from the beginning we wanted to build
Angry Birds not for like a hundred days
but for a hundred years we do
entertainment we do education and then
we apply entrepreneurship to everything
we do we want to we want to change the
world
my name is Boyd I’m an addict
I’m addicted to Angry Birds I was
preparing for this talk I started last
week beginning to do the research and I
thought well I should start by playing
the game again I just put it down about
15 minutes ago and time to put on my
jacket and come down here so I didn’t
really have time to prepare any of the
material because I was too into the game
we’re gonna find out why I can’t get
past level 2 in just a moment we’re also
gonna find out why what I was doing was
actually scientific research when read
the lane physics professor explains the
science of Angry Birds but Peter vest
Ibaka my enabler and the chief marketing
officer for Rovio or on their panel
tonight gentlemen if you will come up we
will examine the phenomenon of Angry
Birds were you like me first of all how
many people have played the game alright
good there was a good chance a lot of
hands would go up 2 billion downloads
are they two billion so for the chief
marketing officer you should get a raise
yeah I think we’ve been doing ok but as
we always say it’s a good start you know
so 2 billion have it’s yeah it’s a start
but we we have of course much bigger
ambition so yeah why birds because if
you could think of angry snakes angry
Gators angry bears it would frighten you
but Angry Birds yeah yeah actually it
all started with Yahoo is also our our
gay
dishonor he has been drawing these kind
of weird characters for years and then
he was pitching a new game idea actually
the game that he was pitching nobody in
the team cannot really understood how
that would work but everybody
immediately fell in love with the board
characters and say that we have to build
a game around those boards and then in
the following eight months we did so the
nine rivers came out in in December 11th
of December 2009 and it’s almost four
years ago since storage and Langley Bush
came out so yeah it’s been meaner Wiles
and I so what’s the average shelf-life
of the game usually these disappearing
yeah let’s say that people get tired of
them yeah I don’t know if there’s like
an average shelf life but from the
beginning we wanted to build Angry Birds
not for like a hundred days but for a
hundred years so again really make
something that becomes a permanent part
of pop culture and that’s kind of how
we’ve been approaching Angry Birds not
as a game but as a brand as a franchise
and and then expanding to quite a few
other areas like animation and books as
well read Elaine who is a professor of
physics at Southeastern Louisiana
University and blogs for for Wired
there’s a Wired science blog you’re here
to show why this is not time wasted on
my part and part of the partnership with
National Geographic one of our books we
have a lot of books with Angry Birds you
wrote this when furious force is the
physics at play in the world’s most
popular game right so I’m doing science
when I’m playing this game oh yeah sure
sure
you are you really are doing science I
mean I don’t even know I’m learning
that’s the best kind yeah that’s the
best kind of science right it’s it’s the
same principles of science in Angry
Birds and you can take it to a much
deeper level and that’s that’s what I’d
like to do take it to our page in the
beginning of the book where you show
that well here it is right you show that
there are actually formulas for the way
the birds move sure the plain bird when
you shoot it it follows your basic
introductory physics projectile motion
type equations and it folds up really
well so it’s a great example for that
real world idea of projectile motion
Angry Birds does that so it’s a great
example to use in your introductory
courses
and an introductory to bring students
understand projectile motion for the two
or three people who may not have played
the game there’s a little sling shot at
the bottom here that shoots the birds
forward it targets to destroy them to
kill pigs that are sneaking their eggs
yeah kind of philosophy of the game
yes but the birds react according to
forces like gravity they change in this
case in some cases yes but not in all
cases in fact you have an example of
physics you put together a little video
right that shows what happens because
the birds don’t just fly once you let go
of the slingshot sometimes you can punch
the screen and change their behavior and
this is the rule of force and here’s an
example explain when you tap the screen
the blue bird splits into three so the
blue birds not realistic we already know
that but we want to try to figure out
how it works so you can do a little
experiment in the game in this case I
shoot the bird and hit that rock you can
see that the rock that gets hit and by
looking at the motion of the rock after
it gets hit it’s just a simple collision
problem you can look at Momentum’s you
can look at velocities and everything
and then what you can do is to shoot the
bird splitting into three and collide it
and then not splitting it into three and
you find that the rock behaves
differently whether you split it into
three or not which you probably thought
would be different but the results are a
little surprising and that is that this
the smaller pieces of rock go at a
greater force than the big rock but the
