Proof: Lynn Johnson on the Heroic Nature of Humanity | National Geographic

it is an addiction to go out into the
field to be in the presence of powerful
human emotions to see the incredible
beauty and desperate circumstances that
people are able to survive in to see the
hope nature of humanity just to see the
colors to see the behaviors to see the
thing that you aren’t but want to be
this thing that you will never
understand the you know I mean it’s like
you want to stay home and watch TV no
you know I’m going to be out there
seeing the real deal images are so
powerful that they can change the course
of people’s lives they can change the
course of history it might not happen
with one image it might take thousands
of images layered in a consciousness a
national consciousness and individual
consciousness to really move people
forward move people to action but I do
believe images have that power the
camera allows you to experience that
life on the other side of the camera
with a kind of hyper reality everything
else gets cut out the rest of your life
is completely unimportant and you are
just living in the story you are living
in the lives of those people photography
has taught me that it doesn’t matter it
would also be a rich life even without
the camera because having seen so much
of it I know that I could go on and find
another way to be curious and to share
the most rich and meaningful moments
that have stayed kind of woven inside of
me or moments where I have not
necessarily taken a photograph but have
listened and
and been 100% present in a situation so
I have no photograph to go with a lot of
those moments but they each one of those
moments inform the the times when I do
lift the camera to my eye and I think
you have to be a complete human being
out there as complete and as healthy and
whole as you can be and tells people’s
stories from that you know a very
powerful base I owe that young lady is
standing at the grave I owe those women
who walk for three days to get water I
owe you know my parents and you know all
those colleagues and all those great
editors and all those you know all those
people that helped over the years you
know we are a compilation of all that
wisdom and all that kind of time and
patience you have the responsibility of
the work that if you have you know I
have any kind of gift of being able to
use this camera to tell a story then I
need to be out doing that you know I’m
old enough now people I have like some
gray hair and people were saying well
when you’re gonna retire and like retire
retire who there’s work to be done I
mean we have you know women are still
property in how many countries in the
world no no no no I’m not retiring
there’s still work to do
