Refugee Finds a Future in Photography | Nat Geo Live

alright o’clock high I think it’s
important you know we as photographers
we work from who we are from our past
for more life experience and so I would
like you to understand a little bit
about how a quat grew up and it might
help you understand his images that’s a
great person um I’m as herbs I was not
growing up in South Sudan I was greener
out outside my whole life has been a
bibliography G for my whole life and I
was really very happy one photo comes
comes in and were being divided into
groups and I had that some group will go
to refugee comes to Gandhi biase oh god
I wish I would be among people that go
to that place nobody has captured my
store and I say odd the time that I will
capture my story I want to document my
story because I see those four outside
there they are like me this slip some of
them sleep under the trees along the
river my being bitten by mosquitoes the
trees are not that enough for them to
cover them for the shady so I I’m off a
lot until I went inside the river knife
I wanna fight these beautiful girls they
were assuming is idea so and actually
come to mind that when you are in
hardship the Silla hope you still have
hope for the west and this young kid
though they leave them fair and other
trees the go outside they still find the
life outside there so I understand there
is another group from federal camp that
went to a camp and they did not have a
good experience and I don’t know what
happened there but you were in a
different place and you had a different
approach perhaps
I understand you left your cameras in
the car and maybe from your own life
experience of living in camps you you
found a different way to be a
photographer or be a human being first
and then a photographer can you just
talk a little bit about that was that
something you decided upon or was that
your instinct or that’s a really
interesting question whether our leader
that case is it in refugee camps and now
people are mixed up these are a lot from
a ties you know that and there’s people
that need help and you if you are going
to something I won’t look for something
you need actual to humble yourself and
have trust which each other so that you
have that if you have that trust you get
what you need and all you need to do
fast also you need to get a friendship
so what do you do these are group that
went to another camp that does that
group was real perceived badly and they
were almost arrest by this but our group
the way we go also we will go we don’t
go as I put graefes but we go as people
that we need to get touch with them live
with them enjoy our life together so
that will be like our community or we
did is believe our cameras inside the
vehicle we go fast which area with them
we share that moment together till the
gate as as part of them because we know
that it will not it not before the
one day that which are going to take
pictures it will be for some days for
example this among the oddities child
and the person that you’re holding it is
one our trainees Jay look and if you see
that they need real comfort they need to
be comforted children are for everybody
outside there so
and this place did you talk to this lady
before you photograph because i myself
the way they look at me they take me as
part of their because from the first day
that i went there i will go deeply into
the place and I and I read myself that
my life story how I was until I come
sometime I put my camera outside and I
go to them to help them in heaven that
they did so they take me ask this child
but not a photograph but a grappa they
take me ask desire and FDR was my camera
next to them they don’t mind because
they say ah he’s always Shire so you
want people inside of South Sudan to
understand how these folks are living
but what about the rest of the world
what about the people here what about
the people in every other part of this
um that’s a good question like a pig
settings are universal language it
doesn’t speak for a particular people
it’s peek outside viewing the world
because some people don’t know out rate
but if you know Odyssey and you see that
picture it tell everything all about the
world and we take pictures not for
particular place but we take it so that
the whole world will see what is taking
place in that location but not only for
South Sudanese because everybody around
this wall most of us will go but there’s
a generation that will come and they
need to know more about that time what
was happening that time and that’s what
I love to take pictures and it will be
paden it is part of my life and release
in my life I’m really proud for that
when
so you said that this is one of your
most important photographs why oh why
does this move you this picture is to
mops me a lot and really this the moment
this is the movement that I’ve been
going through all my life because you
see the child that child that is
sleeping now some people might say that
this day enemies hope it doesn’t hop hop
for the future and yet as I’m sitting
here man living example i can say me
I’ve been suffering yet I never I never
said that thus end of me and I do
something and if I say that that was
enemy I’ll contribute in Washington this
time but I say oh that one can stop my
unit my my vision am I follow my bishop
so if there is some water that can hold
up my hand and show me the direction
that I’m going I can still make it this
is the life that I was those so much
like that was my life and serum me
remind me of my life bugling when I was
I refugee and I’m really happy for that
picture and I like that picture is so
much powerful picture thank
you
