See First Fossil Recovered from Cave (Expedition Update) | National Geographic

we got a fossil that is really cool I
said one hand I think people trying to
keep that professional image on the
other hand is like we have been working
our whole life for this moment I can’t
be professional what are you talking
about the first fossil that came up out
of the cave was the mandible with the
teeth in place in a lot of South African
caves you have bones encased in brescia
which is the cemented sediment with
pebbles and growls it’s a mess but this
mandible right on the surface it’s just
gorgeous
the amazing thing is that this isn’t
just a mandible there are so many more
fossil bones just lying on the surface
and possibly below each time we go down
in a shift and every time we come back
we bring up more fossilized bones once
we bring them out of the cave we go
straight to the science tent where they
unwrap them look at them and propose
initial IDs there are a lot of fossils
right on the surface right around where
where that piece was and the science
team is gonna be able to tell a lot
about what the rest of the fossils down
there are
