VT Finalist | National Geographic Bee 2012

hi my name is Chris and I’ll be
representing Vermont for the 2012
National Geographic feet so I live here
rural Vermont lots of forests this is my
home second most rural state in the
country and so there’s tons of farms and
like you there’s a lot of good views
here and you can look out you can see
the farms and the hills and the woods
and we do our part here we have we have
some chickens here and then we have you
have a flock of sheep too and then I can
show you one of the land so this is your
ghen son and he was born just about a
month ago and he’s one of our lamps he’s
a Katahdin breed of sheep so they don’t
really have wool if hair instead you can
see the hair and we’re gonna probably
eat him in the fall or maybe next spring
yum yum yum and we get my family we get
all of our electricity from the solar
panels over a course of the year you can
see in there even though it’s not that
sunny here in Vermont they still work
perfectly fine there’s tons of small
farms and we’re really known for our
local food there’s in the spring there’s
maple sugaring where we tap the maple
cheese and make syrup and then there’s
lots of like farmers with their cows and
there’s organic farms growing vegetables
but there’s also a lot of people forage
for their food just like growing wild
and right here you can see we have some
wild leeks and these profs we’ve pop up
really early every spring and you can
just pull them right out of the ground
to eat them they taste like a green
onion ha
modest mountain biking there’s tons of
trails around here and clearly ponders
go ride through the woods come on it’s a
really great place to go backpacking or
hiking and there’s a there’s the Green
Mountains in Vermont they run from down
in Massachusetts all the way up to
canada and along them is the long trail
which is about 270 miles long and it’s
the law oldest long-distance hiking
trail in the US or anywhere in America
and so I’ve hiked about half minutes
tons of fun this is my trusty hiking
partner here you can see him his name is
shorty Treecko crisscrossed by tons of
water waves like many sizes this is a
group here this is broad brook again and
so you can go slick canoeing here you
can go kayaking rafting to being a lot
of people do that this would be a little
small but you could also go swimming
there’s tons of little swimming holes in
Vermont that you can discover like the
more you live here this is one of them
so now I’m going to get in
so you can see here these this bridge is
quite destroyed because this fall
there’s a huge storm here as tropical
storm irene and so it brings the water
levels in the rivers in the brooks by 28
feet on average here in vermont and so
it just took out so many roads and mild
miles of roads and bridges and it just
destroyed them a lot of them are still
not fixed even in the spring like this
one this is right near my house on broad
brook and then so I’m really concerned
about climate change and if I could rule
the world for a day I would try to
combat global warming and climate change
because without that then you’re going
to have more extreme weather events and
like tropical storms and droughts and
floods like just like this and they
would just be terrible for the world
Oh
I like to take advantage of like all the
things our school has to offer and even
though it’s really small there is still
some pretty cool things time you love
sports soccer and basketball and in the
spring I do baseball and I run track I
also scheme
I love Vermont
