We live in an age that appreciates so much extraordinary life – a life that most of us will not be able to live
Our talents have enormous wealth, they appear on giant screens
They have unique talents and skills. Their achievements are fantastic and many are alike, but in the background is unsatisfactory.
Late in 1650, Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer painted
Draw a picture called the little street. A small act but had a revolutionary effect,
With an impact that defies our values to this day.
There was nothing like that, just the appearance of a normal street in his village of Delft
An old woman sewing; children playing on the sidewalk, a busy woman in the garden.
It is one of the greatest paintings in the world. Up to this point, the greatest
Cultural works increased the advantages and value of aristocratic, military and religious life
Life is full of extraordinary moments and features moments and benefits.
The great epic poets, Homer and Virgil, wrote about heroic warriors. Renaissance artists have produced a wonderful image
About the saints and the angels. And the routine of kings, queens and aristocrats where they have always been
They celebrate and become an interesting place in the most beautiful paintings, but Johannes Vermeer
He went in another direction. He wanted to show us what could be charming and honorable
About very different types of activities: taking care of the garden, babysitting, sewing
Or as in his painting which was as important to a kitchen maid preparing lunch.
Many contemporary Dutch youth joined the quiet Vermeer revolution. one of them,
Peter Dijoach, focused on random moments of everyday life, when nothing special happens
I have painted a picture of a home for an affordable dealer
The thing that intrigued him was the laundry basket and how the owner of the house
Helping him bend and arrange towels and bed sheets. This, Dichoe
He tries to tell us, that this is the meaning of life, well understood.
Another one of Vermeer’s followers, Casper Nature, is a fan of people doing jobs that are often considered
Dull and modest: like making lace, which was tired and well-driven.
Nature could not change what people were earning, but he was determined to change the way it was possible
We feel about those who earn modest salaries.
Although these artists are famous and their works are at the greatest showrooms and have the highest prices if offered at an auction
Their shy revolution did not work that way.
Today – in the modern version of epics, aristocracy, sacred art – the ads and films are constantly explaining to us
The importance of things like sports cars, tropical island holidays, fame, first class air travel
And the lavish limestone kitchen. The attraction of this stuff is often real.
But its combative effect is to instill the idea that the beautiful life is described about these things that most people can not buy.
The conclusion we quickly realize is that our lives have no value.
Vermeer, for his part, insisted that ordinary life was heroic in its own way,
Because things that look ordinary are so far from easy. There is tremendous skill
And the real nobility involved in raising a child to be a young independent and balanced;
In maintaining a good relationship with the partner over many years despite the difficult moments;
In keeping the house tidy;
At work in a boring or well paid job responsibly and enjoy
To listen well to someone else, and generally not to succumb to madness and anger at contradictions and compromises that are involved in your being alive.
Vermeer did not claim that everything normal is always interesting.
He was trying to guide us by grace to the idea that there are a bunch of things that are
We often ignore it and it happens to be normal and beautiful at the same time.
With this extraordinary talent, Vermeer convinced us of an idea that we must hold firmly against
The pressures are enormous in the imagination that we must be somewhere else and live in a very different way
But there is already much to appreciate and honor in our lives when we learn to see them without
Intolerance or self-hatred.
