Blackouts on Possibly Black Opinions | Ji yoon Lee | TEDxYouth@TFLHS

the term black-and-whites

has many different meanings what it in

terms of color like this when we see

these two pictures right here one is

black and the other is white another

meaning the meaning I will be talking

about today is in terms of ideas as in

good or bad in general terms black

opinions Appleton’s as bad opinions and

whites opinions awful tone as good

opinion people have the right to kill

small animals

that’s a black opinion people should

help the grandmother with lots of

baggage across the road that’s a white

opinion in this way people have their

own black and white be it on the

favorite breakfast cereal politician or

superhero however on the internet there

are people who decide their black and

whites or what they perceive to be right

and wrong is concrete these people use

their influence to rub out so-called

black opinions out of their medium the

problem is that these people actually

determine what truth you see every day

they’re supposed to be truthful and they

influence a lot of information you see

I’m talking about the people who watch

over your social media look I know I may

sound like a conspiracy theorist but

listen to me just this once and I’ll

show you one of the closest examples of

this photo censorship can be found right

here on your mobile phone there’s anyone

in this audience to you today you

something called Facebook you use

Facebook please raise your hands if you

use something called Facebook well

that’s a lot of people with me here

today so on Facebook there’s the

training tab and have you noticed that

the trending tab is a little bit strange

maybe it shows you a story that did not

have many likes or something that fit on

it too close to your entrance

turns out employee on Facebook routinely

deleted stories that were not

appropriate from the training tab and

added in their own stories that fit to

their agenda which was mostly

left-leaning and biased they seem to be

weeding out the black from their brand

of whites Facebook is not the only

medium to do this

places like Instagram YouTube and

Twitter use a nasty little tactic called

shadow banning channel banning is the

process of making one’s content only

able to be seen by people who are not

their followers it’s usually a response

to people who spam or people who say

nasty things to others however it can

also be used to silence accounts that

has something controversial to say the

problem with this sort of banning is

that these people do not know that they

have been and they don’t know why

they’re back some lucky people get

emails saying that they were banned for

inappropriate content but most of the

time they don’t get anything at all and

they never seem to gain you subscribers

get new views and the channel just seems

to stagnate the tools or the sorts of

censorship are evolving making it even

easier to black out opinions that are

actually white in color

this is perspective API is a program

developed by Google which can judge a

comment on its toxicity or nastiness

it does this by craving what words they

use in their comments the programmers of

this program have said that they will

not be using this to connote any sort of

bias but if there are people online who

believe they’re black and white this

country and they should delete some

opinions there is no way of knowing how

such a program will be used

so today I’ve told you that there are

some opinions on the internet that by

consensus and companies do this actually

routinely is this helping we today can

do about this actually I believe there

is first we should know that censorship

does happen online and that you

yourselves might be censored another

thing is that we should know that there

are some opinions are just as valid as

ours that consensus just because they’re

controversial or they do not support an

agenda the third thing to do is to look

at information online critically it’s

what I am reading right now really true

if there another perspective to this

problem it’s always important to keep an

open mind the final thing I want to tell

you here in this audience today in fact

when it comes to opinions there is no

absolute black or white so we should not

shun other opinions like Facebook does

by being a spice but to black we should

not block ourselves from reading certain

opinions like Twitter buzz we should not

judge an opinion on the words they use

my perspective API does and we should

never block fan censor or erase certain

opinions just because they seem black

like so many media platforms do by

shadow banning their people please

remember that there are black opinions

there are white opinions but most

opinions are actually
