max Macungie plant is a hands-on
operation but the floor at their
Hagerstown facility has a whole
different look
much of the intricate assembly work done
on the engines is accomplished by
machines
Mack machine some of its main engine
components right here in the plan giant
lathes carve out camshafts from solid
pieces of steel
the process begins with a cast-iron
engine block on the assembly line they
place the major parts by hand the blocks
then take a ride through a maze of
conveyors and robotics
we’re critical components are installed
with a precision only a machine can
attain when you build some of the most
powerful truck engines on the planet
precision is everything
next the engine’s hitch a ride on an Ag
V or automated guided vehicle these
roving robots carry the engines through
a series of manual stations the AGVs
follow wires buried in the factory floor
and time the movements of each engine
perfectly
once it is station they can lift and
rotate them for easy installations over
the course of several hours an army of
technicians build up and inspect the
engines
