Modern Photos Get Amazing Civil War-Era Treatment | National Geographic

none of the photographs that Mathew
Brady his contemporaries actually ever
showed up at the battles during the
battle I decided I want to learn
wet-plate collodion process which is
tintype basically and I thought what if
I photograph contemporary reenactments
with this technology that existed years
ago and so I started to turn the camera
on the participants I wanted to give you
an idea about this kind of strange
phenomenon of these people 150 years
later who want to recreate civil war
wet-plate is a very fugitive method and
we have a portable darkroom that my
assistant is in and he’s processing this
essentially there’s a lot of individual
components this is the developer and
this is the silver bath which sensitizes
the plates and makes it possible to make
an image so this process needs to be
done wet the plate cannot dry between me
taking it out of the silver giving it to
Richard and making an exposure so we are
limited to about at this relative
humidity about 10 minutes before it
needs to come back and developed and
rinsed I just decided I wanted the
accidents to kind of take precedent and
not to worry so much about having a pure
there was no way that we could control
this process a lot of this is just left
to chance
which is kind of exciting not very under
you
