Rule Your World: Selfishness | Crowd Control

I’m Daniel pink and I’m gonna show you
how to use some diabolical psychology
for the greater good are you ready we’ve
all been there you’re at a store you buy
your stuff in the cashier hands you a
plastic bag we don’t think about it but
we should we decided to force people to
think about the consequences of using
plastic bags we went to a grocery store
and we had the checkout clubs give
people a choice
hi there would you like a reusable bag
or would you like to choke a baby seal
Gia’s like a reasonable value would you
like to kill a baby suit yeah it’s a
little hard but it worked
people are often blind to the
consequences of their actions so making
those consequences more apparent can
redirect their behavior so when people
look at a bag and they realize that this
bag might be something that a seal a
baby seal could choke on
well they might do something differently
there are lots of things that you can do
to take what we learned in this
experiment and apply it in your own life
suppose you’re in office and you want
people to recycle you can set up two
bins next to one you can have a sign
that says this is for people who care
about the environment they’re going to
move to their children next to the
second one this is for people who don’t
care at all my guess is that you’re
gonna get a lot more recycling because
no one wants to be identified behaving
badly and that’s the key point here if
you want to stop bad behavior there are
two things that you can do you can take
private if you get here and make it
public and you can show people the
consequences of their actions if we all
do that we can make the world a better
place remember we’re working for the
greater good here until next time I’m