smaller this is violating the laws of
physics right well it’s Angry Birds
rules we don’t have so it’s as his rules
and I’m just trying to figure out the
rules so and you didn’t call them up and
ask us but measurements yeah that
wouldn’t be fun to ask on the game and
you have your students doing this yeah
yeah they do stuff like that yeah so you
can take a video just like this and and
I use something called video analysis
where you look at the object in each
frame and you get position time data
from that and you can you can do all
sorts of great things and does this make
your students do you think it inspires
them more to do their homework does it
make them more interested in doing the
physics problem if you put it in a game
form what the whole whole point of
is when you get to that point where you
don’t you don’t do it for some external
reward like a grade you do it because
you want to know what the answer is and
that’s what I do and and when I show
them things like this some students just
do it to finish the task but there’s
some that that get infected and they
won’t find out other things in the game
and and oops I just made another
scientist so but you’re taking the
concept that we’ve described in this
book later and trying to incorporate it
into educational programs around the
world yeah it’s not just a National
Geographic book for those who goes into
school systems absolutely and that’s
something that we’ve been working on for
the last two and a half years it’s
actually making learning fun and not
only through games but like through
books learning environments and all of
that and then really looking at how we
can make learning fun I always use the
example from comment back home of what
we mean with fun learning that boys in
Finland speak better English than girls
and do you know why because they play
more games and the games are in English
so it’s not like the boys set out to
cannot speak better English but they end
up that way because they play more games
so I think that’s something that has to
think about that when they do new levels
because some people are beyond me and
beyond the second level of Angry Birds
so you keep adding layers to make it
interesting they don’t want to come back
but when you’re designing a new bird
that when you touch the screen will now
fly faster or break into three parts do
you think of making sure that they
follow certain laws of aerodynamics and
physics and emotion of course they all
have their own behavior and everything
in the game has its own own behavior so
you know how the wood car like breaks
down how the rocks you know like we just
saw how they fall and how they get
impacted but of course it’s it’s common
to physics of Angry Birds and that’s
what red has been studying and then
kinda like looking at how do Angry Birds
world actually works and what sites the
birds would be in real life and and
things like that and I think it’s again
bird has because how big does a bird
have to be to break a rock when you hit
it well that’s not what I what I did was
I looked at the acceleration of a bird
and assumed it was on earth and used
that to scale how big everything is and
it turns out that the red bird would be
like that big huh yeah that big benkei
it’s a big Angry Birds most gaming
companies just want to build another
game that’s gonna sell or one little
cell – that’ll be downloaded 2 billion
times and that would be the focus of
most gaming companies you decided to
make your company Rovio more than that
you wanted them to be an educational
company but also what you said Disney
you said you wanted it to be bigger than
Disney so that means theme parks yeah
we’re always already build cartoons
movies sure sure
what we’re coming out to do we want to
we want to change the world I mean like
a sole entrepreneur so that’s that’s
kind of what we’re out to do and if you
want to make the world a better place I
think that the best thing you can do is
invest in in in education so I think
that’s a you know very very simple and
then if you look at Rovio today I mean
we don’t look at ourselves as Kanaka
games company or entertainment company
we actually see ourselves as a triple-e
company so we do entertainment we do
education and then we apply
entrepreneurship to everything we do so
that’s kind of where you get too crazy
ambition and like the crazy numbers
again with our Angry Birds playground
program which is kind of early years
education we we are now rolling that out
in in China so we’re building these
kindergartens in in Beijing Shanghai and
do we actually train the first teachers
in China last week and there’s 19
million teachers in China so we still
have a few that we need to trade but we
will get there but I mean take physics
as an example I mean Rick knows this
fact very well that physics can be super
exciting it’s you know like experiments
and you can play around with different
things but then at school you know we
tend to make it not so exciting actually
some people would probably in this room
would consider physics to be the most
boring thing that they know but that’s
because it’s made that
in school and there’s no reason why any
of these you know topic should be boring
senior selling toys obviously you’re
selling sweatshirts yeah wear something
sweatshirt or those Angry Bird shoes or
just the color these are actually like
my Diego shoes that I got from on my
friend’s sister yourself sweatshirts are
so scarf and stuff you sell socks yeah
