we at National Geographic magazine love
photography but we especially love
photography that tells meaningful
stories in unforgettable ways we would
like to share with you our top 10
photographs from 2012
let us go behind the scenes and see what
makes those ten pictures special and why
this picture is magic the expression the
identical dresses it makes me wonder who
they are what they’ll become this is one
of the most beautiful portraits we made
this year this one it looks like
something out of The Wizard of Oz three
years of chasing tornadoes and you come
back with something that is as beautiful
and as iconic as this this is a
photograph of the tuba people what Lynne
has done is taken it one step further
she elected to use color negative film
why because it’s softer quieter quiet
like the languages were losing Stanley
good voice elk he’s a medicine man I
can’t believe Aaron gained the trust any
access to make it it’s because he cares
so deeply about these people
this photograph certainly has
compositional elements but all of that
is actually far less significant than
what this picture says and means it’s a
picture about poverty
– children playing amongst the rubble it
tells you so much about the spirit of
children and how that out of all the
conflict all the problems in Yemen there
is indeed hope and you see it with a
colorful kind I love this photograph of
a little Roma girl doing the twirl for
her grandfather and what makes this
photograph is not only the moment but
the red dress look at how your eye moves
through the frame this picture is a
moment in time and tells you so much
about Cuba just outside of Havana what
life’s like but it has done so artfully
look at the chaos penny was moving left
right all over up and down
it’s an extraordinary photograph and one
of the most surprising that I’ve seen
this year this is a picture about a
photographer’s obsession and using
state-of-the-art technology but don’t
just make it a giant sequoia picture do
it in the worst weather imaginable let’s
do it in a blizzard of course bad
weather makes great pictures
