we’ve been digging up dinosaur bones for
the past 200 years they’ve been found on
every continent and come in all shapes
and sizes
some up to three school buses long and
others human sized and even smaller
dinosaurs were truly a diverse group of
animals according to some estimates at
least a thousand different species have
been identified nearly 70% of which have
yet to be discovered so when it comes to
unearthing these prehistoric beasts
we’ve just barely scratched the surface
recently a team of scientists is trying
to find out what was in fact the biggest
dinosaur that ever roamed the earth to
date a group of sauropods called
titanosaurs where the heavyweight title
they were enormous herbivores towering
at heights up to four stories high and
lengths that spanned over 100 feet and
some with a neck alone that could
stretch longer than an adult
t-rex meet the Argentinosaurus largest
titanosaur
ever found in as the name would suggest
Argentina
weighing in at 90 tons and 18 times the
size of an elephant it holds the record
as the heaviest and longest land animal
ever discovered
and its remains are a clue to what other
massive dinosaurs might still be out
there
five owns on almost every animal hold
the most mass so the biggest bone on the
biggest dinosaur can provide the most
accurate information on how heavy that
dinosaur could get by taking
measurements of bone thickness
scientists have been able to simulate a
model of a 120-ton dinosaur a 240 ton
dinosaur and a colossal 480 ton giant
under computer-generated pressure the
color of the bones change with yellows
to Red’s being the breaking point in the
last two models these chubby dinos
proved just too heavy for the bone to
handle but under the weight of a 120 ton
dinosaur the Argentinosaurus thigh bone
held up this suggests that there could
be a new plus-sized line of dinosaurs 30
tons heavier than the Argentinosaurus so
really out there in the rocks is
something that is possibly even bigger
than this that was staggering around
sometime in the Cretaceous let’s go find
it
