To the North Pole in Darkness | Nat Geo Live

in 2006 that was also a year to remember
and that’s when I got a brilliant idea
why not ski to the North Pole in the
middle of the winter in the dark period
but I knew that this was not going to be
a solo trip so I asked this guy here
Mike horn from South Africa to join me
so we teamed up and in mid-january we
flew to Kay Porter jet ski and started
on this expedition and this is one of
the most intense experiences I ever had
in my whole life jumping from one ice
crew to another we were swimming across
this pitch-black open leads from one ice
floe and across we fought in tents
called
polar bears lurking around but at the
same time this is probably also the most
beautiful expedition I’ve been at and
especially when we had the full moon and
can see a little bit of what we had
around us and when this bleak light from
the moon spread out there across the
pack ice it was it was just like being
on a different planet or or day one on
the earth and making myself
we felt that small we were one thousand
kilometres from the nearest people but
then was fine because we knew that we
here we have nothing to say here the
nature is the boss we just have to be
careful and humble and do the right
thing now when we plan this trip not
many people thought we would make it and
when I asked National Geographic about
maybe doing a story said well let’s see
when you get back home I’m glad just I’m
glad they didn’t say if you get back
home
well we trusted each other 100% I put my
life in the hands of my cord and he did
the same with me and on a trip like this
you have to watch your friends back and
you can’t do that if you’re only
thinking about yourself
read this or you past it now oh you
chose different dating yeah what’s yours
this is what my mr. series is that way
anyway we’re at the pole hey great great
trip hey thanks a lot my friend we did
this together for sure man now we did an
amazing experience we did it as a team
and it was important although I can
barely see you’re my favorite the earth
28 miners is the 23rd of March 2006 and
we have just accomplished the first ever
winter expedition to the North Pole
end of story yeah
