A Sahel Ouvert: is it possible Development through culture in Africa? | Xavier Simonin | TEDxTorino

I am Sevilla Samana and my life is a mix
of two components I’m a French theatre
comedian since 25 years and I’m living
in Paris and I was raised in Africa in
Ivory Coast during the 70s
I have spent very long period with the
people in Africa that are living outside
big cities in the bush with villagers in
traditional villages where sustainable
development NGOs international funds are
very hard to maintain where the needs
are the most crucial I love my job
artists never care about black or white
cliches rich or poor gap male or female
empowerment gay or straight
discrimination in my artistic world what
people care about is creating together
by doing music plays dances or movies
certainly because of my childhood my
worry is how people live in Africa all
around Africa outside big cities you
might know that Dakar or Abidjan or
Lagos might be different big cities in
their process for development today but
just take a ride a hundred kilometers
outside those big cities and you will
find that the bush in Senegal or Nigeria
or Mozambique
looks everywhere the same everywhere the
same reality that is to say everywhere
the same poverty the same defeat and the
same pride from the people so what can
you do when you are sensitive on that
kind of subject because you live close
to those people 50% of your time but
you’ve got this incredible luck every
time to fly back to one of the
wealthiest country in the world France
Europe what can you do when you are an
actor or a dancer or a singer acting
dancing singing yeah for sure but this
is just not enough preserving the
culture involving the population in a
big project make the world hear the
voice from the bush of Africa where
penetration global warming migration
woman’s liberation h-i-v pallid ISM
poverty are really big issues these were
our goals so in 2010 very deep in the
bush 550 kilometers from Dakar with a
small village named boomba in a very
beautiful area along the river Senegal a
group of local artists and me started to
put things in motion and we decided to
create an artistic movement of
development through culture and to show
our work roughly every two years by
Senegal setting up a cultural event
called a festival a sail over
to have the media on our side so deep in
the bush we involve the most famous
African stars as ambassadors with the
Stars come the media and with the
Mediacom the sponsors that make our
engine works but hold on a minute I just
want you now to feel a little the
atmosphere of what you can experience
during the festival aside over

so the the festival shows how many money
can flow with culture even in the bush
so it should be possible all around
Africa I just give you an example at the
very first year in 2010 our local
theater company made a play wrote a play
about HIV and as a matter of fact one of
our partners world wild famous NGO
called médicos del mundo was in charge
of HIV testing in Senegal that here and
the NGO hired those young actors and
paid them more than the actors of the
National Theatre in Dakar so that was a
success economy rules but the festival
mainly showed that every kind of job is
necessary in this project not only
artists or technicians but also on
project leaders communication advisors
webmasters cattle engineers
all those vocations are taken very
seriously by us and we do our best to
lead the people to study all year long
in the field of competence they want to
evolve to improve their own lives so we
asked ourselves
how can we sustain this development
through culture how could we support
beyond artistic talents in Africa then
we had this amazing idea I think open
the very first art academy in Africa in
the bush just imagine that with me young
talents supported in their own
environment without need to leave their
families art courses totally linked to
school courses the festival as I aver
could create international connections
and opportunities so talents are ready
to enter international universities or
internships think about how great it
could be to access worldwide songs or
plays or movies created in the bush
think about all the jobs that make the
cultural economy words digital
technologies are there and make them
feel that we are living next door
solutions exist migration is no longer
an option in boomba after seven years
leading this project what we have to
follow now it is incredible development
we created don’t you think that this
would be a much better connected
enriched and developed world through
culture because culture and arts should
always be in the very first line all
over the world for people people who
wants to live together this is basically
what I have learned after all these
years in the bush and we should be aware
in our countries of this treasure if
like gold hunters we could reveal gold
by mixing it with other clear spirits
together we stand
thank you for your attention
