so there’s a certain irony to be
standing on stage at the university you
see when I was young I spent a whole lot
of time with the teachers sit on my
report card
I spent a whole lot of time staring out
truth is I spend my time staring out a
window every day still but this time I’m
getting paid for it this is the best
thing in the world so I spend a lot of
time looking at emerging technologies
I’m looking at what is coming so some
people say it’s a the role is being a
futurist I think it’s just a dream so
through a little bit so anybody super
geeky like me this happened last week
this is SpaceX thing yeah that’s it yeah
so we you know they launched the
heaviest biggest rocket ever created and
successfully landed there – rocket
boosters on the side simultaneously this
is just amazing because this progress
happen in about six years the rate of
progress in space is absolutely amazing
how this is happening
at the same time we have the rise and
crash a Bitcoin nobody got tech point of
the audience where did you buy it it’s
the question right so there’s a lot of
ups and downs happening so how do you
look at this what are the lenses that
you use to do that and really what we’re
talking about is technology and society
or sociology tech and society the
interplay between the two of them see
technologists and technology companies
just offer invaluable
offer product it’s up to you citizen
people systems of earth you’re the ones
who decide whether to accept or reject
what is coming so when thinking about
breaking barriers and breaking through
ultimately when it comes down to is is
there you know the large shift you know
in the social fabric it’s caused really
by a collective belief system that this
is something we want to embrace some of
idiots it’s a collective decision that
we do make wonder whether we’re going to
be using iPhones whether we’re gonna be
using whatsapp’s instagrams or all those
things it’s our decision so ingredient
for making which just happen how do we
make the shift into professor society
going forward and part of that is you
have to do it at the right time more
ideas failed because it’s just River
gear long time the other thing is is the
ring problem is it is it as a societal
problem that we are really fundamental
problems you looked at do you have the
right people involved in fixing matter
building that and finally having stopped
from regressing how do you stop it from
falling back do we make sure things
don’t fall through the cracks
so that’s your business this is about
right timing and this is everybody ever
seen this before by doing business we
need to look through the future lenses
through Gardeners of disillusionment now
I don’t know the barbarians don’t know
why he’s disagreeing on but this is what
we’ve been using for quite a few years
on predict in the future and we plot
technologies against this so essentially
it’s a beautiful side of it that
innovation starts off it’s usually the
rough form the first iteration of it I
feel like you’re really really excited
by it you know a lot of media is talking
about it and then it doesn’t matter the
expectations that eye drops into the
profit dis loserman
anybody thinking about their currencies
in that and then it kind of reproduces
itself it regenerates it’s a second
iteration or version
comes out and then it kind of starts
pulling itself back into the real world
and then you get into the slope of
enlightenment which sounds really really
cool and then you get to the plateau of
productivity and that’s when you start
getting market adoption that’s when you
kind of realize it’s not going to go
away we don’t we don’t turn companies
against our G chart technologies against
that so this is different technologies
22 gets the chart now one of the stuff
we have seen or heard of but this
couldn’t gives you an idea this is what
a gives you sends like virtual reality
is coming we already knew it a long time
ago let’s come to the trough and now
it’s coming and it’s going to be really
something because it’s gonna be the next
generation of it
augmented reality however is at the
bottom it’s in the role of being rebuilt
in the all the way up to the top height
what’s the biggest type thing right now
connected homes and effective homes deep
learning on a Thomas vehicles all the
stuff that we’re reading about right now
that everything really excited by is
going to drop into the trough and
they’ve been kind of going to like
what’s emerging this is a really cool
stuff right over here you’ve got human
augmentation quantum computing 1430
there’s a fourth dimension to printing
we didn’t know about and then you have
smart dust what is smart dust
that’s mark right well I had the
movement so well here’s what I tell them
smart dust is basically exactly what it
sounds like that was a bit of a
disappointment but it’s basically
computer the size of a pinhead
well actually think of a smallest pin
you’ve ever seen in your life the head
on that pin that’s the size of the
computer it’s coming this is this is
