we’re at King Haakon Bay on the south
side of South Georgia island you get to
the beach you see these elephant seals
and you think they’re just lying around
they look so lazy but if you start to
watch them for just a little while you
realize that their life is actually very
tough I mean for one thing the part of
it that we’re not seeing is that they
can dive a mile deep and stay underwater
for over an hour they dive deeper than
sperm whales it’s really incredible what
they have to go through just to make a
living but here on the beach where they
look like they’re just resting and
hanging out it’s still a battle
perfectly to the death you see these
huge bulls that are bleeding and gashed
the teeth broken all to try to hold down
a harem and a chance to mate and they
are completely exhausted by doing that
they can only do it for about one season
or so and the rest of their lives is
really pretty brutal and lying around
and being lazy is not what it’s about
even though that’s the first impression
