TX Finalist | National Geographic Bee 2013

hi I’m chin my moorthi and I am
representing Texas in the 2013 National
Geographic Bee I am a fifth grader at
Paragon prep in Austin and now I would
like to tell a few things about our
great city I am standing in front of the
Texas State Capitol the capital was
designed by Detroit architect ii ii
myers and it’s the second largest
Capitol building in the US only the
National Capitol in Washington DC is
bigger the outside walls are made of
Texas red granite while the inside and
dome walls are made of limestone if I
was to visit austin the capital would be
one of my top priorities to visit down
the street there’s the Congress Avenue
Bridge which house is the largest urban
bat colony in the world it encompasses
of over a million bats and each night
they make a dramatic slight from out
from under the bridge out into the night
to find their food here is town lake
Lake created by the damming of the Texas
Colorado River here you can stand up
paddleboard canoe kayak and in some
areas even swim there’s even a hike and
bike trail along the shore of the lake
town lake is also called lady bird lake
named after Lady Bird Johnson who’s the
First Lady of the United States from
nineteen sixty three to nineteen
sixty-nine she was involved in the town
lake beautification project which helped
make town lake into the place it is
today many last night still remember her
and the labor Johnson Wildflower Center
which is dedicated to it reintroducing
native Texas plants into Texas
landscapes is named in her honor Austin
is called the live music capital of the
world and for good reason to its music
festivals such as Austin Austin City
Limits and South by Southwest attract
thousands of tourists every year in
addition to being a music and film
festival South by Southwest is also an
education and technology festival their
new advancements in those fields can be
shown to the public if I could trade
places with any Explorer or rural beater
I would be Zebulon Pike because his
expedition from 1806 to 1807 opened up
the Southwest to Americans if I had a
free ticket to travel anywhere in the
world i would go to pursue a new guinea
because i would like to hear all 815
indigenous languages spoken there
what’s my study trick well I usually
find that if I stay something it’s six
better in my head than if I read or hear
it if I were put in charge of the earth
for a day I would try to solve the clean
water issue because there are a billion
people who do not have clean water to
drink I would prevent companies from
locking up water reserves and stopping
other people from accessing them that
way more people will have a chance to
drink water Kane a deal do you know the
inductive that name for Brodin island
which is off the east coast of Baffin
Island the answer is kicked a dodge walk
my favorite geography fact is that
Devil’s Island which is off the coast of
french Guinea how’s the world’s most
notorious prison until nineteen forty
nine landing by boat on the island was
so treacherous that prison officials had
to connect the island by cable car to
another less dangerous island when I
grow up I would like to be a
cartographer because i really enjoy
drawing maps
