we headed to three sister Springs area
now this is one of the only areas in the
world where you can actually come and
have a social interaction with manatee
and this whole area here will fill up
with manatees looks sort of like a
Tarzan movie coming in here the unique
thing about three sister Springs is the
fact that it’s sort of a lagoon type
area you have three springs up there
that are producing thousands and
thousands of gallons of water so it’s
constantly flushing itself it’s a lot
clearer than most areas in the Bay in my
opinion it’s one of the most beautiful
areas in the state of Florida
we have a lot of protection programs in
place which is conducive to the manatee
coming here and surviving so since the
natural springs are warm this is a good
environment for the manatee in the
wintertime we have more manatee here
than we do in the summer because they
come here to thermoregulate
the spring water is always a constant 70
to 72 degrees that water flows as it
comes out of three sister Springs and it
flows around into another area where
there’s another spring and it creates
sort of like a little sauna type area
for the manatee and we’ll have a hundred
and fifty or so manatee in that area at
any given time in the dead of winter
we promote passive observation which
means you’re not allowed to aggressively
approach a manatee you’re allowed to be
in the water with the vanity
if the manatee decides he wants to swim
with you or come over and he’s curious
and wants to check you out that he’s
allowed to do that you’re not allowed to
enter the sanctuary areas which have
been denoted by the boundary lines with
the buoys on them those are their
protection areas where they can get away
from humans and they can rest without
being disturbed
so those manatee will be behind the
protected sanctuary buoys and if they
want to socialize with you they will
come out from under the rope
spend a little time out there with you
and when they don’t want to be bothered
they’ll go back under the rope
