real talk and we’re on you just watched
the latest episode of wicked tuna now
it’s time for wicked tuna Real Talk the
weekly web show where summer
Gloucester’s best bluefin tuna captain’s
give us their take on what just happened
my name is Mike sulk I’m your host
joining us this week we have Captain
Paul Hebert of the kelly-ann captain
Dave Marciano the hard merchandise and
Captain TJ of the hot tuna thank you
guys for being with us on this last
episode we saw a Paulie bird breaking
the drought finally catching his first
fish of what may be a long season but
we’re gonna get to that in a moment Paul
I had to write this down I apologize
it’s the only way I could remember the
boys let me see if I can read off the
book we got how many boats have you been
on since the show began I think probably
a half a does half a dozen so you go
with six boats you guys have any other
guesses or you want the over-under on
six huh staking this is the right answer
in season one tuna calm then the Bounty
Hunter season two tuna calm again on the
Lisa & Jake and season three it was the
Miss sambuca North versus South you’re
on the pinwheel with Tyler and now
finally the Kellyanne yeah so there you
go those are the boats so how important
would it be for you to get your own boat
it would be that’s the goal
I’m trying to make enough money to buy
my own boat are you close I’m there
you’re there I am there at some point
going to see you in your own boat with
the wicked pissah will finally actually
be a wicket on my life you believe it on
my life you guys believe it Dave
actually have the answer on the show you
can’t just pretend what I can guarantee
you see see is this a nice cake yes I
will have my own boat I don’t know but
you know what I know how hot it is to
own a boat okay so um you know you
notice I did say nothing right cuz hey
it’s hot it’s it’s not easy to be able
to pull it all off and make it work and
make the payments and keep the boat up
and running yeah it’s a lot hotter than
it looks when Paul’s gone
from boat to boat what’s happened you
hear a lot of hearsay in the fishery
people talk bad about everyone behind
their backs of times oh yeah not either
they honestly say I’ve known Paul since
as a little kid
he’s been on a lot of boats that
produced a lot of fish Dave he’s never
been on your boat we’ve seen him on a
bunch of other boat with a lot of arrows
that we all know and love what would it
look like to have Paul on your boat
um there’d be a lot of duct tape flying
around yeah basically there’s not have
duct tape in the world I don’t think
that would work
it wouldn’t work and you know sure I
bust his balls right that’s all good fun
but you know what Paul would I just have
that same type of personality too I
think we’d clash paint a same boat yeah
because we both not have our own way of
doing things and we you know we’d have
that same class that you kind of had
with Dave maybe hapten a nice thing here
where you better respect the other guy
but ultimately we’ll both have our own
way and I think eventually we Butthead
to get that Paul there there are people
that are great at being leaders and
captains and belong in the front of the
boat there are people that are great at
doing what they do in the back of the
boat you believe you have what it takes
to be in the front of the boat full-time
with your own boat all that
responsibility etcetera I’ve been
running boats since I was 11 years old I
just never had enough money to buy my
own boat ever since I was a little kid
that’s all I did my father’s boat was a
58 footer I ran that when I was 15 let’s
move on to what we saw in this episode
of Paul I don’t want to call this a
mutiny but you know you’re the guys on
your bow mauro specifically was
definitely questioning your leadership
at some point and wondering whether or
not you were the right fit for his boat
he owns the boat he’s brought you on it
you hadn’t caught a fish yet how does
that feel to know a you’re struggling
but B the guys don’t necessarily have
your back on your own boat that’s where
the crew like my brother Bruce and I
opposed to me and them guys we get it
I’ve been dry for two months before but
in one week I’ve caught 20 fish you to
be a commercial tuna fisherman and do it
for a living
not just for a pat on the back or a bet
chopper
but wait a minute wait a minute you said
what did you say 13 in four hours 30
says opponent okay our client well we
were on a run real boat when you were
saying all that I yeah no I was I was
gonna call B yeah yeah no no I all guys
not 24 but realistically like with my
brother Bruce we work so good together
we can catch a lot of fish we understand
when things go wrong like you losing
that bitch all the time people go dry
this is the beginning of the year if you
start out weaving the dock with a sour
taste in your mouth I’m by myself I’m
not giving up those guys can cry in
their wine glass I can’t I have bills to
pay this is my living if they want to
cry they could stay at the dock I’m
going to make money cuz I know there’s
gonna be a week or two where I’m gonna
kill it
TJ how does your dad handle dry spells
he takes it out on me
you know if things are going great uh he
likes to take the credit when things are
going bad you know it falls on me this
business is a feast of famine business
he’s a successful guy he that wants it
to always goes you can tell him but I’m
very entertained by your dad yeah I know
you love real deal he’s a salt alehrer
they’re nice he’s real glass he would
give you anything and uh very important
to be where I’m at because I’m always a
little amazed for for you your dad your
brother it’s amazing for you guys are
all pretty especially you’re a pretty
calm guy and yet right before you guys
finally get that fish on board there
seems to be more chaos on your both in
it you know if you watch most the time
it’s when dad is on board it kind of
