it’s 2014 and I’m driving to the
children farm with my little nephew tine
he’s five years old
and he’s asking questions a lot of
questions well I’m looking for a parking
space and trying to focus on all the
children children around the car he asks
me uncle news what kind of work do you
do that sounds like a simple question
what kind of work I do of course I know
what kind of work I do and how I should
explain it I’m a consultant
I sort of consult normally outwards like
strategic mission vision consultancy and
other management terms but that was of
course not the answer I was going to
give him how could I explain to a
five-year-old what kind of work I do
later that day but also later that week
I was thinking about this question quite
a lot and I realized how powerful this
question was now three years later I’m
still using the lesson learned that day
every every day in my job I tell
entrepreneurs and the first time that I
meet them I ask them what does your
company do and why does it matter and
explain it to me like I’m a
five-year-old the difficulty that people
are having with answering that questions
question makes my presence at that time
obvious to think about this how many
times does somebody ask you a difficult
or even a simple question but you just
sort of let it slide because you’re busy
or trying to look busy or think you are
guess what it’s not about the questions
and it’s not about the answers but those
are all opportunities to learn because
we can learn everywhere and anytime go
to Google and see for yourself
apparently people are learning from
living on a nuclear submarine or even
with a nuclear or with a Navy SEAL
those are all opportunities to learn and
they are sharing them my own learning
challenge when we look back at the
learning challenge with my little nephew
it was very simple but looking at my
education path I never really learned
how to process these kind of learnings
experience the right way and looking
ahead at the future of my education it’s
all about lifelong learning everybody is
convinced that lifelong learning is the
key to be and to stay successful I’m not
that convinced because the concept of
lifelong learning is it new and we
aren’t doing much better than for
example eight years ago yes we’re doing
better than average EU countries but if
you look at all the time money and
energy we invest in it we’re having
really troubles with low fly learning
learning at our workplace nevertheless
we are learning at our workplace if you
look at the spent and the learning
affects most of our budget goes to
formal learning but the effects of
informal learning are way higher
so the informal learning is a really
learning machine at our workplace but
guess what learning doesn’t stop at your
workplace or in a classroom or in a
school with informal learning there are
no boundaries your home the neighborhood
Park the community the whole world can
be a classroom or even when you go on a
field trip to the children farm with
your little nephew but like I said we’re
having some challenges with a lifelong
learning concept and that’s because it’s
based another traditional educational
system where we have a lot of focus on a
formal side of learning and it’s way too
much institutionalized second it’s all
about finance and about responsibility
and then a discussion about both thirds
it’s all about the transfer of science
and of knowledge but it may
what if what if learning is a natural
way of living and isn’t forced the time
or location
what if learning is always made to
measure for you as an individual on your
own pace and match with your own style
of learning what if learning is just
about the ability to be adaptive maybe
sounds unattainable but I’m convinced
it’s not we need to grasp the
opportunities two more forms of informal
learning the concept of a life Lafleur
nning like I said it’s more natural way
of learning it’s based on the learning
as individual and it’s about the ability
to be adaptive the power of the concept
of a lifelong learning is that people
are prepared for what’s next whatever
next be or even look like to achieve
that it’s important that we learn to
learn we really need to be conscience of
a learning process like I told you
before in my own education I never
really learned the informal learning
experience today I would like to talk
about the concept with four steps that
are very important to be conscious about
your own learning process and can be
very very helpful with that the first is
the experience experience itself it’s
very important to really know what
happens or happened and really analyze
and describing the experience itself the
second step is the unpacking the second
step about unpacking is really thinking
about really analyzing what happens
during the experience we can unpack by
keeping a journal by draw by paint by
creating something we create order and
crystallize the really lessons that we
have learned the third it’s all about
reflect it’s about sharing discussing
and talking with others what we have
learned it’s just like grew set talk to
anybody today and share
with them the fourth step is application
this is where sort of the magic happens
this is where we need to transfer our
learned skills our learned knowledge to
other situation it’s the same like I did
with the lesson that I learned from a
nephew is that I’m now using it as a
strategic consultant in my job we can
learn everywhere at any time at any
moment what’s our role you need to be
the educators on how to learn because if
we can prepare people for what’s next
then we can learn everywhere we can
really learn everywhere anytime from
anything our society in our society we
need to adapt our skills faster than
ever
also our knowledge and only formal ways
of learning make sure that we’re not
going to get there so we need to take
more informal ways of learning in my
opinion if we’re able to facilitate
people with the right set of skills to
really learn we will create enormous
adaptive power I’m convinced that more
forms of informal learning outside but
also inside our educational system is a
good base for people to create these
capabilities a life lift Learning Ally
flip learning is just a step beyond the
concept of lifelong learning and we can
learn everywhere and anytime and I
challenge you to take this concept and
apply it anywhere at anytime because you
can apply it everywhere and anytime even
tomorrow in the classroom
this is what normally happens you’ve
heard me talk I’m the first of the day
many more welcome
and hopefully reminder the line or two
during coffee break but that’s not what
real learning is both learning is not
about remembering what we have
experienced but is really finding out
the meaning of the experience that’s why
I challenge you today somewhere today to
briefly think about and process one of
the experiences you had today before all
the whole program started those four
steps like I discussed and we described
you can find it in the app or on the
website and I challenge you to really
consciously and briefly go through those
four steps today because the most
important skill people can learn is how
to learn you comply that anywhere and
anytime thank you for your trust and for
your attention and they will hope you
have a valuable learnings during this
day thank you
