Franz Kafka was a great Czech writer who managed to break into one
sphere of human emotions, which we can call it ‘Kafkaesk’ and thanks to him
we are able to get to know it better, to have a new perspective
and be released. The Skull World is not pleasant. Often it looks like a nightmare.
Yet it is a place where many of us, though for a short time,
we will end up in dark times throughout life.
In the world of Skull we feel helpless in the face
authority, judges, aristocrats, industrialists, politicians, and above all:
fathers. Where we feel that fate is out of control,
when we are oppressed, humiliated and derided by society and especially by our families.
We are in the orphan of the Skull when we are ashamed of our bodies, of our sexual impetus
and we feel that the best thing for us
is to be killed or punished without mercy
as if we were some disgusting insects. Franz Kafka was born
in Prague in 1883. He was the great son of a father who was terribly abusive in psychological terms
and a mother who was too weak to protect her son from father abuses
as he should do.
The skull grew fearful, fond of books, wise and very hateful to herself.
He wanted to become a writer, but he was unacceptable to him.
Thus, one of the greatest German literary geniuses after Goethe
was forced to spend his life working a number of jobs below his level:
in law offices and later in insurance companies.
He had some failed connections with women, failed to marry or build families and was tortured by
sexual stimuli, forcing them to end up in brothels and pornography.
Kafka published very little work as it was alive: only three summaries
with short stories including the most famous work, ‘Metamorphosis’
He was totally hidden and unfamiliar.
His giant reputation after death is based on three novels: ‘The Process, the Critics’ and ‘America’.
All were unfinished because Kafka was very disappointed with them.
He ordered them to be destroyed after his death.
Fortunately for Humanity they were preserved.
It would not be excessive or offensive if we suggest that one of the key keys to understanding the skull
we find it in his report with his father. Kafka never wrote directly
for this man in any of his own works but the psychology of the novel is straightforward
related to the dynamics of the events that he lived
as the infamous son of Hermann Kafka.
Every boy who has always felt shaded or unwanted by a powerful father
I will understand the feeling of Kafka during his childhood. In November 1919, at age 36, five years
before dying, Kafka wrote a 47-page long paper for Herman in which
he tried to explain how his childhood had distorted him. Like many victims of abuse
Skull never distracted hope that one day she would be asked for forgiveness by the person
which had caused so much injustice.
“Dear dad,” the letter continues. “The case recently brought you to ask me
why I’m afraid of you. As usual, I did not know how to answer
and this, as on the one hand, I’m afraid of you, and in turn, because
to find the reason for this fear I would have to go into detail
which I would not remember during the conversation.
The adult skull, humiliated itself in the face of the father. “All I needed was a bit of encouragement
a little company, but I was not fit for it. For me it was elusive
total absence of your feelings, suffering and shame
which you have caused me through your words and judgments. It seemed like you were not
aware of your power. “Skull emphasized a concrete incident
when as a young child he asked for a glass of water and his horrible father
pulled the boy out of bed and flung it on the balcony
and left him freezing in the cold, wearing only the clothes of sleep. Kafka writes: “I was very wise
after this event but it caused me a lot
irreparable damage. For many years after, I was frightened
that the giant man, my dad, the absoul authority, would come
for no reason and to throw me away
on the balcony and that meant I was nothing for her. “
Boys need support from their father to become men, and Herman Kafka does not
gave this opportunity to Franz. “At a very young age, you stopped me talking. Your threat
that I should say anything that was not necessary, and the raised hand, followed me
constantly. “Franz’s weakness was obvious.” I was burdened by the presence
your physical. I remember changing our clothes in the same room.
I was dry, weak, small. While you were strong, tall, broad.
I felt like a dismal monster. When we walked together, you took me by the hand
as a small, insecure skeleton, fearful of water
and unable to imitate your swimming mode. I was filled with despair.
It could not be worse, but here it was. The skull ended the letter and gave it
mother Julie, to give it to Herman. But weak and scared as it was she did not give.
He kept it for a few days and returned to Franz advising him
that it would be better for her busy husband and worker not to read in such a thing.
The miserable boy did not dare to try again.
In “Judgment,” a short story written in 1912, a bourgeois named Georg, plans to marry.
He lives in a flat with his widow. He gets ready to leave the house
while the father is old and weak. Georg puts him in bed but suddenly in the way
mysterious, the father gains power, leaps over Georg and accuses him
that has betrayed everyone: the society, the father, and the memory of the mother.
Georgi barely opposes. In conclusion, the father condemns Georg to death
with inhalation. Georgie respects and hurries to be thrown to the nearby river.
Father roared aloud: “You were an innocent kid,
but in your heart you were a wicked and diabolical being. “
The idea of cruel and arbitrary judgment was constantly present in the work of Skull:
it re-emerges in the unfinished work “The Process”, written two years later.
But now Kafka replaced the father’s figure, with a large courtroom:
with judges, lawyers, guards, and prolonged bureaucratic procedures. When Joseph K
was arrested on the morning of his 30th birthday, he was not charged with charges.
He hardly tries to understand why. Feeling guilty from the inside thinks he deserves to be punished.
He tries to declare innocent, without realizing the reasons for the charge and employing a lawyer.
But the court gradually changes it. He loses his ability to think.
The words left in the mud, he does not even work properly and is defeated by the game of politics.
Finally, one year after the arrest, two employees with a grotesque look
go to Joseph’s apartment. They take it and send it to the suburbs of the city
and kill him by stuck the knife in the heart.
Between “Judgment” and “Process”, Kafka writes “Metamorphosis”.
A short story where the merchant agent, named Gregor Samsa, wakes up a morning insect
which resembles the beetle. This is a story of disgust to yourself, of family betrayal
and just like the “Process”, a story about the horrendous power of authority.
When Gregory drags on the floor, he is at risk of being imprisoned.
Gregory’s family understands that they can do it easily even without it. Keep them in the bedroom and throw garbage.
After a discussion the family thinks that
the insect located in the bedroom can not be Gregory. They begin to refer to the insect as well
insect and not as He (human being). They decide to remove the insect.
Gregory listens to her and decides to die quietly.
After Gregorian death, the family is a bit ashamed of their behavior, but only ‘a little’.
Skull suffered from illness throughout life. In 1924 when he was
41, is ill with tuberculosis, which caused her
great pain when nourished.
He wrote his latest story, titled “The Hungry Artist”. History is shown here
of a public performer who survives fasting to please the public
Once he managed to fast for 40 days.
But over time the audience began to get bored of his job. As much as he did, he did not impress you anymore.
He is placed in a crazy trunk and is terribly weakened. Before I die
he wants to pray and confess that he should never be admired
because the reason for fasting was because he could not taste any food.
Immediately after death, he was replaced with a panther.
A full-blooded animal that was worshiped by the crowd and did not drink it.
A few days after he completed the work of “The Artistic Wolf”, Kafka passed away and was buried
in Jewish vouchers in Prague. Several years after his death, he began to become famous.
In World War II, he was considered to be the greatest writer of the time.
His family died in gas chambers by Germans throughout the Holocaust.
It represents a monument in the history of German literature
and at the same time, it is the incarnation of our evil, shameful and fearsome side.
Kafka wrote: “The task of literature is to re-link us with feelings which though
are impossible to study, need our attention.
A book, he wrote, “should be like an ax for the frozen sea within us.”
His books are the most tangible, frightening, and most original axes ever written.
