a marina gorebyss I’m executive director
of the Institute for the future a
nonprofit research organization in palo
alto california the institute has been
around for 46 years and our mission is
to help people systematically think
about the future in order to make better
decisions today I always say that we are
all immigrants to the future and none of
us are natives in that land we need to
learn new ways of understanding things
we need to learn new ways of relating to
each other we need to rethink how we do
things we don’t believe that we are
passive bystanders to the future we
don’t believe that the future just
happens to us it’s really about
exploring their uncharted territory
thinking seriously about possibilities
and then really making decisions we’ve
been developing the kind of technologies
of becoming a part of our lives the
internet and all the adjacent technology
is probably for the last 40 years if not
more but we’re just beginning to feel
the impact the social and economic
impact of these technologies I believe
that we’re living in the world of what
they’re called amplified individuals
people empowered with technologies and
connections with each other if they have
a powerful idea can create very powerful
movements that change our society and
change our culture you know recently
there’s been some research on the state
of awe and what these researchers found
is that when people experience all their
perception of time changes times or it
becomes expansive so it enables them to
feel that they’re capable of the kind of
things that they would never think of
before I’m really looking for
inspiration and magic in these projects
I would like to see things that are not
just a project but it can inspire many
many people I would love to see ideas
that inspire movements that really are
game changers the best strategy is
always to just share your ideas with the
world you never know what people
to them how they will remix and how they
will improve on your idea the more we
discover the more we realize that
there’s so much room left for
exploration I think exploration is a
continuous process it really is what
makes us human at National Geographic we
know there are no limits to wear or what
you can explore that’s why we’re giving
away a fifty-thousand-dollar prize to
fund your dream expedition visit
expedition granted calm to learn more
given $50,000 what would you explore
