How to Make an Attractive City

How to make attractive cities
Cities have great importance
In general, we all need to live in them
We must strive tirelessly
To improve their construction
There are a few cities that are okay
Very few .. Very thousands of cities are really beautiful cities
Shamefully, the most attractive cities Tamel to the foot
It is strange that we are better at making things now
Cars .. Aircraft .. or phones
Why Cities So?
It’s crazy to be satisfied with this
Leaving something of that importance to opportunity
We have to go scientific
We know the principles that define how a city can be beautiful or ugly
It’s not that we prefer some cities to others
This is a statement on how to build attractive cities?
There are six key things that any city needs to achieve
1. Not very messy … not very organized
One of the things we love in cities is the system
System means balance .. symmetry .. and repetition
It means that the same thing happens frequently
And that the left side matches the right side
The system is one of the reasons that a large number of people love Paris
But most other cities are a mess
When chaos prevails, there is no official
This is disturbing
It’s awful when everything is upset
A sloping roof next to a flat roof
Fund stark geometrically next to car parking garbled
High towers appear as if they were randomly placed as teeth in a mottled mouth
In general, we have an inner desire to evaluate things
When we can not, we are frustrated
This feeling is repeated when we look at cities
Mostly, we do not dislike skyscrapers in cities
But skyscrapers that fall without any planning
As we increasingly see in London
Unlike New York or Chicago, which show the organized style we love
But, we must take into account something else
Excessive system may be a problem
Excessive regularity may be devastating
Excessive regularity may feel numbness and strangeness
Can appear bleak .. hardened .. and cruel
So the ideal situation we are looking for is
Diversity and order
We find it in the main square of the city of Tlch in the Czech Republic
All houses are equal in width and height
But in the presence of this pattern, freedom is given by choice of form and color
Or on the island of Java in Amsterdam where the pattern is strict
All houses are equal in height and width and the color range is restricted
But during this network, each module is in itself
Making it a midpoint between chaos and boredom
That is what people are passionate about
This is what more cities must get
System and diversity
Consequently, as a general rule:
If the disorder becomes more unsatisfactory
And if the system becomes more boring
What we hope for is organized complexity
As you can see here
As here
Now, the other thing that makes the cities beautiful
They must have a visible life
There are dead streets and lively streets
All in all we tend to live streets
This is a neighborhood street in Hong Kong
This is a live scene in Venice
In the eighteenth century, painter Kanalito specialized in drawing cities that everyone loved because they were full of life
A lot of activities were happening
In this painting we see a courtyard of two stones
The shades of work are harsh but beautiful
It is amazing to see what people are doing
How they carried those huge blocks on the boats
The life of Medea is under display and we adapt to adore it
Compare this to a dead street of one of our contemporary cities
Today in places where most of the work looks dull and dead
It is scattered across a wide range of highways where it is only forced
Because there is nothing to see
Most office buildings are also hidden
The people inside may work on the most surprising things we do not know
This is confusing and unthinkable
So the street level is dead
Compare it with the streets we all love
Where you can see things happen
Bakery .. Scaffold .. Grocery that sells carpets .. Pub sells burgers .. Library
These streets we love because they are full of life
Increasingly in contemporary cities we have hidden life
We have a lot of huts and dead towers linked to dead roads where they barely communicate with other humans
Unlike the old alleys where you see people working
Communicate with them visually as they pass in front of you and feel connected with them
Modern planners have become obsessed with concealing technology
Instead of making them beautiful for the beholders
Today, we would be angry if we heard that a pipeline would be built over a beautiful river
We will be full of anger
But we reserve trips to see the Roman Gare bridge in southern France
That is because it is built for beauty and practicality
We think we hate the tube, but we really hate ugliness
So let us make sure our streets are full of life
Full of people doing things that can be seen through windows
This makes certain cities attractive for walking
Life shows up for all
People are proud of what they do and are happy to make the world notice and appreciate the practical part of things
A third principle of good cities is that they are integrated
In the past, your ability to be alone with your partner or family was a great achievement
They lacked the upper class, and the poor were united
It was a shame
Once people had enough money, they wanted to move abroad and own their own land
In the last decades of the twentieth century, the number of people who hid themselves in private spaces increased
That was disastrous
It has become fatal, free of consideration, boring, and very wasteful environment
A compact city like Barcelona consumes a fraction of the energy consumed by a sprawling city like Phoenix in Arizona
We have built a world that is not finished from the inert suburbs
Linked in broad and fruitless ways
All this is because we believe in the mistaken impression that we must be away from other people
But in fact it’s nice to have a balance that modifies the effect of living near others in a vertical range
That’s why we need highly integrated cities
Full of public spaces and spaces where we can assemble
All the beautiful cities are compact and contain yards
But the art of squares is horribly weak
We continue to market developments with mobile phones, but to see no one has built a good yard on the surface for decades
It is not a science to build rockets
Look at St. Maria’s Square in Rome
It is a public space, but it is intimate and close enough to make you feel like an extension of your home
You can relax here by drinking coffee or beer .. read the newspaper
Being around other people has a life-reactive effect unlike the closed space inside the house
There is art for good spaces
It should not be too big or too small
Any vacuum with a diameter greater than 30 meters is great
This means that the person becomes small compared to the surrounding vacuum
Giving a sense of isolation and loss
In the good arena you must be able to see the face of the person opposite you in the arena
You can, when needed, guide someone walking at the other end
The ideal arena should provide a sense of containment rather than indoor phobia
There is another principle for good cities dealing with guidance and ambiguity
Of course, the cities are big
But the cities you love a lot, also have back streets and small trails that feel intimate and allow you to lose
We are drawn to the sense of ambiguity and closure offered by these streets
It is actually nice to be lost in a simple way
