let’s talk about rules because there’s
gonna be three rules today the first one
I promise to tell the truth the second
you have to answer a question for me
once this talk is finished and the last
one they told me I can’t move from this
red circle rules are kind of a funny
thing if you think about it we have the
universal rules these rules are tied to
some form of universal truth these rules
have meaning beyond what we can even
understand for example this reality as
you see it everything you see runs on
the rule of compassion we have other
types of rules these rules are designed
to help society function they improve
society they may seem silly in some ways
but they do good things like don’t
pollute the air or the water or the
earth and then we have other types of
rules these rules are arbitrary these
rules have the ability to be changed
these rules and can be as simple as
don’t speed and sometimes I’ve been
known to speed or they can be a little
bit more sinister designed to keep
people down to keep them away from
something to give somebody some false
sense of superiority over someone else
so let’s talk about the rule for you at
the end of this talk you’re gonna have
to answer the question what if he’s
right because that’s gonna have a
profound impact on what you do next you
know as I was preparing for this talk I
had written this nice speech and
I woke up and I said this isn’t right it
seems that no matter what we do in this
day and age it’s hard to verify if
something or someone is actually telling
the truth
so instead today I’m going to pledge to
tell the truth rule number one one of
the first things I’m going to tell you
is that I’m not alone here you may not
see it yet but I stand here with an army
with everyone who I’ve met my family my
friends sometimes people that have
wronged me I stand here with all the
people that have shared wisdom with me
and today I’m going to share that wisdom
with you I want to talk about something
about where we’re headed today I’m going
to talk about a very dark future it’s my
job to look and spot trends and see
patterns and what I see right now is an
incredibly dark future future where we
have hyper nationalism where we have
scarcity or we have the destruction of
the planet if you don’t believe me just
turn on the news look at what’s
happening this is true and there’s a
difference between truth and fact I may
get some of the facts wrong but my truth
will be right that seems kind of strange
but as a comedian once said comedians or
politicians use the truth to tell a lie
I would have placed truth here with fact
whereas comedians use a lie to tell the
truth
facts can change but truth doesn’t if we
look around at what’s happening we see
destruction on every part of the globe
we see right now 60 million refugees
that have
no home that have no way to fend for
themselves and most of us have no
compassion for this can you imagine that
or let me give you something else
imagine the future in 10 years imagine
waking up except you are entirely alone
you have no home
you have no possessions you have nothing
and you have to get up and run for your
entire life you’re running and no matter
where you go people turn you back call
you names or worse the only difference
between this future and right now is
what you see in the mirror we face a
challenge that we’re gonna have it a
hundredfold problem in the next 10 to 15
years we’re looking at over 600 million
refugees moving across the planet and if
you look and hear what people have said
with 60s what do you think is going to
happen this is a frightening outcome
this outcome bothered me
I was completely disturbed I didn’t know
what to do and when I was writing this
talk I said you know what I have a lot
of facts here that are right I have
demographic data
I have scientific data I have a lot of
information but there’s a funny thing
about facts that sometimes the things
that we think we know are not always
true and I recall a friend of mine who
said
this is the best time to be alive
because right now more than ever we can
see what’s right and what’s wrong more
clear than at any other time in history
in fact this time is so good that we
have the ability to talk to anyone on
the planet and that everything that’s
happening is just a symptom of us trying
to create a planetary society a society
where we don’t view each other by gender
by race religion or who we love this is
a new future I bring people here I
thought I would tell some of their
stories because I’m not sure that what I
say as an individual actually matters we
live in a time of fake news and when we
live in a time of fake news it’s
impossible to tell what is true or what
someone is saying is true so you’re
gonna have to decide that but I want to
let you decide that with some informed
consent so I brought today my mother so
I love very much well I forgive for
anything and here’s a wonderful human
and who taught me that when the sky is
too big you fill it with the dreams I
brought today my daughter who looked up
to me one day and said you know
something you’re not really that big and
I said you’re right honey
because sometimes having a different
