the camera gives us a language to work
with one out there in the world engaging
with the world touching the world and
the world is talking back to me through
that camera the pictorial language has a
unique ability to penetrate the human
heart and mind photography has the power
to change the course of civilization
through changing perception we’ve
inherited a huge number of assumptions
inherited wisdom that comes to us from
who knows where it’s just out there in
the ether and we as photographers I
think our highest calling is to
challenge and alter inherited wisdom in
the core of my working life my main
subject has been the collision between
human needs and nature it’s always
seemed to me that that’s one of the
pivotal issues of our moment in history
we can’t stop ever because we have such
a monumental piece of history rolling
along in front of these cameras it would
be crazy to pull them in right now
because look what’s happening ice is the
canary and the global coal mine it’s the
place where you can see and touch and
hear and feel climate change in action
they shoes are alive not not quite
exactly alive in the same sense that
we’re alive with blood pulsing through
our bodies but they’re not these big
dumb lump and static objects these
things are are reacting to the
environment just as you and I are all
the time it’s a reflection to us about
how the world is changing through the
photography we’re able to provide that
compelling hitting you in the gut
evidence that this is real this is not
imaginary this is not about a computer
model that somebody concocted in the
basement of some science lab somewhere
this is what’s happening folks I saw it
my team saw my cameras were there we
were alive when this was happening pay
attention it doesn’t matter what your
political Creed is this belongs to
everybody and I think it’s a tragedy of
our time that it’s been politicized to
do this work it takes a ridiculous
amount of determination
you have to have perseverance beyond
perseverance this is not a business this
is a passion of vocation of calling this
is something you have to do and you feel
like you don’t have any other choice
except to do this you’re driven by
something inside yourself all I care
about is to that picture speak to some
sort of truth that was vibrating out
there in the world
and passed through that lens and
vibrated within me even when the subject
is a chunk of ice you can still feel
that
with one out there in the world engaging
with the world touching the world and
the world is talking back to me through
