POV: Ride on the Back of a Giant River Turtle | National Geographic

[Music]
the species of turtle working the giant
Amazon River turtle is is found
throughout the Amazon basin it’s
critically endangered features are
protected by armed guard for the nesting
season during the nesting season and
afterwards until the females of Margate
with their young used to be ten thousand
of females nesting in this area now we
just have 600 teammates we try to
understand the interaction between the
adults with the juveniles especially
with the hatchling
so the pretty camps can show the
behavior of them the mums with the
juveniles the hedges so we know they
migrate together we have seen instances
of interactions or between females or
females following other females and
nipping at the back of the shower
face-to-face contact of female but then
recognizing other females
in Brazil it’s it’s not considered
endangered by the Brazilian government
because we still have huge population we
have areas where we have thousand
females nesting and it’s only because
the Brazilian government has had a large
program for the last 35 40 years where
we’re protecting nesting beaches
