and I’m more used to speaking to 30
children and 450 adults so if you get
your books out of your trays I’ll do the
register I’m waiting it’s your time
you’re wasting and late last year my
daughter Daisy who’s 8 years old started
doing something she started asking me
for a horse I’d wake up in the morning
she’d ask me for a horse I’d make her
breakfast she had asked me for a horse
driving her to school she’d ask me for a
horse even when I asked her what she
wanted for tea
she asked me frontloader Sonia she also
Villa Sonia nevertheless after about a
month of this relentless questioning the
whole time can I have a horse kind of a
horse she suddenly changed tack and she
asked for a puppy sensing freedom I
immediately jumped on this and said
absolutely course you can absolutely and
then when I paused
I suddenly realized what she’d been
doing and exactly how brilliantly I’ve
been played by my eight-year-old sadly
that’s a work of fiction in reality I’m
allergic to my daughter and but I think
as to good messages about building your
bravery and about having ambitious ideas
and I want to talk to you today about
this with regard to education I’m a
teacher surprise surprise and I love it
because it’s so creative and it’s one of
the most creative jobs you can ever have
you’re given the bare bones of a
curriculum and then given relative free
rein to get that and part that
curriculum into the children in any way
you can when I speak to friends outside
of Education who are nervous about doing
a presentation I laugh sometimes aloud
saying yeah try doing a presentation for
five hours every day 230 people who are
more interested in what’s for lunch than
anything you’re talking about I have a
question for you today
Ted what Ted people although if there is
a Ted here it’s especially for you
who holds your magic wand when I asked
teachers if they had a magic wand what
they’d wish for one of two things
happens the first type of people their
eyes light up and tons of ideas pour out
of them the other set of people their
eyes light up briefly then slumped down
you see some people have a magic wand
and they know how to wave it and know
how to create magic other people don’t
feel they’ve got a magic wand or feel
that someone else is holding it for them
and that’s incredibly sad you see when
you wish for something its wishes only
come true in fairy tales wishes seem
unattainable wishes have some sort of
strange alchemy beyond our belief but
what if we chained wished to wise what
if wise was our word suddenly it could
be whoa it sounds exciting
see wise is a much better more
passionate way of approaching a problem
we have this creativity and yet we have
this challenge while our curriculum has
gone from a massive stack of folders to
a small booklet our ideas have gone from
our brains to a search bar don’t our
children deserve better than Siri give
me some ideas on teaching place value I
think this is because of the no spiral
it’s what I call the no spiral you have
an idea you share that idea it gets
knocked back down the idea dies if
you’re surrounded in negativity that
happens so much that your ambition can
die you keep on coming with ideas they
get knocked back you stop suggesting
ideas you go to the things that are
familiar what my friend Lillian Ezekiel
calls familiar innovation safe proven
ideas and that’s really really sad
because these big ideas these are the
adventures that actually make up how
primary school memories these are the
ones that shape character when you think
back to your own primary school years
what are the things that you stand out
for you I’m sure they’re the trips and
the outings the plays those librarians
sharing this amazing book for you all
these events are really really
and yet sometimes they’re hidden away we
have a curriculum and then we have an
experience a curriculum and then an
experience and we seem to jump between
the two yet when you merge those two
then you get enrichments that’s when
children really discover the links
between the world
that’s when children really find out who
they are and what they want to be when
the curriculum is deepened and this
isn’t just putting on a fancy outfit or
anything like that really good
enrichment is baked into the curriculum
not painted on and this is when you get
the the yes spiral when you get this yes
spiral it’s when you’re surrounded by
people who are positive and encouraging
to those ideas doesn’t mean that they
won’t challenge them but they will
support you and they will see where
you’re going the learning benefit in
this and that’s really really important
to surround yourself with the positive
people you have an idea
it gets challenged but support it your
ideas become more ambitious and more
ambitious and more ambitious we as
education need to be innovation
architects Walt Disney called it
Imagineering imagining your way up into
space and then engineering it back down
sometimes by a very tolerant business
manager as I have and rule 47 of TED
Talks says that there should be a handy
acronym for anything you’re talking
about or a formula what is this for me
you ask right we’re all gonna have to
try much harder what is this formula you
ask
nope you’re clever okay it’s up on the
screen its idea number one issue a press
release Amazon do this before I spend a
single penny on any of their product
launches they write the press release
that would go out to the online media if
it’s not interesting enough to be picked
up by the online media they don’t make
the products so do that for your ideas
right the press release that you would
send to your local newspaper if it
doesn’t if it doesn’t inspire them to
publish it then don’t play with that
idea build it up to two dee-dee-dee
demonstrate need or two we can have two
let’s go for tea to demonstrate need in
1992 far before when I was born the
Great Britain team rowing team won the
Olympic golds with a training mantra
called does it make the boat go faster
everything they did in their training
was about pushing that boat faster if it
didn’t make the boat go faster they
didn’t do it you have a card and
munching Millennials might think of this
as marginal games do the same with your
idea if your idea won’t improve learning
don’t do it or change it so it does
improve the learning 3 shall we say a
backwards 3e engage your community we
call this a seatbelt moment at my school
those of you who are parents you’ll
remember this experience when your
child’s in the back of the car after an
amazing day
probably dressed as a tutor and they’re
straining at the seat belts want you to
tell you about that day now wouldn’t we
want one of those days a week for our
children or two of those days or three
of those days if your idea is great but
worthy and a little bit dull turn it
around and engage your community that’s
not just the children that’s the parents
the governing body and yes the children
themselves and parents 4 7 9 ay ay there
we are
Amen Bishop think about the one child
that’s going to make a difference to in
their lives then think about how it’s
gonna make a difference to the class
then think bigger could this roll out
over the school
this rollout regionally nationally
internationally go for the horse don’t
go for the dog go for the horse because
you might get the dog at the very least
um I’m very very lucky because I’m
surrounded by very very positive
leadership and you can’t do any big
ideas without having the support of
friends and mentors and strong
passionate leaders who are positive and
challenge you and say does this improve
learning will make things amazing things
happen so here’s some of the things that
we did at my school together as a team
in the last year we put on a Leadership
Conference for eight-year-olds with
world renowned speakers coming to talk
like this fewer people but still
eight-year-old so we enjoyed ourselves
and had an amazing packed lunch and we
transformed a disused classroom into
what we call a beach scene the
lighthouse complete with deck chairs
beach hats astroturf disco lights and a
secret room now anis try again and a
secret room yeah it’s pretty good eh we
were tired of off the peg residential so
we decided to put on a festival and we
this is complete with a silent disco
crime scene investigation workshops for
a hundred and seventy five children it
worked out cheaper than the off the peg
Residential’s that you get the catalogs
for every single term and lastly in
November we planted a forest of trees
this is what it looks like in 50 years
time
there’s there’s a famous proverb that
says the best time to plant a tree is 50
years ago that the best next best time
is tomorrow we did it in November and
there’s a there’s a there’s a massively
long-running joke that in 50 years time
when you go on Google Maps and look over
the school you’ll see a forest with the
word joy spelt out in trees all of this
is possible and it’s about building your
bravery and the secret to building your
bravery is simple its courage on repeat
for 10 seconds so aim ambitiously
and don’t forget imagine ask plan repeat
thank you
[Applause] [Music]
