Mating Machines | Nat Geo Live

so watching this I don’t know too much
about birds-of-paradise before actually
seeing his presentation and you see a
lot of courtship preparing for courtship
training for courtship do they do
anything else not really I like to think
of mail but if you got the message yeah
you did
mail birds of paradise are basically you
know mating machines they’ve evolved by
female choice to do little else males
play no role in parental care there’s an
abundance of fruit so they can get out
and forage quickly and then get back to
that display site in the hopes that a
female will show up they spend eight to
nine months out of the year on or next
to those courtship display sites waiting
for females to show up and if you’re not
one of the chosen males you’re waiting
that whole time and nobody’s there and
you’re doing practice displays if you’re
one of the lucky few that all the
females are converging on then you’re
busy throughout those eight months the
other months they’re only reason why
you’re not displaying is because all
birds have to change out their feathers
every year and they have tumult and lose
all those incredible feathers and that
takes an enormous amount of energy
because their feathers are pretty
extreme so they spend a lot of time
eating not to mention they just look
absolutely ridiculous without their
feathers and even if females were
interested in them they probably
wouldn’t choose to mate with those males
at that time because you know it looks
like somebody dancing without their
wardrobe on it’s just ridiculous
