I D F stands for Israel Defense Forces
according to Israelis it is the military
that defends them from any harm
according to Palestinians it is the
force that occupies their land and
therefore threatens their existence
[Music]
Israeli citizens are required to serve
in the military most soldiers are
drafted at the age of 18 comparing your
daily life on the base to somebody who’s
not a soldier what’s the difference they
have much more free time than me they go
to parties and meet people and study and
I can do it only on my weekends
somebody’s not able to do some time or
and sometimes you might not want to do
it we need to do it because that’s your
job right now people who are here they
want to be here and they feel that
they’re doing something important we
have historic rights to be here and this
is my home just exactly as this is their
home and stay nians home and everyone we
have to be here we have to be soldiers
because unfortunately there are people
that don’t want us here
militants in Gaza can launch rocket
attacks into Israel this 25 mile strip
of land is isolated by a tightly
controlled border
[Music]
we’re now 400 metres from the Gaza
border
the only people talking are like a beer
on the army and now you wanna say so now
grandfather here
military military functions born raised
on my own you can make all the rockets
you are very close to the actual border
yeah so what you they should base your
rocket from Orem making sugar from some
rooftops mama to every Israeli lives in
here on the border I think about them
our mission is to let those people
request you work as a soldier the
Rockets coming in with being there an
operation until angry they feel heat
sorry you feel the complexity is complex
because the other side
experience but you can take all the
about them it was a lot them one-on-one
and further with us taking sugars like
we cannot shoot them because they know
how we do we don’t know for sure how
they were it has weapon are doing
because wants a whole life
it’s almost karaoke loafers any of your
soldiers with I have lots of your
friends ever a very close friend of mine
also is it do you feel afraid no need to
be friend no it won’t help us and the
opposite side of Israel is the
Palestinian territory called the West
play soldiers and protesters clash often
here we’re standing right outside of the
Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh right
down below we have route 465 which is a
major route on the other side of that
road we have the Israeli community of
Hallam eesh and there’s also spring down
there the Palestinian protesters and
riders and their supporters say that
reaching the spring is what they want
unfortunately reaching the spring
requires crossing this main road so it’s
a very main road that we cannot allow
for it to be closed
this is for you how close are we going
to get to the protestors let’s see it’s
a pretty young crowd look I mean yeah
you know it is teenagers they’re putting
themselves at risk I mean they’re taking
part violence these are the tear gas
canisters these are the methods and the
idea of refusing to disperse the
protesters we are sending between Abu
Saleh and calumny shabu
okay we literally almost got hit we got
the stone please remain upon the way we
are seeing other soldiers shooting
another one is being shot it’s
incredibly loud and the kids take the
cancers and they throw it back so the
soldiers when you can see here some
soldiers trying to cover their noses we
are moving back because we are right and
the range together we I got behind just
building up here okay listen let’s go we
are let’s move faster faster oh we got
one of these doesn’t hit you in the head
you’d be lucky if it doesn’t kill you
[Music]
what’s going on here
it’s very dangerous this is a situation
that can spiral out of control today
we’re dealing with nevi silas on a
weekly basis what if we don’t deal with
this the next week it’s in there too
nervous I love 10 episode 15 episode you
are afraid that such a thing would
transfer to other villages over that’s
the main concern that’s why you have to
stop it while it’s small nip it in the
bud it’s weird being thrown stones at
for me and I know you might not like
that by growing up I was 10 years old
the throwing stones at Israeli soldiers
Israeli cars I remember when I threw
stones I never thought of it as hurting
somebody as much as I thought of it as
something to show anger at the show
frustration when I threw stones when I
was younger I didn’t think of stones as
something to hurt what would make it
possible for everyone here to be able to
put the guns aside what’s neither do you
think what would happen change that
would make that possible I definitely
hope we can’t get there but at the same
time I don’t let’s put it this way right
now I’m wearing this uniform right now
I’m something that I’m doing and at this
point I I try to keep my my own personal
beliefs aside I just know that right now
this is necessary and so I do it
thinking from here what do you think you
want people to appreciate about your
work and
people around the world it needs to know
that the Israeli soldiers are exactly
like everyone else
and I really hope that we could all sit
right now without those uniforms in the
sea of Tel Aviv without the needs of the
weapons and of them but fortunately we
can so that’s why we’re here
[Music]
[Applause]