we have socks underwear they’re an angry
bird underwear yeah of course but let’s
not go into that here no but yeah well
are you wearing Angry Bird oh you never
know you know it’s all about branding
sell forty forty thousand or so products
right now so last year we were in the
top 10 biggest licensed brands so this
new of course still much much bigger
than we are but we are now in the top 10
and our trajectory has been pretty good
so 40,000 yeah so we have one thing our
doing we mentioned the amusement parts
but they’re not big theme parks with
roller coasters they’re smaller parks
one just get people outdoors but to
learning because you have one in yes
described one at NASA
yeah so I mean we now have something
like 20 between twenty and thirty of
these parks all over the planet and two
of them here in the US that we actually
need together with NASA so in Kennedy
Space Center and in Houston and there
are actually Angry Bird space themed of
course and and there you can you can
learn about space in a fun way so again
it’s really also about making that you
know the space program not so serious
but actually bringing some fun into that
so space is one thing that’s in the book
on physics you have a page with an
astronaut floating in space astronauts
in orbit how does that relate to Angry
Birds or does it need to well I mean it
the book does several things one of the
things is to talk about you know very
fun and interesting science things like
how do astronauts float around in space
and use Angry Birds to help explain that
and that’s what I’m doing here because
the Angry Bird space it’s not real but
that astronaut for you
and then you go to black holes because
everybody wants to know a black black
holes right and Angry Birds even has the
new bird or sorry we have to space eagle
in in nitro space that actually creates
garlic its own black holes when you use
that and then it just sucks all the
planets and objects that you have in the
gaming in there so you can tell and also
kinda like the Mighty Eagle in the
classic game and have you gotten
feedback on this does this explain in a
way that people can understand because
black holes are about as confusing as
yeah I understand either but you know no
one really there’s a lot of things that
no one really understands at the fullest
level right and we can explain certain
things about black holes and and in this
case you know it’s it’s a short it’s a
short narrative you know you can see the
whole page right there and so trying to
find something to say about black holes
and a short amount of space is not very
easy it’s kind of like a haiku
right you’ve got an iPad here yeah yeah
would you’d like to see maybe the next
thing we have that yeah I think I have
some new stuff that can show because
there’s always new stuff coming out yeah
with Angry Birds so this is garlic what
it looks like
and then the futures like all the birds
you know that you’ve seen the other
games and they test different challenges
and things like that
I’ll show you want to like the first
tracks it’s like the lord of your clark
downhill so let’s do that
so it’s the same words a pig that you
know from all the other games but now
they are up to it different comic
challenge here so but actually one thing
that just also thought I’ll show so we
we have Angry Birds toons TV channel in
all our games so those who play the game
probably know about that already but one
thing that we added actually in the last
couple of days which is interesting is
that besides our own series we also have
added some other channels so here you
can see you know like our our series
here you know with all the all the
different episodes but there’s also then
some new animations that we added from
from some partners but one thing that
we’ve also added this the National
Geographic Kids Channel and how many
people go to this channel this is an
Internet we actually hit yeah it’s it’s
a internet channel it’s in all our games
you can also find it on the web now we
we also launched that last week – and
stop TV but we hit a billion views for
our own animated series in seven months
so I owe you a pretty good start I mean
yeah I mean like it’s you know Justin
Bieber gets on oh yeah yeah it seemed me
I think that he gets quite a few views
as well but but yeah so we have you know
like things like like it’s not you or
like here’s the amazing animals channel
so you can see that 75 in all our games
yeah
again there’s there’s a lot of more
third-party content that we’re adding to
to the channel and it’s available
globally so this is now you can view
this in China in Brazil in Russia here
anywhere and it’s all free so you know
you might want to check that out and now
you have people coming to you saying
part famous names like Star Wars you
have a Star Wars reverbs yeah and
they’re just saying it’s hard to believe
that Star Wars would say we went to a
partner with somebody else you would
think that would be the iconic
but anybody was actually with collect
the collaboration and we did with with
Lucas for for Star Wars and I mean we
can like we can find some some
interesting Star Wars content here as
well who might want to play like for
example Darth vader-like thing here but
when we talk about Star Wars but we
Lucas was actually great to work
together with them because we have lots
of Star Wars fans on our side
I work in trouble and they turns out
that they have a lot of Angry Birds fans
