I’m Daniel pink and I’m going to show
you how to use some diabolical
psychology for the greater good
are you ready speeding is a huge problem
in America and we came up with a great
solution
we built a musical road when drivers
went exactly 45 miles an hour the road
play America the Beautiful there are two
reasons this works so well the first is
that all of us engage in default
behaviors we do stuff without even
thinking about it so by introducing this
musical road we surprise people and get
them to change their behavior now the
other reason is that music itself has a
huge effect on our behavior when you
listen to really fast music you move
more quickly you run faster you drive
faster but if you listen to music that
is about the same beats per minute as a
resting heart rate they’re a lot more
mellow you drive so you can use music to
trick yourself the next time you’re
driving don’t put on music with a super
fast beat choose some music with a
slower beat inevitably you’re gonna
drive more slowly and you’re gonna drive
more safely and there’s a broader
principle here too we’re so unconscious
of what’s going on in our world that
sometimes we need surprises so let’s say
you want people to recycle what a
basketball hoop over the recycling bin
and suddenly something that’s really
boring becomes a lot more fun when we
introduce things that mellow people out
that make boring things a little bit
more interesting we behave better and
that makes the world better hmm we’ve