real this has been developed think about
the applications for this and think
about the implications of this right
this is what we’re just with that yeah
this is the stuff society we have to
figure out good nusiness go back to that
chart it’s about 10 15 years away so
here’s where things get perspective
perception is reality but this is what
you could really hope for if you’re in
the technology industry that’s called
hockey stick growth curves or an
exponential curve and this is what most
technologies go through and this is
where things take off where you’re
talking exponential growth of doubling
tripling 10 Xing hundred Xing you know
you’ve heard a lot about different
technologies that are really ramping up
very very quickly we have companies that
are going from nothing to being what we
call a unicorn’s which are billion
dollar valuations we’re seeing this
happen in like two months now the rapid
growth of these companies through
technology is just unbelievable and it’s
hard to even comprehend because as
humans
we’re mean you’re thinking it’s just the
way we provision like we Germans
thinking we’ve grown up with the idea
that progress kind of happens over time
if they can annualized or we think of
their bank interest like you know maybe
you can make a couple of percent or on
your investment together the savings
account we think about these things are
very linear kind of way
month this totally changes when you
start looking at new technology
especially disruptive technology so this
is where it’s it’s kind of the trumpet
disillusionment this is how you gotta
come out of it but mockery is kind of
what happens when you have the
exponential of the stuff that’s kind of
opening under and then the linear
thinkers are actually going oh this
doesn’t make any sense to me why would I
want to use some of these different
technologies this is the mantra period
and then so just for this example was
just talk about crypto currencies in
general if you said to somebody about a
bunch of crypto currencies three years
ago
you’re probably question here a lot if
you said that you’ve had at Christmas
time bought into a bunch of crypto
currencies I think we might people be
saying yeah me too
or I bought some program for Christmas
which is true it’s happening it’s
happening really really quickly
so you have this acceptance that’s
happening and that’s where that process
of that acceptance point that is the
most beautiful moment that is when it’s
like it’s gonna really happen the
challenge would say crypto at this point
that was society’s accepted it but now
I’m starting to freak out the regulators
as it starts growing governments banks
financial institutions are freaking out
this rocks the world it is so disruptive
but it’s coming and it’s not gonna
retreat it may go back into the trough
then we combine the background is
something really gibble good right now
the Freak Arizona so the iPhone effect
this was 10 years ago this is the
original bottle some of us a lot of us
were rather than modern really on some
device what’s really awesome about this
device is what’s inside of it it’s the
most elegant beautiful design but inside
is just ah to attend person ah man it’s
awesome inside because it has everything
going on inside it has Moore’s long with
the processing in the chip power it had
the camera was better than my digital
camera
and you know the mapping it does Maps
and then you have artificial
intelligence with series is like my best
friend now and you have energy storage
like we’re really really happy that the
phone lasts for a day right but so this
is where you get these exponential
curves you start stacking the ving Tsun
what I call the IV bundle or the iPhone
effect bundle and the bottom line being
the orange one think about is battery
time battery check has really been
flatlined for a long time it’s really
gonna take off it’s just kind of coming
into the perfect sweet spot hopefully in
the next two years of some new
technology that’s coming there because
of all that cool stuff that’s in the
iPhone you take basically the inside the
monofilament to stick it in a car it’s
got all the components really that you
want add some more sensors and you’ve
got self-driving autonomous cars right
follow me on this this is really good
right then you have the iPhone 5 plus 20
helicopters you get drones because it’s
all small miniaturized it’s lighter
which means it can fly right and you’ve
got amazing camera so you have like 4k
footage coming off of these things I
employed so follow me on this if you
think IV plus plus autonomy you get
flying cars it’s all a big problem so
this is saying if you want to be a
millionaire was it be a millionaire
students who don’t want to be another
billionaire anybody want the you know
yeah okay you want to be a billionaire
how billion people third straight up
simple and the problem is really we
spent a lot of time working on stuff
that’s rather inconsequential it took 12
years to actually take the posted over
from the lab to to market its paper and