so if you look at the game you look at
the books that we’ve done you can really
see that it’s made by fans and we have a
lot of kids here and I know you play the
game so maybe you have some questions so
why don’t we start in the back where the
hand is raised right by the mic and then
we’ll come down forward and if all the
animals that are against Birds why pigs
yeah it’s a it’s again it’s a just
because but what I think that it’s now
become you know like even you know a
very young children now know that green
pigs steal eggs and birds get angry so
it’s coloured become reality so and
actually weird Angry Birds it’s the
brand itself it’s it’s a brand that begs
for a question why are the birds salary
and once you ask that question then
we’re like in your head and stuck there
forever so that’s our question I’m very
interested in your education aspect and
I was wondering
for instance in China or wherever you go
with this are you letting teachers and
kids look behind the curtain at the
specific science math whatever it is
you’re going to offer so that the
children themselves know okay if I do
this I’ll be better at this what is very
important that in school you shouldn’t
come up kill the natural curiosity I
mean young children are the best
learners on the planet but then school
tends to take that curia curiosity out
of you when I was just actually we went
to to Japan went to Korea went to China
we met with the education ministers in
in these countries and they realize that
they have a
huge problem I mean Korea now is top of
the list you know best education if you
look at the tests at the same time 25
percent of the Korean kids are
considering suicide why because the
pressure is immense to perform and I
think that that’s a very very scary
system so what we are trying to do is
again create a healthy balance between
school and life so that it’s not just
you know school school school and you
know like you study for the test but you
actually create an environment where you
encourage the natural curiosity of kids
to learn because it’s in all of us and I
think that you see the Supreme Orange
when you’re teaching the college
students you have to spice up a lesson
I mean I’ve come interested I don’t do
that I don’t I mean I don’t spice up the
lesson to make them interested I try to
present things that they can spice
themselves up huh yeah I find the best
activities at the day college level are
things that really don’t have any
instructions so you know there’s not a
they’re not following the rules there
they’re just they’re playing it playing
with more expensive equipment but
they’re still playing that’s what hungry
birds is doing with this these lessons
that are in the book in in the book that
book is really an overview of different
ideas and physics to get you kind of
like the icing on top of the cake but
but I think the game of Angry Birds is
set up so that you can make your own
experiment very easily so were you drawn
to Angry Birds as a game before you were
associated with writing the book or did
yeah no I did the game I did the physics
of the game for a said I I played the
game because you know it’s fun and then
then when I find things that are fun I
like to make them more fun by by adding
in physics that’s just what I do so yeah
I do the same thing I know don’t we all
yeah so that’s where I started we know
dude does it is it just like projectile
motion I don’t know yeah this is this is
what scientists do anyway they don’t do
it they do it with real life they do it
with you know black holes they do with
electrons and protons and things like
that too but those are more expensive to
to work with and Angry Birds was it was
19
since at the time yeah yeah do we have a
question then I’ll get it okay right
over here okay first of all thank you
very much for making long road trips and
plane flights more tolerable and the
question I have what exactly are the
birds saying or what was the inspiration
like a zo bird saying Pele for the
soccer star from a few decades back or
you can click here and read a lot into
what the birds are saying but they’re
not really saying a whole lot sometimes
they might be saying some Finnish words
but we were too much about that but but
again they’re not really really saying
anything so it’s just some some colic
sounds and noises that we were developer
sort of game actually made so and all
the collect window you know the annoying
laugh tore by the peaks when you don’t
pass a level that’s actually our
developers laughing school night so we
want to let everyone go but if you
didn’t get your homework don’t tell your
teachers were doing physics tonight with
the yeah with the physics professor from
southeastern Louisiana University and
the marketing director of Angry Birds
thank you very much for joining
you
Angry Birds not for like a hundred days

education and then we apply
entrepreneurship to everything we do so
that’s kind of where you get too crazy
ambition and like the crazy numbers
again with our Angry Birds playground
program which is kind of early years
education we we are now rolling that out
in in China so we’re building these
kindergartens in in Beijing Shanghai and
do we actually train the first teachers
in China last week and there’s 19
million teachers in China so we still
have a few that we need to trade but we
will get there but I mean take physics
as an example I mean Rick knows this
fact very well that physics can be super
