I’m Daniel pink and I’m gonna show you
how to use some diabolical psychology
for the greater good are you ready
nobody ever listens to in-flight safety
instructions but if something really bad
happens on a plane knowing what to do
could mean the difference between life
and death to take on this problem we
went to a facility down in Florida that
had a simulator
it basically replicated this part of an
airplane and what we did is we tried
different ways of rewriting the safety
instructions to see if it made a
difference when we simulated a crash and
try to evacuate will lose consciousness
one technique worked like a dream this
may result in your suffocation fear this
technique works so well for two reasons
first fear is an emotion that narrows
our focus when we’re alarmed when we’re
frightened we zoom in on what we need to
do that help people remember the
instructions the second reason is that
we explained why people had to do these
things why you had to put up your tray
table you don’t want to get your
internal organs puncture why they had to
put eggs underneath the seat in front of
them you don’t want to fall and get
trampled and die and what we found is
that when you explain why people have to
do something they’re more likely to do
it how can you put these ideas in place
in your own life well let’s start with
fear use fear don’t go overboard but
every once in a while
pull it out of your pocket so let’s say
that your kids don’t want to wear their
seat belt explain to them the
consequences of not wearing one they’ll
likely buckle up even more important
look for ways to explain why when people
know why they have to do something they
understand the reasons more deeply and
they adhere to the behavior more
strongly so if you’re a boss or a
teacher or a parent this week have two
fewer conversations about how to do
something and two more about why to do
it in the first place
we’ve given you the power use it well
until next time I’m Daniel pink just