lens and having the right lens is more
important than your title your status
your position having the ability to see
something clearer than anyone else has
more impact you know I’ve lived all over
the world and one of the most memorable
things
but I’ve read was from a restaurant tour
in Hong Kong who said food is the most
basic language of love this happened
almost 10 years ago more than 10 years
ago and I’ve never forgotten this
because of how simple and powerful this
lens is it teaches you so much about how
we should take care of each other what
we should do are we feeding people in
need do we make that important
I brought some other friends today I
brought my father so it gives me the
great advice everything in moderation
including moderation today we face
incredible challenges we face challenges
that if I’m honest and I’ve promised
that I’d tell the truth today I don’t
know if we can solve them I don’t know
if it’s possible we have done horrible
things to each other
we’ve done horrible things to this
planet and I’m here today to remind you
I’m here today to remind you of your
duty as a caretaker of your role to take
care of people and the planet and your
family and that in your community and
that extends beyond where you are today
that extends around the world I’m here
to warn you of what will happen and I
can guarantee you that if we fail to do
this if we fail to remember this there
will be a permanent night on this planet
we have something happening right now on
this planet where people are debating
the use of weapons that have the
potential to kill everyone on earth we
have war right now that appears to be
unending when we have environmental
destruction and fires that are literally
burning on almost every continent so
what are we gonna do well
I told this sad story to a friend of
mine and he said I’m not worried and I
said are you kidding me man have you not
been paying attention he goes I’m not
worried and I said why he said because
we have 7 billion units of the most
easily upgradable technology on the
planet we can solve these problems but
for sure if we want to solve these
problems if we want to go to Mars if we
want to colonize our solar system and go
beyond this planet and take care of this
planet
we don’t need 500 people working on this
problem we need 5 billion we need people
to learn to work together so how do we
do this well there’s a few simple things
that I think we can do but let me tell
you why we should do it my why I travel
all over the world I work I’m away from
my children my family likeness
incredibly but I do this because it’s my
duty I do this because I have
information I do this because I’m
available and able to solve complex
problems and we need more people to do
this if we want to do this to do this to
really create a new future we need to
work together the first step is we
should eat together if food is the most
basic language of love how do we sit
down and have a conversation over food
how do we eat each other’s food how do
we experience each other’s culture how
do we learn from each other how do we
listen to each other not just hear what
someone is saying but really listen how
do we listen to their truth
that’s the second thing we can do we
should all teach it doesn’t matter what
you teach as long as you’re teaching
your truth as long as you’re teaching
what you know is true it doesn’t matter
where you teach it whether you’re in the
university it doesn’t matter if you’re
teaching children the elderly people
with special needs it does not matter as
long as you’re prepared to teach you
will change the world there’s a Dutch
saying that knowledge is the only thing
when divided multiplies the last thing
follow some rules but be willing to
break them when you break rules that
stripped dignity from someone when you
break rules that don’t make sense you’re
building a new future you’re creating
something new the idea of innovation
given a long enough time horizon is a
social cause it’s an imperative to
disrupt the status quo the silly rules
that are set up by institutions and do
something new so I said that this
reality runs on a fundamental rule of
compassion and I’ll tell you something
that’s absolutely fantastic about
innovation they seem they may seem
unrelated
but in the mind they’re not when you are
confused for a long enough period of
time this becomes a proceeding condition
for the Eureka moment and at that moment
of Eureka a gamma wave in your brain is
produced literally a photon is produced
and released and what they’ve observed
in the brain is that when experienced
meditators meditate on compassion the
same gamma wave state is evident there
is an inherent link to solving complex
problems creating a new future and being
compassionate and before I break a rule
today by walking off this stage I would
like to wish you good luck in this
challenge now I’d like to tell you that
where you go I’m gonna stand with you
and your army and I’m gonna end with the
story of what my oldest son says when he
says it’s time to cheers he said I said
son what should we cheers to and he said
to victory thank you very much