puts us on edge I’m very relaxed a
couple times this year we had some
hiccups where my brother wasn’t there
with the gaff on time or you know he
wasn’t doing something he hasn’t Fischer
me in years
but your dad questions you yeah I got
quest pushes the guy is that about it
right and doesn’t that make you like oh
come on really I can tell you seriously
can yell at me which is fine you know
you can yell at me forever but if I ever
yelled at him
for a mess up which game I’d be looking
for my teeth on the floor fight the guys
you’re working when it’s a battle and
Dave what is your what’s your longest
dry spell I mean look I figures I’ve
gotten three fish for the season
you know like Howie’s like I mean
everybody I was five years I’ve got 35
40 fish right it’s too deficient at
least to me like the year you know when
things weren’t going my way in the past
with laws are different I don’t leave
the tuna rods on the dock I’d pile the
gill nets on the boat and go make I hate
catch dog fish to make money or whatever
it was caught a Pollock unfortunately
these days the laws have changed those
options are on the table as much as they
were before so it does add a little more
stress because we do got to make this
tuna thing work just because you know
the way the regulations are we can’t
really jump back and forth as easily as
we used to well we’ve seen when a boat’s
not catching fish that guys just get
more and more pissed off everyone seems
to turn on each other and then all
sudden you catch a big sudden light
everything is just frozen now we’re this
way you has at most that you had the
most productive efficient got $13,000
fishes yeah that’s what I’m saying so
these guys that just jump on the boat
want to go catch a big giant tuna and
try to do it for a living
I’ve been doing this since I was a baby
my whole family did it my father my
mother my grandparents well you caught
that fish $13,000 and you bring it back
to the to the fish Marga and that guy
says okay we knew it was a gonna give
you $13,000 for your fish how does that
feel when all of a sudden you’re able to
give him that $13,000 payday
well it’s in them their face you know
you saw the guys yay but if we go dry
another week they’re gonna cry again
that’s how pleasure to out people feel
with a friend’s baby whether pressure
whether it’s how would you rate me these
guys don’t do it for a priority for a
living we do it to feed our families
that’s it I mean Dave and I don’t have
anything else we don’t have another job
this is all
got those guys they have jobs they have
they have businesses they have other
jobs we don’t we have just this like the
old saying goes when the going gets
tough everybody leaves that’s right the
other thing we saw this week were the
two harpoon boats get after each other a
little bit not you guys are gonna have
to walk me through this and I know you
guys don’t do that most of the time but
I’m a little confused on the Hollywood
thing so he’s got a plane yeah the guys
don’t have a play they don’t like they
call themselves the great white hunters
right like you know they’re not sitting
there in the boat they don’t know what
they’re talking about when it comes to
tuna fish sure you could call that
huntin I guess just like you know they
get their planes they drive out you know
at 400 miles an hour they happen it’s
like there’s no floods grow every day
you know if you could call you know
shooting cows from a helicopter hunting
right yo you might you might be on the
same page but those guys you can tell
just look at their attitude look at
Hollywood’s attitude right for him it’s
not about anything except saying I
caught I caught I caught some races oh
you know just about Hollywood with the
plane I thought the guys who don’t have
the plane – oh you know I’m not saying
that you know it’s pretty much Hollywood
he’s got that attitude with the plane
right and you know the other guys how
Putin does take a lot of talent a lot I
could never do it but you know you’re
also if I was doing it and do it well
you wouldn’t see me freaking you know
parade around like a freakin errand like
that yeah what could have a play you
know what I mean yeah just that just
rubs me the wrong way by the competition
between one boat that has a plane on one
boat that doesn’t there’s no carbon tip
well they can hold a swing they get both
on the plane they both have a point they
could both have it but they go along no
I understand we were brought up without
planes we had to use our eyes we never
and we had to hunt for them we didn’t
have airplanes they were feeling it at
all – does that feel like shooting no no
it’s their business that’s the business
is that it what he’s doing that is what
he does then for me
oh but you know and again good for him
we all could have that option if we
wanted to spend that money and make
money like that right but you know his a
yeah he does catch a lot of fish a lot
of people don’t understand is is you
really want to find out who the best
that somebody is in any business it’s
the P other people will tell you he’s
not gonna tell you himself
you look like you got one more thing I
know I mean he’s East listen he’s had
some huge seasons he was a phenomenal
ground fishermen yeah he he is a
full-time fisherman years passed there’s
no doubt about here’s the fish fall time
and and there are a lot of very good
operators in the industry there’s no
about that I mean that thing makes me
nervous walking out wat seeing them walk
out of that little plank that thing is
very small and you fall off that thing
you’re gonna get run over by the boat
right well no yeah we can old joke that
would happen to would you’ve never gonna
wrap it up
never wishing death another captain say
I’ve never done a bit running out on
that thing and doing that it’s got to be
pretty rewarding I wouldn’t be getting
any heart pound fish well good stuff
guys good to have all three of you guys
