 10 years it’s because the
robots have freed up our time that we
can do this human centric work the
challenge of AI forces us to rediscover
and value what is truly human in our
work and that is a higher gift
so one day when I type lawyers are into
Google I’d like to see these words
lawyers are caring lawyers are
compassionate lawyers are empathy
revolutionaries yo
