Proof: Randy Olson on Bridging Cultural Differences | National Geographic

I’m not one of those folks that runs
around you know visually stimulated all
the time I need to have some kind of
mission and the mission is usually
something that I’m angry about or
something that maybe I can help so
photography for me is just one little
hammer you hope that if you pick away at
some social issue that maybe other
people will see it and they’ll do the
same and the cumulative effect will end
up being greater than anything you could
do as an individual if you’re
uncomfortable if you’re wondering if
you’re going to be detained there
there’s also this high that you’re
making photographs you realize that
you’re in a very different place with a
very different set of folks who have
worked things out in a very different
way than you have and are actually much
happier that’s a real privilege to have
that kind of realization from a story if
I go a hundred miles and a group of
people accept me and I’m able to
photograph them or if I go halfway
around the world in a group of people
accepts me and I’m able to photograph
them then that’s what it’s about it’s
more important how people are the same
then how they’re different when you’re
in the stream they’re humans flowing
around you and you’re out in the world
as a photographer there’s no better
place to be
