Proof: David Guttenfelder on Seeing Life for Yourself | National Geographic

don’t worry I’m a professional and grew
up in this little town and wanted to see
the world and seen the ocean until I was
an adult and I wanted it to be
mind-blowing and it has been did someone
ask you you know like do you want to see
it for yourself like life you want see
life for yourself you go and you see it
people no one was nothing about North
Korea if they know anything at all they
have dreamed up ideas because it’s
completely shut off I’ve seen these
moments of a couple crying at the
airport in Pyongyang I saw children
throw snowballs at each other these
things that are like the most normal
things in the whole world were like a
revelation to me to see that they were
happening in Korea it’s not a cardboard
movie facade it’s a real place people
have lives they get up and go to work so
that’s the kind of pictures that I’ve
always tried to take a picture of people
waiting for the bus in Korea carries a
lot more weight because people start to
see that oh that could be me and they
make connections between people
personally I can’t think of a better
example of how powerful of a tool
photography can be the price of
admission of this amazing amazing life
is that you’ve got to go all the way and
come back and explain to the world what
you saw it’s not vacation if you take
that responsibility seriously it’s very
hard you spend year after year usually
by yourself you come home and the people
who are waiting for you and cheering you
on and love you it’s hard to tell them
how your life really is you ruin a lot
of dinner parties with your stories
someone talks about some small beautiful
thing that happens in normal everyday
life and then you come back with that
reminds me of the time that I fell in
the grave of Yasser Arafat there’s a lot
of violent stories and you think they’re
normal you think that your life is
normal it’s not normal
actually you’re paid to go and have a
not normal life they go to the ends of
the earth
that’s a National Geographic story I’m
going to the ends of the earth on North
Korea I stubbornly dawn you’re after
here there and I have developed the kind
of body of work that they care about
which is deeper not just on the surface
so something that you love and that you
would tell that story whether someone
was gonna publish it or not and that you
can find out what stories are you you
can tell that nobody else can tell
that’s a lot more important than being
able to compose and make find pretty
light and do all the things that
photographers do you have to have
something to say Photography comes later
and it’s always coming