glue but scientists and researchers and
all kinds of people were working for 12
years we don’t have 12 years to fix some
of the world’s biggest problems
everything that we’re doing to solve
some of the big problems in the world in
tech is could be a big part of the life
of effective times water and food supply
the iPhone effect against education this
is what we need to be thinking about all
of us not watching Netflix I would yeah
really this is serious we’re spending a
lot of time working us up the smarts
Minds it’s the same in the Silicon
Valley right now the smartest minds are
trying to figure out how to get ads into
your stream on Instagram instead of
working on some little things but this
is the intelligence is focused on the
wrong things
that’s not where the other thing is most
of us feel that it’s not up to us most
of us look to Yvonne Lansford
I’m in the UK so I should say Sir
Richard Branson we look at these guys
about the death of Chris Baker so the
guys that they’re going to plan forward
and make all this happen
well say what they’re just like us
they’re just like you on the inside they
still have the same fears to still have
families that we’re trying to take care
of but ultimately their risk is just
kind of their healthy it reaches of the
doing is their emotional side of things
ultimately they’re just optimists
they’re looking at all the things
they’re looking at where trends are I
don’t do it at the right time and it’s
all gonna work it all it’s about me
they’re really really smart because they
know how to find their tribe they know
how to find that people they’re gonna
help push them and their idea forward
none of them as much as they’d like you
like to think that they’re the only guys
doing it there’s a team of thousands of
people behind me that’s outwards so find
your tribe and what am I think about his
last century was all about discovering
he discovered hold on through research
this century it’s about building
together we’re building stuff amazing
I’m sure this is an exploding star or
black hole but just galaxies in general
I’m not gonna get into space however two
weeks ago I got a buddy too good of a
space tech conference and I’m kind of
geeky but not but it was really
inspiring because I’m meeting all these
people and we were shaking hands and
what are you working on and the person
would say I have this crazy idea I’m
gonna pick this satellite constellation
and we’re gonna be this great new
communications network that’s pretty
cool the next person I ready to do it
I’m doing lower low Earth orbit at
manufacturing we’re gonna be like doing
3d printing in orbit wow that’s pretty
cool everything’s crazy I don’t think
you’re crazy
it was amazing to see over a period of
the first day of that conference
everybody was using that we’re crazy
when they described but they’re working
on it by the afternoon they weren’t the
only crazy people it was a room full of
crazy peoples but all the crazy canceled
out the crazy so everybody was actually
just good with each other we found the
tribe
there was no egos and I got sucked into
it – I’m like can I help you everybody
was helping each other was really really
the most amazing thing to see the tribe
get built before your very eyes so the
first day went from crazy to we were
pretty good with this but still kind of
had this like there’s a high probability
of failure – the second day people going
like I just met this other person this
or the first thing with like goodbye to
our projects together and we’re going
for it and we’re doing this in 24 hours
48 hours we’re literally changing the
industry and these are all there is
really safe space tech startups
space is going to be a really big
category
really exciting so basically fine to
expand your tribe anybody better crazy
idea
find somebody else who’s sharing their
vision with you if you find something
doing something really crazy you like
what they’re doing join them and help
them that’s how it works
regression not the grants progression so
I thought before about the social fabric
and the collective shift well when I was
a kid I really wanted to go on a comic
board that was like I want to go
supersonic
that was the alternate on that oh yeah
but essentially people weren’t going to
pay $10,000 the same that much time it
was experienced but not with that much
money and society basically said going
back to the society deciding Society
said it sits in a bucks for 600 hours an
hour get 600 miles sounds about right
and that was kind of the end of
supersonic travel with an exploration
everybody kind of knows would happen
with the u.s. went to the moon the stuff
going to the moon in fact the space
industry basically almost did everything
to cut down in the last 35 years and now
it’s coming back and it’s coming back
through private industry but ultimately
it was through again some financing to
the politicians this is something I
don’t think we should would be spending
a lot of time again politicians are a
mirror of the society they represent
so try to be some things for regressing
