The ancient Greek sages have asserted that philosophy is not just
Abstract theories separate from reality
They have realized that they are also applications, actions and skills that are very useful to humans
And that everyone should learn and practice since childhood
To help us to live and die well and achieve happiness
And Plato was more than certain of this.
So he was very enthusiastic in defending her
As a kind of spiritual therapy.
And one of the strongest stories he said about the usefulness of philosophy
Which became known as “the cave”
Perhaps it was one of the most famous stories of philosophy
The purpose of this story, as he wrote,
To compare “the impact of education and its lack on our human nature”.
At the beginning of the 7th book of his remarkable book, The Republic,
Plato tells us the story of people imprisoned or raised in a cave
They have lived there long since their inception and know nothing about the outside world.
There is no natural light in this cave, and the walls have always been damp and dark
And all that these people could see was only what came from the shadows of things thrown on the wall reflected from the light of fire
The inhabitants of the cave enjoyed these ideas about animals and plants and people and embraced them
Moreover, they believe that these shadows are real and that if you are doing a lot of attention to them
You can succeed in your life
But they were not aware that they were looking at the ghosts of things only and not for what they were
Yo were talking about these mysterious things among themselves with great enthusiasm
They are very proud of their development and wisdom
Then one day, simply and by accident, someone discovered a way out of the cave
To the open air
At first, I was simply dazzled by the new world I found. I was impressed by the brilliant sunshine
Where everything, for the first time, was going the right way
Gradually he caught his eyes and realized the ideal pattern of things
For all those things he had previously known only as shadows
See the actual flowers, enjoy the colors of the birds, and the nuances in the bark of the trees
Observe the stars and grasp the extent and breadth of the universe
As Plato put it in the term “glorious”: the old man was seen as a ghost, and now he has seen the true nature of things.
Far from being discriminated against, this man was recently enlightened
Then this enlightened man decided to leave the sunny upper world and return to the cave
In an attempt to help his comrades who are still drowning in confusion, error and ignorance
Because he is accustomed to the bright upper world, it has become hard for him to see anything underground
Stumble along the wet lanes and walk the road more than once
For others, those who did not leave the cave have become a completely ignorant man who knows nothing
When he began to mingle with them, he insisted on explaining what the sun was
Or what is the truth of trees? And all the other things he saw
The cave residents initially ridiculed him, ignored him, and eventually got angry at him and plotted to kill him
The story of the cave is a symbol of the lives of all enlightened people with others
The cave dwellers are all human beings who have no knowledge of philosophy and religion (non-enlightened)
The sun is the light of reason
The disintegration of the returning philosopher and the belief of the people that he is apostate and must be killed is all that should be expected of the truth
When they take their knowledge with them and return to people who can not think
For Plato, we all live a large part of our lives in the shadows
And many of the things we are passionate about, such as celebrity, perfect partner, excellent position, high-paying job, are all shades and illusions
And we generally do much less than what we think we know
They are mostly ghosts that dominate a large part of our expected culture and are painted on the walls of our fragile and defective minds
But because everyone around us insists it is real
We are taken in from an early age
It is not a personal or individual fault
No one chose to be born by the cave
But this is where we started from
We all started from a difficult place
If, like what happened to the man in Plato’s story, if you are talking frankly to people they are wrong
You will not go anywhere, you may cause deep abuse to someone and can threaten your own life
Athens, after all, has recently introduced Socrates, the esteemed teacher and friend of Plato, to death
Plato knew from experience only what the cave dwellers might do to those who claim to know the sun
The solution, Plato says, is that the process of philosophical education is managed very carefully and widely
Where he understood the method of inquiry that Socrates pioneered, which we define as “the Socrates method
It’s a very nice process. You do not lecture or have to force anyone to read a particular book
You just start with a general declaration of intellectual modesty and tell people that no one knows much
It is always good to insist that “wisdom begins after we have ignorance”
I admit that you do not know exactly what the government should do, what the purpose of the war is, what endeavor you want to achieve or how to make good relations at work
Then ask the other person to say what he thinks and gradually together you can get answers
Probably the other person will be confident or rather full of self-confidence
You may tell all the facts very simply really, everyone will know the answer in advance
You must be patient with this type of education
If people leave the main topic, you can simply return them to them
You must take a lot of time and be prepared to hold talks over several days
This method of speech is based on the beautiful trust and encouragement of others
People can eventually work out things for themselves and detect errors with their own reasons
If they draw their attention carefully and quietly to the difficult points and things they did not pay attention to
Do not blame or get upset by anything
You do not have to teach anyone or anything by making them feel stupid
Even if it is
Initially
We all started from the cave
But from Plato’s deepest insight we must not stay there.
The way out of this cave is, simply, called philosophy
This is the sun that we must follow its light and radiate.
And from which we can see the nature of things clearly
