Adventures of an African traveller in Russia | Omoseva Atobatele | TEDxTomskStateUniversity

over the time I’ve spent in Russia I’ve
gotten lots of interest and questions
about my life and study here this isn’t
entirely surprising because while Russia
gets its fair share of visitors it’s not
a hugely popular destination for most
holidaymakers that Russia is not on an
average travelers radar could be due to
several factors factors like it gets
really cold most of the year it has a
reputation for being a what really
expensive and it complicates its
political past and it’s unclear
political future makes it a far more
attractive for vacation in Taurus Hobbs
located in nearby Western Europe in 2015
London and Paris were ranked the four
standard most visited cities in the
world respectively moreover though it
may be purely conjecture Russians an era
known has been the warmest of
friendliest people Russia does remain
largely unexplored by the general
tourist population given all of the
above I totally get why people are
interested in my life here their
interest comes from a place of simply
not knowing but apart from the
frequently asked so what is it like here
questions my stay here has also elicited
a lots of curiosity from fellow African
travelers who are time and time again
what is it like to travel here as a
person who is melanin blessed as I share
my pictures and observations online I
get variations of the same questions
over and over again questions like is it
true that Russians are racist towards
black people did you suffer any racial
discrimination in Russia what
experience in Russia traveling as a
black woman so I’m going to share my
experiences today but in order to
understand why this question pops up so
much it is necessary to understand the
history of the African descendant people
in Russia and its former Soviet
republics hmm
given my research I was surprised to
discover that black folks have long had
a presence here since what was known as
the USSR according to an article
hundreds of african-americans have
traveled here between 1920 and 1930 in
an attempt to make a better life for
themselves as well as to escape the
economic strife and the ratio per
situation that they have faced in the
USA blacks from the African continent
ran far behind an article explains that
they relocated here in large numbers
being recruited by officials promising
free university education the social
climate for black sauce does good with
skilled black laborers and professionals
often receiving enviable salaries in the
front and subsidized housing but all of
this contrasts sharply with recent
depiction of race relation in Russia a
quick Google search reviews articles
about black people against black people
across the country which at its best has
included verbal abusers like the racial
epithets been hold as black soccer
players during marches and at its worst
as culminated in outright physical
violence during games on Russian soil so
it does no surprised as black travelers
of the present day are concerned about
their safety and well-being while
traveling on Russian soil which brings
me to the question
we’re traveling while black on Russian
salt puts them in harm’s way the short
version of my experience so far has been
I have had no issues in my time here in
Tomsk in fact I’ve been treated
definitely well I get a lot of love from
the local people and this is shocking to
me based on what I’ve heard and read
about race relation in Russia the lung
fashion every day I feel I am received
it’s open house I get a lot of curious
looks but none of the long laser-focused
airs I’ve encountered in many parts of
Asia people here I extremely polite
cordial and helpful especially in
nervously brisk which is decidedly the
most Russian of the cities in Siberia
of course and Petersburg nukes and feels
very Western European I also found it to
be way more touristy to navigators
English as opposed to just Russian
languages spoken and written far more
widely than anywhere in Moscow so today
guys I’m going to share with you some of
the encounters that I’ve had in Moscow
and Siberia that I stopped me how the
most Russian people unsolicited
approached me on the streets and other
bus stations to offer helps with getting
around
of course bus stations can be daunting
though the sign ages and Roman is a
Cyrillic alphabet and most guidebooks
and maps have the station names written
in Roman characters at first I struggled
but never had difficulty receiving
assistance I remember in one occasion
seeing the look of puzzlement on my face
a gentleman stopped and despite his oats
in English took five minutes to point me
in the right direction the elderly lady
in the subway car who smiled at me party
this is artisan beseeching me to sit
down beside her the security guide at
the Emerald City who upon discovering
that I’m from Nigeria engaged me in an
animated discussion about his love for
my country because he once lived and
worked in Lagos the young man from the
era – shoe store who’d sank me for
visiting and studying in his country and
implored me to explore more of it
he also lamented on the fact that
Russians have a reputation all over the
world for being bad people the old man
from the same shoe store who came from
the other hand of the shop to tell me
which shoots to buy huh lady the black
ones betcha he said you need shoes to
run from Russian men so these are few
anecdotal examples that shows why I find
my experience in Russia to be extremely
pleasant overall in no way did I ever
feel myself discriminated because of my
race however please note that these are
my personal experiences and there are a
variety of factors which may or may not
have impacted on how I am being treated
and what are they
here’s why I should perhaps take my
assessments with a large grain of salt
I’m a black woman not a black man I
would be remiss not to acknowledge that
black men black women who travel are
less of a passive trait than black men
blame mass media who same el bent on
propagating the idea that black men are
dangerous imposing criminals second I’m
petite and non-threatening at 5 feet 8
and 55 kg I’m slim and I constitutes no
physical threat I’m also very smiley my
countenance whose’s per stiva see and
that puts most people at ease that I
spent 90% of my time in the company of a
white man my boyfriend is a Caucasian
and also a local who hails from Siberia
it would be reckless to not acknowledge
that the vast majority of the time in
his presence possibly shielded me from
untoward reaction but be aware of this I
make sure I spend most of my off to
exploring on my own and strangely enough
I found that people treated me way more
nicely when I verse by myself so is
Russia racist towards black people
should they travel here
my experience in Russia has been
extremely pleasant but there are so many
factors dictating this that it’s
difficult to provide a definite answer
those that would respond to halt the
architecture here stunning the history
and culture is immersive and the food is
divine however I would like to venture
into the main cities and explore
elsewhere after a Russia is to like to
it to depend just on marks : Siberia to
have an accurate understanding of what
it’s all about so I say to my fellow
explorers and black travelers go for it
and explore taking care of be always
taking care before him to be with
evidence an edict and information thank you