I think part of it is dreaming and
people still dreaming and with me into
the future and the good news is we’re
getting back in there and it’s private
so we’re getting back in the supersonic
travel there’s a couple of programs
right now coming together with
supersonic travel and there’s a
multitude of actual programs on people
heading back to moon loon we have people
working at getting to asteroids to do
mining and we all know that we’re
heading to Mars right it’s coming like
it’s real Supergirl
so this is you know was a crazy idea
until I meet other crazy people but this
is what
company working on essentially air taxis
by 2025 this is our prototype it only
exists in a computer but we’re looking
to make it real very quickly because by
2022 years from now right
sorry Dallas and Los Angeles and Dubai
will be doing demos like it’s really
really really quickly now going back the
whole stack of all these words and
technologies we have to do with that
plus a multitude of other things like
how do we deal with CT and how do we
deal with autonomy and how do we deal
with airspace and how we do with all
these things have a goal all these
barriers out of the way we find the best
people we care we believe that we’re not
crazy and by getting everybody getting
together of working on it it’s gonna
make a difference
I’m gonna say John what are you working
on that it ultimately comes down to I’ve
spent a long time in technology
ultimately most of what I’ve created in
last 20-some odd years you can’t see I
can’t point to it but ultimately I think
we won’t want to leave a legacy that you
all want to leave something behind that
our grandchildren can look at it saying
oh my grandparents did that and that’s
what I feel everybody so what’s your big
idea what do you want to fix Society is
waiting for you to step up we’ll build
something awesome thank you [Applause]
standing on stage at the university you

vision with you if you find something
doing something really crazy you like
what they’re doing join them and help
them that’s how it works
regression not the grants progression so
I thought before about the social fabric
and the collective shift well when I was
a kid I really wanted to go on a comic
board that was like I want to go
supersonic
that was the alternate on that oh yeah
but essentially people weren’t going to
pay $10,000 the same that much time it
was experienced but not with that much
money and society basically said going
back to the society deciding Society
said it sits in a bucks for 600 hours an
hour get 600 miles sounds about right
and that was kind of the end of
supersonic travel with an exploration
everybody kind of knows would happen
with the u.s. went to the moon the stuff
going to the moon in fact the space
industry basically almost did everything
to cut down in the last 35 years and now
it’s coming back and it’s coming back
through private industry but ultimately
it was through again some financing to
the politicians this is something I
don’t think we should would be spending
a lot of time again politicians are a
mirror of the society they represent
so try to be some things for regressing
I think part of it is dreaming and
people still dreaming and with me into
the future and the good news is we’re
getting back in there and it’s private
so we’re getting back in the supersonic
travel there’s a couple of programs
right now coming together with
supersonic travel and there’s a
multitude of actual programs on people
heading back to moon loon we have people
working at getting to asteroids to do
mining and we all know that we’re
heading to Mars right it’s coming like
it’s real Supergirl
so this is you know was a crazy idea
until I meet other crazy people but this
is what
company working on essentially air taxis
by 2025 this is our prototype it only
exists in a computer but we’re looking
to make it real very quickly because by
2022 years from now right
sorry Dallas and Los Angeles and Dubai
will be doing demos like it’s really
really really quickly now going back the
whole stack of all these words and
technologies we have to do with that
plus a multitude of other things like
how do we deal with CT and how do we
deal with autonomy and how do we deal
with airspace and how we do with all
these things have a goal all these
barriers out of the way we find the best
people we care we believe that we’re not
crazy and by getting everybody getting
together of working on it it’s gonna
make a difference
I’m gonna say John what are you working
on that it ultimately comes down to I’ve
spent a long time in technology
ultimately most of what I’ve created in
last 20-some odd years you can’t see I
can’t point to it but ultimately I think
we won’t want to leave a legacy that you
all want to leave something behind that
our grandchildren can look at it saying
oh my grandparents did that and that’s
what I feel everybody so what’s your big
idea what do you want to fix Society is
waiting for you to step up we’ll build
something awesome thank you [Applause]
