good afternoon everyone thank you for
having me here madam principal the
school and all the eminent speakers who
spoke before me and I will speak after
me and it’s it’s been a privilege and
very inspiring to hear all the stories
and you know when I when I look at this
and when I heard the introduction the
gentleman gave just now and I and I look
at that that you know that picture of
mine the bearded guy is looking back at
me and I’m reading this profile and I’m
thinking that he has a senior news
editor and his job is to speak every day
at 8 p.m. also on reports his job job is
to communicate with people when I look
at this all I can say is it was not
always like this at all and you know I
was wondering whether I should start or
whether I should even talk about this or
not
but the reality is that I in my
formative years as a child when I was
growing up it wasn’t very easy in terms
of how I was treated in school I’ve been
basically a very bad victim of bullying
when I was a child when I was in class 1
and 2 very badly bullied in a very
common school of Delhi unfortunately and
it was so bad that you know it really
affected my self confidence my
self-esteem I became an introvert and
you know when something sort of happens
repeatedly when you’re a child you can
you know you carry those memories with
you for a very long time and so I
changed schools I got set in a new
school I started making friends and I
realized over there that finally I’m
slowly starting to regain my
self-confidence my self-esteem and you
know I’m feeling a little better about
myself but then because of my father’s
job I had to travel once again so I had
to again start the entire process all
over and this has happened over and over
again but having said this you know the
there was a point in my life when I
realized that while growing up you know
listening to things like people saying
that you know you won’t talk too much
you know why aren’t you interacting with
everyone you know my parents will try
and push me and say Joe becomes a bath
broker on sabbatical or a kilo but I
would not want to children when they
would go out in the evenings after
school to play I would never go because
I lacked that confidence and you know in
that sense slowly what I I got tired of
listening up to all of that and I felt
that if someone can make a difference it
has to be me it has to be me it has to
come from inside and you know again that
the factory is now I’m in a job where I
speak to people would you ever ever ever
imagine that and in a job in which I’ve
been a you know I started as a crime
reporter having interacted Mystica a
couple of times as well I started as a
crime reporter and my job you know what
I’m basically trying to say is that I I
decided to break that barrier and take
part or participate in a career where I
would have to have to beat that fear of
mine and I decided that this was the
only way if I became a mass communicator
if I became someone who would speak who
would you know speak for a living which
is what I do now that’s my job you know
that is the only way which I will where
I will beat my you know initial fears
and I think I have done that finally and
it’s been twelve years in this
profession where I have constantly sort
of you know I’ve covered lots of areas
my area of specialization has been
conflict conflict reporting takes you do
all the you know sort of messy places
where something is going wrong where you
have to make sense of it and the biggest
biggest point is to communicate over
there where you have to communicate
because without communication as and as
one of our earlier speakers also spoke
without communication you give rise to
misunderstanding misconception and half
the conflict around the world I’m sure
you will agree even in India most of the
conflicts arise out of misunderstandings
religious misunderstandings cultural
misunderstanding it’s a historical
misunderstandings most of the conflicts
arise from misunderstandings so how you
plug that is honest
you plug it with communication where the
role of media person is extremely
important and in that sense I you know
I’ve I’ve been to the borders of India
to report on conflict I’ve spent a lot
of time in Kashmir and I realize like
for instance when the question with
floods happen the devastating Kashmiri
floods I was there for one week and the
biggest allegation against the media was
that you’re not covering the the
Kashmiri flux from the Kashmiri point of
view you’re only doing it sitting in
those army choppers travelling around
and you know tracking how the Indian
government is you know sort of is
ensuring all the supplies are there
there was great work that was being done
by its security forces but it is always
important to also communicate with the
people because the sense that people got
was that people English we are very
angry that no one is doing anything
about it so when I went I communicated
with them I decided that I have to leave
where you are and go right deep into the
people so all those initial years of
inhibition of not talking to people all
came back because at that time I felt
that this is where I need to test myself
every day with every assignment that I
get I need to test myself how do I test
myself I speak to people I go and I you
know I beat that initial inhibition
which I don’t have anymore
and I try and force relationships
relationships that are insured I will
always always carry with me and I will
not forget the visiting cards that you
give me I will always ensure that there
is some relationship that isn’t that
that exists forever because it is all
about relationships it is all about how
you forge bonds because you know that is
how you function as a society and as
strongest stronger bond means a stronger
Society and at a time when unfortunately
headlines dominate about divisions and
you know politics you know I think