exciting it’s you know like experiments
and you can play around with different
things but then at school you know we
tend to make it not so exciting actually
some people would probably in this room
would consider physics to be the most
boring thing that they know but that’s
because it’s made that
in school and there’s no reason why any
of these you know topic should be boring
senior selling toys obviously you’re
selling sweatshirts yeah wear something
sweatshirt or those Angry Bird shoes or
just the color these are actually like
my Diego shoes that I got from on my
friend’s sister yourself sweatshirts are
so scarf and stuff you sell socks yeah
we have socks underwear they’re an angry
bird underwear yeah of course but let’s
not go into that here no but yeah well
are you wearing Angry Bird oh you never
know you know it’s all about branding
sell forty forty thousand or so products
right now so last year we were in the
top 10 biggest licensed brands so this
new of course still much much bigger
than we are but we are now in the top 10
and our trajectory has been pretty good
so 40,000 yeah so we have one thing our
doing we mentioned the amusement parts
but they’re not big theme parks with
roller coasters they’re smaller parks
one just get people outdoors but to
learning because you have one in yes
described one at NASA
yeah so I mean we now have something
like 20 between twenty and thirty of
these parks all over the planet and two
of them here in the US that we actually
need together with NASA so in Kennedy
Space Center and in Houston and there
are actually Angry Bird space themed of
course and and there you can you can
learn about space in a fun way so again
it’s really also about making that you
know the space program not so serious
but actually bringing some fun into that
so space is one thing that’s in the book
on physics you have a page with an
astronaut floating in space astronauts
in orbit how does that relate to Angry
Birds or does it need to well I mean it
the book does several things one of the
things is to talk about you know very
fun and interesting science things like
how do astronauts float around in space
and use Angry Birds to help explain that
and that’s what I’m doing here because
the Angry Bird space it’s not real but
that astronaut for you
and then you go to black holes because
everybody wants to know a black black
holes right and Angry Birds even has the
new bird or sorry we have to space eagle
in in nitro space that actually creates
garlic its own black holes when you use
that and then it just sucks all the
planets and objects that you have in the
gaming in there so you can tell and also
kinda like the Mighty Eagle in the
classic game and have you gotten
feedback on this does this explain in a
way that people can understand because
black holes are about as confusing as
yeah I understand either but you know no
one really there’s a lot of things that
no one really understands at the fullest
level right and we can explain certain
things about black holes and and in this
case you know it’s it’s a short it’s a
short narrative you know you can see the
whole page right there and so trying to
find something to say about black holes
and a short amount of space is not very
easy it’s kind of like a haiku
right you’ve got an iPad here yeah yeah
would you’d like to see maybe the next
thing we have that yeah I think I have
some new stuff that can show because
there’s always new stuff coming out yeah
with Angry Birds so this is garlic what
it looks like
and then the futures like all the birds
you know that you’ve seen the other
games and they test different challenges
and things like that
I’ll show you want to like the first
tracks it’s like the lord of your clark
downhill so let’s do that
so it’s the same words a pig that you
know from all the other games but now
they are up to it different comic
challenge here so but actually one thing
that just also thought I’ll show so we
we have Angry Birds toons TV channel in
all our games so those who play the game
probably know about that already but one
thing that we added actually in the last
couple of days which is interesting is
that besides our own series we also have
added some other channels so here you
can see you know like our our series
here you know with all the all the
different episodes but there’s also then
some new animations that we added from
from some partners but one thing that
we’ve also added this the National
Geographic Kids Channel and how many
people go to this channel this is an
Internet we actually hit yeah it’s it’s
a internet channel it’s in all our games
you can also find it on the web now we
we also launched that last week – and
stop TV but we hit a billion views for
our own animated series in seven months
so I owe you a pretty good start I mean
yeah I mean like it’s you know Justin
Bieber gets on oh yeah yeah it seemed me
I think that he gets quite a few views
as well but but yeah so we have you know
like things like like it’s not you or
like here’s the amazing animals channel
so you can see that 75 in all our games
yeah
again there’s there’s a lot of more
third-party content that we’re adding to
to the channel and it’s available
globally so this is now you can view
this in China in Brazil in Russia here
anywhere and it’s all free so you know
you might want to check that out and now
you have people coming to you saying
part famous names like Star Wars you
