there was a fire in her belly uh-huh
there was a fire but can’t nobody afford
no fires in Detroit would you hear your
Detroiter
oh you got to do is just set up shop
I’ve been here for all these years and
you know what is this home I love
Detroit character Detroit is utilitarian
we’re resilient we’re tough if you drop
us in the middle of a desert
we’re gonna find the water
it’s like anybody you know when you’re
at home your home you know you know your
streets you know your people you know
everything it’s a town for me it’s not a
city
I didn’t start all them fires I’m just a
little girl I’m just a little brown girl
I’m just pigtails and palms and waiting
this was my story and I was gonna tell
it whether they wanted me to tell it or
not
I have lived in Detroit for 37 years now
and I have no plan to leave the city
Detroit’s always been interesting in a
sense that always there’s a sense of
Renaissance happening to the city I
lived in New York I lived in Chicago I
lived in Greece for five years I could
have done anywhere I want
I had job offers I didn’t take them I
didn’t take them because I really
thought this was a good place to be and
I’m gonna continue to be doing what I do
which I love
when I raise born and raised in Detroit
heart love I mean a person could lose
everything in this city but somebody
will have something kind to say I think
that’s something that will never leave
this city and that’s the love it’s gonna
be green you know no matter what it’s
gonna be green that’s what I feel I was
nine when I attempted to write my first
novel I don’t know if I’ve been nine
hours but I was nine and I wanted to
write one still write me still write
I’ve been here ever since 4 to 7 this is
coming back but they got a lot of lot of
work to do I don’t think I’d ever be
back it used to be is it going back to
my roots I sure would wanna go back to
Georgia you see this is the route right
here
everybody come to grande Richter and
greet greet your aunt I don’t know how
long I’ll be around but if I had to I
really don’t know where we’re gonna stay
Detroit is different people who are here
want to be here and want to make this
place better to stay here and to become
a part of it you have to be dedicated
it’s really inspiring to see even in
three years since I’ve been here not a
change that’s happened they say there
are ghosts in the house I was born in
running up and down the stairs maybe
they’re looking for the family that used
to fill it up checking for the pencil
markings on the walls a score how tall
we’ve grown and the birds that died the
dog that ran off sometimes maybe they
are just looking for the kids for to a
house minimum used to make this block no
thanks I’m from here so we moved here
and we just gone through struggles like
okay just a let’s do something there’s a
movement here there’s something going on
and we want to be a part of it
so let’s make our home here hopefully
this home would be Cory’s home the
youngest child and the next one in next
one we’re gonna this is where we’re
gonna start our generation I mean I’m
coming out right and fighting in the war
this is really nothing across with the
time that’s what I fought for it for me
to come home and build my dream home
here
sometimes those take to running I know I
did for 12 years I was gone like the
wind ghosts but the wind just moves in
circles smoke signals
they say picking up a dust and a husband
or two least I’m trying least I’m
writing somebody gotta tell them we are
not ghosts
you
