it’s always about the people no matter
what you say about the city you know
what the politics of the city is you
know the economy all this other stuff
when you get down to it it’s always
about the people when I got the call
from nat geo to do a story about
neighborhoods the neighborhoods of
Detroit I thought it was you know really
interesting because I had never seen it
done before the challenge was to you
know get a feel for the place and
Detroit is a big city so just trying to
find out you know what’s true here in my
work is definitely a collaboration and
people people get that it’s you know
it’s a conversation and and in my
portraits the environment is just as
important as the subject we were driving
down the street it was hardly anybody on
this this one block and I just studies
small group of people outside of a house
and I decided to go over there and see
what was going on and realized that was
actually a family who were working on
their house I thought that was so so
interesting that Here I am looking for
desolation and blight and abandonment
and I find life
this is what I like most meeting people
who have real stories these two women
lives this was their first week
volunteering as part of a program for
the entry into law school the one on the
left she was actually she’s actually the
first person in her family to go to
college it’s a hardknock city Detroit is
a place built on the shoulder anyway you
find places like this is born to be
beauty and so I approached bullet-head I
didn’t really see style I saw somebody
who looked like he had a history you
know he has on his club vest and they
might say oh that’s cool that’s stylish
but that’s about his family that’s his
clique and so these are all the social
markers that I could that I try to
capture within the portraits the way
most outsiders view Detroit that’s not
the energy that i picked up there I
think as viewers we bring our own
baggage to a story you know I just hope
that you know you connected to put the
people in these pages as human beings
that’s all I can really ask for this is
a human story you know that needed to be
told