have a Star Wars reverbs yeah and
they’re just saying it’s hard to believe
that Star Wars would say we went to a
partner with somebody else you would
think that would be the iconic
but anybody was actually with collect
the collaboration and we did with with
Lucas for for Star Wars and I mean we
can like we can find some some
interesting Star Wars content here as
well who might want to play like for
example Darth vader-like thing here but
when we talk about Star Wars but we
Lucas was actually great to work
together with them because we have lots
of Star Wars fans on our side
I work in trouble and they turns out
that they have a lot of Angry Birds fans
so if you look at the game you look at
the books that we’ve done you can really
see that it’s made by fans and we have a
lot of kids here and I know you play the
game so maybe you have some questions so
why don’t we start in the back where the
hand is raised right by the mic and then
we’ll come down forward and if all the
animals that are against Birds why pigs
yeah it’s a it’s again it’s a just
because but what I think that it’s now
become you know like even you know a
very young children now know that green
pigs steal eggs and birds get angry so
it’s coloured become reality so and
actually weird Angry Birds it’s the
brand itself it’s it’s a brand that begs
for a question why are the birds salary
and once you ask that question then
we’re like in your head and stuck there
forever so that’s our question I’m very
interested in your education aspect and
I was wondering
for instance in China or wherever you go
with this are you letting teachers and
kids look behind the curtain at the
specific science math whatever it is
you’re going to offer so that the
children themselves know okay if I do
this I’ll be better at this what is very
important that in school you shouldn’t
come up kill the natural curiosity I
mean young children are the best
learners on the planet but then school
tends to take that curia curiosity out
of you when I was just actually we went
to to Japan went to Korea went to China
we met with the education ministers in
in these countries and they realize that
they have a
huge problem I mean Korea now is top of
the list you know best education if you
look at the tests at the same time 25
percent of the Korean kids are
considering suicide why because the
pressure is immense to perform and I
think that that’s a very very scary
system so what we are trying to do is
again create a healthy balance between
school and life so that it’s not just
you know school school school and you
know like you study for the test but you
actually create an environment where you
encourage the natural curiosity of kids
to learn because it’s in all of us and I
think that you see the Supreme Orange
when you’re teaching the college
students you have to spice up a lesson
I mean I’ve come interested I don’t do
that I don’t I mean I don’t spice up the
lesson to make them interested I try to
present things that they can spice
themselves up huh yeah I find the best
activities at the day college level are
things that really don’t have any
instructions so you know there’s not a
they’re not following the rules there
they’re just they’re playing it playing
with more expensive equipment but
they’re still playing that’s what hungry
birds is doing with this these lessons
that are in the book in in the book that
book is really an overview of different
ideas and physics to get you kind of
like the icing on top of the cake but
but I think the game of Angry Birds is
set up so that you can make your own
experiment very easily so were you drawn
to Angry Birds as a game before you were
associated with writing the book or did
yeah no I did the game I did the physics
of the game for a said I I played the
game because you know it’s fun and then
then when I find things that are fun I
like to make them more fun by by adding
in physics that’s just what I do so yeah
I do the same thing I know don’t we all
yeah so that’s where I started we know
dude does it is it just like projectile
motion I don’t know yeah this is this is
what scientists do anyway they don’t do
it they do it with real life they do it
with you know black holes they do with
electrons and protons and things like
that too but those are more expensive to
to work with and Angry Birds was it was
19
since at the time yeah yeah do we have a
question then I’ll get it okay right
over here okay first of all thank you
very much for making long road trips and
plane flights more tolerable and the
question I have what exactly are the
birds saying or what was the inspiration
like a zo bird saying Pele for the
soccer star from a few decades back or
you can click here and read a lot into
what the birds are saying but they’re
not really saying a whole lot sometimes
they might be saying some Finnish words
but we were too much about that but but
again they’re not really really saying
anything so it’s just some some colic
sounds and noises that we were developer
sort of game actually made so and all
the collect window you know the annoying
laugh tore by the peaks when you don’t
pass a level that’s actually our
developers laughing school night so we
want to let everyone go but if you
didn’t get your homework don’t tell your
teachers were doing physics tonight with
the yeah with the physics professor from
southeastern Louisiana University and
the marketing director of Angry Birds
thank you very much for joining
you
