there are a lot of weird smells on
college campuses right we’re all on a
college campus you’ve smelled a lot of
weird things dining halls in the gym
locker room don’t even get me started
with the dorm room but one day I was
walking back up to my dorm room and
there was a large coca-cola truck parked
outside the dining hall and I was
walking by and yes there’s some car
exhaust as I was walking by it
inhaled the car exhaust like that smells
so good to me why does that smell so
good to me and then I got to thinking
about a lot of things as to why do I
like the smell of nail polish remover
gasoline modge podge why do I love the
things that are toxic for me and then I
kind of thinking about other things and
why is it that I love the things that
are toxic for me in my life I mean first
of all brownies we all love brownies
right I mean who doesn’t but I’ve made
brownies before I know what’s in those
brownies I know that they’re bad for me
and yet I continue to eat them over and
over again there’s so many things in our
life that we know are bad and yet we
continue to do them even though that we
know that they’re bad for us and as I
was brainstorming this idea I came up
with three reasons why I feel like we
continue to do the things that we do
even though we know that they’re harmful
for us and the first one is consequences
so based off the consequences that you
experience you may or may not be likely
to do that action again for example
going to the gym we all know that going
to the gym is good for you but if you go
to the gym and you experience pain
soreness maybe some embarrassment you
got some gym Tama Dacian going on you
may not be wanting to go back or you
could go to the gym experience serotonin
endorphins and those happy hormones and
you’re going to go to the gym again so
based off the consequences that you
experience you may go back secondly you
have moral dimension so we all come from
different frames of references
backgrounds etc etc so what I perceive
to be right may not about me what you
perceive to be right so we may just be
acting on a moral dimension and lastly
we have the biological domain so based
off of our DNA and what
how we’re made up we may act as act a
different way so our personalities are
typically based off of our environment
as well as our personality so some
people are higher in sensation-seeking
and what that means is they might be
more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol
based off of that personality trait and
we don’t think there’s a slew of reasons
why we have toxicity why it’s here I
think there is a way that we can solve
this and I call it the nose ring
principle now before you start to think
that nose ring is an act of teenage
rebellion this is not necessarily the
case so just bear with me as I finish
the story so a couple of years ago I
worked as a summer camp counselor and I
met this woman named Amy Dinkins and she
was a missionary in Nairobi Kenya one of
the most awesome women I’ve ever met and
she had her nose pierced he was like a
middle-aged woman I’m like oh my gosh
you’re the coolest person ever I want to
be like you and I also found out that
getting your nose pierced actually in
Africa means a sign of fertility and
prosperity and while I’m not really
thinking about fertility right now
prosperity sounds pretty good so I told
everyone that I wanted a nose piercing
like I probably like I was telling
everyone it probably did not there was
not a conversation that went by where I
probably didn’t talk about it and as
time went on I went back home was done
with camp cuz actually tried to get my
nose pierced while I was at camp they’re
like you’re not allowed to leave he knew
this what are you doing Morgan and so
whenever I came back home and decided
you know maybe you know maybe I don’t
want to get a nose piercing I mean this
is you know a hunk of metal for my face
that’s like a tattoo like I’m like its
it seemed very intimidating to me and I
didn’t want to do it anymore
and I had all these people calling me
being like Morgan what are you doing
this is what you wanted get in the car
we’re going to go get your nose pierced
we’re leaving today so within the hour
next thing you know I have a hunk of
metal hanging from my face and I’m here
to tell the tale
so why is that important to anything
that I’m telling you today why is that
relevant to toxicity but we are the
creators of our own environments nature
did not invent fossil fuels nature did
not invent climate change we did that we
brought toxicity here so we’re the only
people who can eliminate it and I think
that the drug of choice for 2017-2018 is
truly self promotion we’re all about
ourselves we think gay America
individualism but really that’s not how
we thrive you see what I found that day
was I found this circle of safety of
people who loved and supported me and
you this crazy thing that I wanted to do
this weird outlandish nose ring piercing
idea they were gonna support me how
weird it is and I think that that’s how
we truly capture our horizons we capture
innovation we capture creativity is when
we have that circle of safety and people
that we can fall back on and people that
have our backs even if it doesn’t
necessarily make sense so how do we do
this I’m not saying that you know
tomorrow it’s gonna happen we’re gonna
have this world full of rainbows and
flowers and it’s gonna be absolutely
incredible because that’s probably not
going to happen but I will say it starts
one day at a time one person at a time
when act at a time we can truly begin to
create these environments that eradicate
toxicity it just starts with one day at
a time one person at a time when action
at a time so think about that the next
time you smell a Sharpie or the next
time you decide to get an exotic piercing thank you