that’s why I bring it back to
communication and basically what I’m
trying to see is that it’s all about
breaking the barrier of what you feel is
your biggest challenge my challenge was
speaking to people you know my father
would be told by relatives in
betta butta oh yeah
I will also sort of you know short in
height I’m not saying I’m number taller
now but I was all short in height and I
would always be a little you know
inhibited but all of that added on to it
so but I also feel somewhere in my you
know in my subconscious I wanted to beat
that and that’s why this profession
attracted me because it meant that I
would have to beat that barrier I would
have to break it every day of my life
speaking and talking to people in the
most difficult circumstances in riot
situations where anything you say can go
wrong so you have to be very careful
about how you speak and that’s my
profession so I have been short that I
practice that and I break a barrier
every day and create that domino effect
for myself so one barrier broken
dominoes topple and only recently this
show that you’re saying in news 360 it
airs every day at 8 p.m. in the evening
what we based basically decided to do
with all the editors is we decided that
we you know right now what do you do
when you sit on the television in the
evenings on a news channel all you see
are windows and lots of conversations
where everyone’s yelling at each other
am i right most of the time they’re you
everyone agrees but you will still watch
it because it’s entertaining right uh
but the reality is we felt that news
channels are not going back to the
basics news channels are supposed to be
news you’re supposed to give the news
what happened in India what happened in
the world what something good did maybe
well you know mr. cholera has adopted
another brilliant project which needs to
be spoken about you heard he was the
second speaker who gave this you know
beautiful presentation about the kind of
good that is there in our society and
that is where we decided on India 360
every day if you tuned in you’ll see at
8 p.m. what we do is we compile we don’t
talk to a single reporter we don’t talk
to uh single politician we don’t talk to
us in the analyst there’s just me and we
talk for 30 minutes about the news what
has happened around the world from the
good the bad the ugly the disgusting to
the funny the cute you know animals
anything because it’s important people
enjoy that kind of thing
I would like and you know this roads
getting a lot of good responses as well
because I think pressing the reset
button and creating that social barrier
written that mental barrier also about
how media has been perceived these days
is important and I think with this show
we’re doing that so I would urge you all
to maybe you know just you in at some
point in time on the weekday is at 8 o
clock and see what we’re doing because
we’re going back to the basics in the
short period of time but we’re still
trying to do that we still have debate
programs which is also important but
we’re still trying to do that anyway so
I’m not born for too long but so from
the boy who grew up you know coming back
from school with a bloodied nose you
know with a shirt torn with scars on his
head when I look back and I think of
those scars which still remain with me
the inhibition does not remain with me
anymore the feeling of being bullied the
feeling of being a victim doesn’t remain
anymore because I’ve done something
about it I’ve tried to do something
about it and I think that I’ve chosen a
line in which I need to beat the thing
that was going to be a huge factor in my
life if I hadn’t recognized it and I
hadn’t done something about it so in
that sense I’ve broken that barrier for
myself and I would urge all of you you
know when you go out speak to people
don’t feel that you can’t you can’t do
something just because you’ve been and
I’m sure you people in this room who
have been bullying you know and there
are different types of being bullied so
just try and beat that inhibition speak
to as many people as you can
you know forge relationships you know
chat will be with people my friends
always make Olivieri everyone but I
enjoy that you know I like to know you
know maybe the person who I’m speaking
to like for instance at a restaurant
I’ll give you an example whenever I go I
always first thing I ask the name of the
waiter so that I will not have to
address him by singing excuse me I can
address in my name it’s just a little
example I’m saying in forging
relationships you can apply that
anywhere you want and again it all boils
down to communication
boils down to you speaking to people
forging relationships and making them
strong you feel good the other person
feels good you function together and at
a time when we’re talking about unity
again I think these are very important
aspects oh I have heard this and in a
position that I’m in now where I feel
that I have been given a platform where
I can speak to people on a national news
channel I would like to bring out these
values in my reportage where a report on
sensitive issues like conflict I like to
bring out these values I don’t simply
will report on what is happening I will
report on a situation which will try and
make a difference to the people who are
present on location not just as the
victims but what really can be done as
awareness our job is to create awareness
anyway so I think I’m going to end on
that note and thank you very much once
again Amity for giving me the platform
the organs been very nice to me and I
would love to take any questions at any
point of time my contact is there with
the school so any student who ever wants
to interact with me or anything if you
guys want to just come over to the
studio one day please go ahead any time
I would love to be with you guys thank
you so much thank you so much
