how often do you listen you know to that
gut feeling that strange pull or idea
that seems to come from out of the blue
the one that makes you question your
purpose yet sparks your curiosity the
one that disrupts your plans consumes
you how often do you trust it follow it
and let it guide you on may 29th 2014 I
went to reach for a glass of water and
suddenly collapsed in my kitchen numb
confused and unable to move in that
moment I completely surrendered to my
plan and what I thought I should be
doing knowing that something greater was
clearly trying to get my attention fonia
would listen a few weeks later my inner
voice stopped me in my tracks delivering
a message that was so clear it terrified
me yes mean it said quit your job and go
be of service around the world for six
months you will start in Vietnam
Cambodia India you will leave in
November this is your purpose project I
tried to ignore it but the thoughts
started consume me until I knew I had to
just close my eyes in jump the thing
about jumping is when you jump people
notice people tried to convince me that
I was crazy for actually acting on my
inner voice they said what do you mean
you’re gonna quit your job you can’t
possibly do this alone how will you
raise enough money you see had so many
supporters and cheerleaders yet I was
hung up on all the critics had I
listened to them I would have given up
however in those incredibly sensitive
and vulnerable times I would hear the
subtle whisper say keep going
listening to our inner voice how exactly
do we do this when I feel a tug I act on
it so far I found zero shortcuts listen
consider respond create each step serves
a purpose just sir phones mapping will
redirect us when we’ve missed a turn so
does our inner guidance we start with
mindfulness and meditation the average
American has at least 50,000 thoughts
per day crazy right what’s frightening
is that the majority these thoughts are
focused on past worries or future
anxieties but seldom in this very moment
which is the only place we have the
power to change our minds are filled
with non-stop chatter that often drowns
out that vital inner voice I spend at
least 20 minutes every day disconnecting
and listening in solitude which makes me
aware of the noise it’s relentless pace
the first time we were able to stand up
together and his legs didn’t collapse
from underneath him was a special moment
for me their existence was a
hand-to-mouth struggle the look on their
faces when they watch their water go
clear I didn’t know when she would take
her last breath but knowing that she was
showered with love and affection made me
feel a sense of purpose I am NOT a
mother but spending time with these
children brought that out in me and I
love them like they were my own every
day I counted elephant poop I’ve never
seen that much poop in my entire life I
showed up I listened and I learned how
to build from the ground up which made
me feel empowered when I saw the
physical difference I made meet new
she is blind and suffers from severe
mental and emotional trauma I remember
when I first witnessed her banging her
head as hard as she could against the
wall she would take her thumbs she would
press them deep into her eye sockets to
stimulate the optical nerve so she would
see stars calming her down I watched in
sheer panic clueless at what to do in
those moments when I felt raw and
uncomfortable it forced me be completely
present once again hearing the subtle
whisper say sing to her on my last day I
sang her one last song and to my
amazement she smiled for the first time
putting your hand on mine
[Music]
new was my greatest teacher she tested
me to see if I would persevere and keep
believing in her and the power of love
in affection and in our voices even when
she showed me no sign or response you
see the real magic is in the marination
can you hear it with patience and
silence I can hear the whisper though I
am virtually connected at times I am
deaf to my inner voice when I am present
I look up instead of down and trust that
tug when it comes calling me to action I
have found that when i disconnect I am