The crowded streets feel intimate
In Serdejon or Colombia the balconies barely come into contact
You can see your neighbor eating breakfast
You know when they go to sleep
When their children do their duties on Sunday evening
The fact that everyone is under a microscope for a long time makes people more friendly
Do not dispute too much
They put roses on the table frequently
We like this, but we forget it
We do not know how to ask for this
Modern planners and developers give us high privacy because they think this is what we want
And because they insist that cars and trucks, which need larger spaces, are the most important things in the world
Of course we need to balance the small and large streets
Of importance, great cities
We love small streets but we become nightmares if we want to travel long distances
So it is ideal to get large avenues, wide and straight spaces, and also a network of small streets
We want cities that offer us two important benefits
Fun Mystery and Fun Guidance
Let’s think about the scale now
Contemporary cities are obsessed with big things
Joseph Campbell wrote:
“If you want to see what a community believes in, look at the purpose for which the largest buildings are on the horizon”
The largest and most dominant things tell us the real priorities that are not recognized in a society
We do not collectively admit that we glorify a company for sports shoes, tax official, oil companies, or pharmaceutical companies
Our cities in contrast tell another story
They are full of huge towers that are just for those things
This is a bit frustrating
As human beings we do not resist the bigness in size itself
We do not mind being humbled
As long as the things we bow down to deserve respect
As a beautiful mosque, a cathedral, or a museum
We have allowed our cities to hijack aggressive commercial targets
The towers do not show the Lord, or love, or humanity
All glorify pizza companies and financial investment companies
They emerged because we collectively made a fatal mistake
We have focused on who owns the land
But we do not think about who owns space
Who has the right heaven
It turns out that the one who has the right to heaven determines what you see from your window
We suggest that the ideal height for any piece within the city is five floors no more
What’s more, people feel small and unimportant
So we say, reduce the height of these towers and combine everything with five floors
Make it focused, compact, and convergent
As they do in some parts of Berlin, Amsterdam, London, and Paris those parts that we love
Of course from time to time there could be a huge building there
But let’s dedicate it to something really special
Something that all humanity can love
Horoscopes must be worthy of their dominance
They must be balanced with our best aspirations and our long-term needs
Finally, make it local
There are things that must be similar anywhere
We do not expect there to be a unique Venezuelan phone
Or a different Icelandic bike
But we do not want the buildings to be everywhere
It is very frustrating when you travel hours to a place to land and feel that you are in a place without identity
The problem is not that we want diversity for itself
Because of climate, history, and social traditions, each society has different needs, different strengths and weaknesses
There are different styles of happiness
Good and different ways to manage a group life
The similarity of cities is harmful
It shows where everyone must be associated with a specific identity for their own space
This is similar to wearing the same clothes in all seasons
Or speak the same way regardless of the receiver
Cities must have a strong personality
Linked to the use of unique local materials and forms
The pale stones in the southern part of the Mulberry arch in Glasgow are a local material with an average feel of a blond stone
Formed when the Scottish class approached the equator
Or around Campríg where the brick made of golden yellow clay is a traditional local material
Or consider how Glenn Mirekt found a way to reflect the distinct personality of Australian life
So the rule must be that you do not put in your city buildings that can come from anywhere
Find an architectural style that accurately reflects your location
Consequences of the construction of buildings is not economic
Together, we have enough money
We face two fundamental problems
First, intellectual confusion about beauty
The second is a lack of political resolve
The intellectual confusion is that we think that no one has the right to determine what is beautiful or ugly
Be concerned about who has the right to select
We think that beauty is a personal thing, not objective
On this basis no one has the right to urge him
It is understandable and understandable
But it is an effective way for greedy developers
It is a source of comfort for them when free from aesthetic principles
This means that they can escape by killing them for beauty
We may not agree very much about what the beautiful city represents
But we can recognize the ugly city when we see it
There is no vacation in Frankfurt, Maine or Birmingham at all
There are good reasons for this to do with a personal sense of beauty
So let us stop being dangerously relative
There are already beauty, as have Sydney, San Francisco, Barth and Bordox, unlike some other places
Facts are confirmed by tourist statistics
Let us stop saying that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”
This is a rich gift for the next fool who wants to tower ugly
The other obstacle is a lack of political resolve
We abandoned the urban design and gave it to the greedy rich
We have renounced democracy
We have faced and lost the battle between public right and business opportunities
There were always groups that could fight for ugly development
But we can say no
The beautiful cities emerged when governments set strict and ambitious laws
Keep developers greedy under evaluation
Look out at the magnificent new city of Edinburgh
Which has become apparent after the government has established clear laws to do the work of developers
They wrote precise legislation detailing the height of the buildings, the quality of the finishes, the presentation of the tiles, and the character of the sky line
This is the only way you get beauty
They did not leave it to market freedom, because if you do that you’ll get a mess
When governments abandon beauty, people begin to hate all buildings
We become collectively gloomy
We thought we were all buildings and we were not able to build beautiful places
We become obsessed with restoration work and are opposed to anything new
This is wrong because we need places where we live
Humanity has not built a single beautiful city since 1905
When the gun was built, no one regretted the boats swallowed by the sea
The purpose of construction must be to build things that do not make us regret the nature that has been lost
Because architecture is equal to the designs of nature
We can build beautiful cities but we must confront developers who seek opportunities and intellectual confusion
Governments can make beauty only if they have enough public support
Political resolve is ultimately what we elected
So we have done this film in the hope of alerting you as a citizen to help legislate beautiful cities for the future
These are the six laws and now is the time to fight for their application
