Active listening | Miyu Kojima | TEDxYouth@Tokyo

let’s talk about me I mean a musician
and composer I’ve been doing so but I’m
not a professional and yet I have strong
opinions about music and how its
produced in how people listen to it so
I’m here to talk about one problem guys
today it’s the lack of diversity popular
the problem isn’t that music that’s
popular is awkward that’s not the
problem the problem is that overshadows
those that make the rest part that’s not
pretty obvious but the thing is there’s
a lack of diversity because there’s
overshadowing there’s so many artists
out there that want to make different
kinds of music different kind of
creative ideas but they’re unable to
because of monetary means so I’m here
but let’s first understand what is the
diversity diversity art is always
important we want something new
something fresh new ideas we don’t want
it to become scale so let’s look at what
specifically better is amazing music
it’s brown dirty bad something obvious
again but what this means here is music
that’s new so you sound through the
instruments you techniques new styles
we’ve stuff that is new artists too and
in these way to get music next data
verse now inherently from their own
perspective from your
country you’re gonna have diverse music
at your fingertips about the internet
number becomes
globalize because music outside your own
countries and naturally divers because
and every country music is to develop in
different ways and into unique ways such
that so how do actually promote
diversity
I’m speaking from the perspective of
musicians here the listeners well I’m
sure their budget was other musicians
out there too but from the listener
there’s actually a simple way active
listen now it sounds kind of lame I did
put active improbable we always do
everything on my way but there’s a
reason like that they have within their
see a lot of the time we’ve listening to
music in the background we do it while
doing a homework or running or
exercising or anything really
instead of doing that just listen don’t
do anything else see now here’s where
the important part starts when you’re
sitting there listening look for what
you like about it
look for the techniques look for the
instruments look for the individual
sounds for example water drops have been
using music reason it’s really cool but
no one has done it for quite a while so
listen to these individual techniques
that you like keep them in your head and
then explored it to remember those and
then flip them into that youtube search
bar so you like you like that Johnny’s
like the plucky thing in Jeff
it’s on set and you also like this
sub-genre of electronic medical tape
which I so just type in shamisen
woodshop into YouTube and I can
guarantee you’ll get at least five at
least five pieces that’ll sound like
that that’s one simple way to do it but
also remember that you know at the
advent of proven technology we also have
services like Apple music and spotify
that actually give you recommend a
artist so it’s becoming more a lot
easier but try to do it without using
these servers trying to look for what we
specifically like do you do this
you see what do you do this these
techniques that these composers use
there aren’t many other pieces – they’re
not individual so when you actively seek
for them you’re going to be promoting
those they actually use that technique
so you can be promoting Japanese music
do something today even though there
wasn’t a Japanese person
similarly if you’ve used a music and
then you like the specific are you safe
– music producers can be promoting its
culture as well music so but again I
mentioned this that I’m talking from
center to the perspective of the
composer now let me show you that indeed
composers use these techniques because
otherwise this active listening concept
won’t even work so there’s a lot of my
own pieces I have been working on this
it’s not done and some like your
stereotypical track music electronic
music companies
[Music]
that’s just the drop okay so the love
energy let me just sold out a specific
part of that I’m just a little out two
instruments there now that might sound
really strange to you those are in fact
they might sound like weird event I like
quad sir something’s you might find in
the kitchen in fact they are see how
does it help I was inspired to do this
kind of thing through active listening I
was listening to her immediately
that’s to steal their idea is that not
the fact that they used to sit down but
the sound better me and how I realized
that you can make music out of an object
you find now I learned this before the
answer does allow you to please new
setting your famous youtubers that all
these kind of things so it was not like
a big mindful opening but I haven’t
found the time where I was in this kind
of recent development so I took this
idea of using any instrument and then I
went to the kitchen know who’s like you
know what’s cool in there I picked up
the frying pan because I’m a
percussionist I picked up the stick and
I was like oh I don’t sound and then I
sampled it and then I want to leave it
there bitch and that’s what you get that
goodness job and that’s not the only
part of being that that’s the same
second a lot of structure you see be
popular music these days I don’t
generalize too much but all of it is
relying on specific core progression
and cheese and all that kind of stuff
they along back a long time ago there
was this anyway it was do that did you
do that’s going how the size of that
structure and that lumen was in the
romantic view and that concept is called
chromaticism that’s using every single
milk in 12 total system musicians with
all the right hand side as kind of weird
but also he’s probably in organ music of
Tchaikovsky and I was specifically
inspired to do this from this
right in the doctors byline and that
specific moment kind of blew my mind I
was like wait you can do that I thought
this was in like I don’t know something
major alignment right well you can and
guess what I did it as a reaction sort
of against the modernized water
standardized kind of style that you have
so not me no it really do use these
techniques in modern music and as a
composer
I’m compelled to tell you that
please look look out for them you know
I’m also happy as anyone is for you to
listen to my but in the end we want our
music to be sort of appreciated and as
artists we need our audience so the next
time you’ve listened to something that
you like analyze why you would put the
headphones on close your eyes and listen
don’t do anything else
